Washington State Ferry From Edmonds to Kingston, Washington

Summer ferry reservations tend to sell out just as quickly as Seattle Savings account interest rates near me tickets these days. And this year will likely be no different when the initial round of reservations for our summer sailing scheduleare released at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23.

But there’s no need to fret if you come up empty the first time around. There’s still hope for your wedding plans in the San Juan Islands, and you’ll still login fpl pay bill be able to get to that appointment on Whidbey Island. Most people can always at least get on a ferry on their desired day of travel. Please note, day does not mean time. There’s a difference. Ensuring you get to where you’re going may take some flexibility.
Summer is a very busy time at our ferry
 terminals, but making reservations early
will help ensure you get on the
sailing you want.

How does the reservation system work?

Before launching into tips on how to secure a reservation, it’s important to explain how the system works. First, reservations are only needed on certain routes: Port Townsend/Coupeville and Anacortes/San Juan Islands (this includes trips to Sidney B.C. on Vancouver Island).

Thirty percent of the total standard vehicle space is released two months prior to the start of any upcoming season. The 2019 summer schedule goes from June 23 through Sept. 28. After the initial release, another 30 percent of vehicle space opens up for reservations two weeks before each sailing date. So if you’re looking to travel on July 18, that means more reservations are available on July 4. Looking for sailings on Aug. 26? Be ready to look for reservations on Aug. 12. The final 30 percent of space is released two days prior to each sailing.

So you may be thinking that this only adds up to 90 percent. And you would be ferry from edmonds to kingston wa, person who is good at math. Ten percent of space is left open for emergency and stand-by vehicles.

The system is structured with separate release dates to accommodate tourists, residents, and many others with widely varying travel plans. People visiting the area tend to have their travel plans mapped out well in advance and need to lock in their accommodations sooner rather than later, hence the two month release. However, residents judy holliday images don’t plan their trips to the store two months in advance. Therefore, there’s the two-week and two-day release dates. If all the reservations were available on Day One, they’d get snatched up by tourists. By giving visitors multiple opportunities starting two months prior to the new season, they’re given the time they need to plan.
Sunny, warm weather means big crowds on our ferries, which makes making a reservation all the more important.

Side note: If you’re traveling with a vehicle that is 7-foot-2 or taller and/or 30 feet or longer, disregard the explanation about the tiered release system. One hundred percent of reservations for tall or large vehicles are available on the first release day.

Tips to get a reservation

“Enough with the history lesson. I came to learn how to get a darn reservation,” I ferry from edmonds to kingston wa you say. Patience, my reservation padwan. Understanding how the system works helps understanding how to snag that reservation. So on to the main event. Here are five tips to help you get the reservation you desire.
The first round of summer sailing reservations go live on the morning of April 23.

  1. Be Flexible: Trying to get that 2 p.m. sailing from Anacortes to Friday Harbor on a summer Friday? Yeah. You and everybody else. Reservations during peak travel times go fast. Try leaving a little earlier or later in the day. Leaving the day before or day after may also work if your schedule allows. Don’t lock yourself into sailing at a specific time, unless you need to. Give yourself options.
  2. Teamwork makes the dream work: It’s simple math. Your chances of getting that coveted reservation go up if you have friends and family working with you. But be sure to only book the number of reservations you need. There’s only so many to go around, and you don’t want to be THAT person that squats on a reservation that someone else needs. There’s also a no-show fee if you book a reservation and don’t take that sailing without canceling. So if empathy isn’t your thing, there’s that to consider too.
  3. Phone a friend: We may not have met, but we consider ourselves your ferry friends. Give us a call the morning of a scheduled release. We might have some additional information about that sailing you’re interested in.
  4. Check for reservations the afternoon before your sailing: Without fail, there are a slew of reservations that always become available at about 4 to 5 p.m. the day before a given sailing. That’s because 5 p.m. is the latest a passenger can cancel a reservation without incurring that previously mentioned no-show fee. People’s plans frequently change, so they’ll cancel those reservations at the last minute, freeing them up for other folks.
  5. Standby isn’t a bad thing: If all else fails, there’s always standby. As mentioned above, 10 percent of every sailing is reserved specifically for standby customers. On top of that, there’s always other reservation holders who don’t show up without cancelling. So you’re not putting your plans in the hands of some higher power by attempting standby, even on holiday weekends. Just show up early and give yourself plenty of travel time. You’re almost assured to get on a sailing that day.
So that’s it. With these tools and tips, you’re officially a reservation making expert. If you have any other questions about making a reservation or about the ferry system in general, there’s plenty of additional information on our website. You can also give us a call at 206-464-6400 or toll free at 888-808-7977. That’s also the same number you’ll want to call to make a reservation. Best of luck to you come April 23!

