Martin Lewis is urging anyone with an Amazon account to make a simple change to get £20 for free
Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has urged shoppers to make a simple change in return for £20.
It comes after Amazon decided to ban payments with Visa Credit cards.
Last week the online shopping giant is ditching UK-issued Visa credit cards as of January 19, 2022.
It means customers will instead need to use debit cards when making a purchase, or MasterCard and Amex credit cards.

Visa credit cards issued outside of the UK will continue to be accepted as well.
Amazon said the change is due to the high fees charged by Visa to process transactions.
But if your Visa credit card is your default method of payment on Amazon, you can get the online giant to pay you.
Amazon has been sending email notifications to customers, outlining the changes.
It is within this message that Amazon has been sending a link to shoppers, telling them they will give them up to £20 off their next purchase if they switch their default payment.
You'll need to switch your payment to a Visa debit, Amex, Mastercard credit or debit card to qualify for the deal.
If you decide to use another credit card for your online purchases, you should always make sure you can afford to pay back what you’re borrowing.
Amazon Prime customers are being offered up to £20 when choosing another card, while non-Prime members can claim £10.
You can also qualify for the cashback if you have just a Visa credit card in your Amazon wallet, so no other method of payment, and you add a new card.
Speaking on the Martin Lewis Money Show Live, Mr Lewis said the deal can also be accessed through the Amazon homepage or by pop-ups when you're on its website.
He said: "If Visa credit is your default method of payment at the moment, there's a way to get Amazon to pay you.
"[Amazon] will give you £10, or £20 if you're a Prime member.
"If you click the email link you've had about this or the homepage banner and you switch to a Visa debit, Amex, Mastercard credit or debit card you'll get that money."
You’ll need to click either the link in your email or through the Amazon homepage for the deal to work.
You won’t qualify if you simply just update your payment details.
According to Amazon shoppers on Twitter, the money back offer only works if you switch your default payment to a card that isn’t already in your Amazon wallet.
Amazon hasn’t said how long the deal is running for, but in its terms and conditions it states the "promotional offer is valid for a limited time only or while supplies last".
This means it could technically be pulled at any time.
An Amazon spokesperson said: "The cost of accepting card payments continues to be an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers.
“These costs should be going down over time with technological advancements, but instead they continue to stay high or even rise."

As a loyal customer for seven years and a Prime junkie, what took me so long to get the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card? Up until a few weeks ago I never really considered it. I saw the enticing checkout offers — Save $70