Ferry Tips & Tricks

Getting to Port Townsend

There is not a direct ferry from Seattle to Port Townsend. The only direct ferry to Port Townsend is from Whidbey Island (Coupeville).

Most likely you’ll be taking the Edmonds/Kingston or Seattle/Bainbridge route so after your leisurely boat ride, enjoy a beautiful, ~1 hour drive up the Olympic Peninsula to Port Townsend.

Arrive Early

No matter the time of day, day of the week, or which route you’re taking, get to the ferry early. There is nothing worse than missing the ferry by just a couple of cars. If you want to see if a how busy a sailing is, you can check the ferry cameras.

The busiest times to ride the WSF are Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July, Labor Day Weekend, Thanksgiving, and around the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in early September.

Best Times to Travel

WSF has a feature on their website that provides the best times to travel. Each route has its own typical vehicle traffic conditions to give you a better idea of which ferry times are most trafficked.

Seattle/Bainbridge

Kingston/Edmonds

Port Townsend/Coupeville

Reservations

The Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry accepts and encourages passengers to make reservations. Even with a reservation you will need to arrive to the terminal 30-45 minutes before the scheduled sailing.

You cannot make reservations for the Seattle/Bainbridge or Edmonds/Kingston routes.

Getting on a Washington ferry for the first time since the pandemic? Here’s what to expect

Traffic is starting to return on ferries as more people start to venture out of their homes.

According to Washington State Ferries, vehicle ridership is returning to prepandemic levels and has fully recovered on some routes, particularly on weekends.

“The summer really is the Super Bowl for the ferry system,” spokesperson Ian Sterling said.

But walk-on ridership — primarily made up of commuters — remain down by nearly 70%, he said.

For those who haven’t taken a ferry since before the pandemic, there are a few things to know before taking a trip this summer.

Lines could be long. The Washington State Ferries is operating fewer boats than normal and hiring has not kept up with the wave of retirements during the pandemic, Sterling said. The Edmonds Kingston route, which is popular among tourists, had a two hour wait last Sunday, he said.

Avoid rush hour. The busiest times are on Friday afternoons and on Sundays. The best time to travel is early in the mornings and later at night. The Washington State Ferry website has a tool to help check traffic.

Keep your face covered. Since ferries are governed by federal law, masks are required any place outside a personal vehicle. That includes decks, bathrooms and indoor seating areas. Those in vehicles are also encourage to stay in their cars.

Galleys remain closed. While snack and drink vendors are still closed, vending machines are available. Think airplane rules: Remove face coverings only when eating or drinking. Sterling said discussions are ongoing to reopen galleys by the end of June.

You may be greeted at a distance. Washington State Ferries are using a new selfie stick credit-card-reader device at toll booths. They encourage travelers to buy tickets online.

Schedules of the ferry routes are available online.

Edmonds-Kingston Ferry?

We have a 40 foot coach and tow a car and would like to use this ferry to travel from Port Angels to pick up North I-5. We have only had one other ferry experience with the motorhome and that was from Skagway to Hanies Alaska. We had to disconnect the car and drive down the ramp and then back the coach into the small bow door turning 90 degrees as we proceeded. That was not a fun experience and one we do not wish to repeat. The photos below will give you a little taste of that experience.

Has anyone used the Edmonds-Kingston Ferry with a 40 foot coach towing? Is it a drive on drive off ferry or must you disconnect the toad and back the coach onto the ferry?

A few years back we took the ferry from Anacortes to Victoria island. It was straight on-straight off, and took 18 wheel trucks. Your intended route is probably also part of the BC ferry system (?).

When we use the Anderson Island Ferry, and some of the ferries in the San Juans, the ferry's themselves weren't the problem. The problem comes from the loading ramps, especially if you are looking at a minus tide! You will high center for sure. Check the tide schedule, and go for boarding/departing during the highest tide you can find if in doubt.

We did the E-K ferry with the old rig (1994 34 ft. Airstream) pulling a tandem trailer with a Honda Goldwing and a Kawasaki Concours and had no problems. They run semis on and off all the time.
Happy Glamping.

You might want to check the expense prior and also check on making a reservation which is advised since you Are in a big rig.

We used vancouver to ferry from edmonds to kingston wa bay ferry (Vancouver Island) in our 40' w tag. No issues, we did drop the toad and pay seperate fare. The thing about BC ferries is that in the summer, they have a 'sale' on RVs. Every foot over 20' is charged at 1/2 normal rate. Saved us some bucks! Of course, you have to pick a route and time that is covered under the sale fare, but still convenient times. We've also taken our 21'TT and Grand Cherokee on a couple of Wa state ferries. Our length just made the 40' cutoff! (over 40' extra charges).

Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands are beautiful!

Thanks for the info so far but I must not have made myself clear. We are not taking the coach on any ferry going to British Columbia. The ferry we would use is the Edmonds-Kingston Ferry that crosses over from the Port Angels, WA area to the north Seattle area. Lynnwood to be precise. Here is a Google map showing the ferry location.

https://tinyurl.com/yd6mekfd

I have been to the ferry website and understand the cost and the need for a reservation and would make one well in advance. I was hoping to find someone who could tell me if the ferry was a drive on/drive off type as I have no desire to back into the bow of a ferry ever again. If that particular ferry transports 18 wheelers then it must be a drive on/drive off. Sounds like we should call the ferry company and find out if the tide level is a problem. We have never been any farther west with comenity net ultamaterewardsmastercard coach than Montana so have no experience with the area including Oregon and California. That is the goal of this trip and we hope to visit California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. We already have reservations for Salt Lake City, Reno, Yosemite, Sequoia, San Francisco, Avenue of the Giants, Oregon coast, Crater Lake and up to Portland. Working our way north with the planning. Will take a ferry to Victoria but only a day trip without the coach.

Simple answer is YES, the only Washington Ferry run that could require backing is in the San Juan’s. All others are drive on drive off both in a forward direction.

You won't have any problem. All the ones I've been on, they put the trucks, semi's, down the middle lanes. I've made maybe a hundred trips over to Vashon, I worked there for about a year and a half and our trucks, King County Solid Waste, went there every day, 18 wheelers. I've been on the Bainbridge run, as well as Anacortes to Victoria. Have you considered the Port Townsend to Coupeville run?? I've been on that one also. Gets you further North of Seattle and all the traffic. All the boats are basically built the same, just different sizes I would call though in case something is weird for whatever reason. Backing up, never seen that unless someone in front of you is broke down. You will be ok.

They are all drive on-drive off unless you are going to or from one of the smaller Islands that are infrequent travel destinations. Also, an option Port Townsend (directly West of Port Angeles) to Whidbey Island and drive North across Deception Pass to Anacortes and out to I-5. All of the major ferry ports can accommodate large vehicles. Sometimes you can save a little by disconnecting the toad if the combination with tow bar puts you into the next length rate.
We reside in Anacortes but are South for the remainder of the season.

I'll add the no problem on that run. I suggest you check the cost of disconnecting the toad and driving on separately versus staying hooked up. They charge in 10 foot increments over 30 feet, so it's worth doing the math.

We've done the Edmonds - Kingston ferry many times, although not in the coach. But I can assure you all the traffic on said ferry is straight on and straight off, with several MHs or 18-wheelers a regular complement.

We did take our coach (towing) on the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry, and then on the Coupeville-Port Townsend. The latter is one where-- as someone mentioned-- you must stay aware of the state of the tide at boarding/disembarking time, as the ramps can get quite steep. We were blissfully ignorant at the time, but got lucky.

The Edmonds/Kingston ferry route has reopened following an incident that sent a log truck and its load sliding off its loading ramp, blocking ferry traffic.

The incident happened between Edmonds and Kingston, Washington on Monday, December 28th at around 10:55 a.m.

According to King 5 News, the log truck was attempting to exit the ferry when the back end hit a girder on the ferry, causing the rig to partially lose its load of 80-feet-long logs.

“He was trying to corner and center himself,” said  Michael Galligan, who was a passenger on the ferry at the time of the incident. “The first half of the truck made it up. The back half hit the side right where the ramp meets the boat and tipped over.”

Luckily, no one was hurt in the accident, but more than 150 motorists and their passengers were stranded on the blocked ferry for nearly four hours as the logging company brought in equipment to remove the dislodged timber from credit card generator with money on it ferry.

“We’re really lucky no one was apple cash card injured or even killed,” said Washington State Ferries spokesperson Ian Sterling. “Obviously, those were really big, heavy pieces of timber.”

During the cleanup, those looking to ride the ferry had the option to wait, try the Seattle-Bainbridge route, or drive around from the south end, which takes about two hours.

“Nobody can really remember this ever happening before,” said Galligan. “Everybody’s really bummed out about having to wait so long.”

The incident has since been cleared and the ferry is back in service, but officials are still investigating the incident and have yet to determine whether or not the truck driver will be cited for the accident and subsequent delay.
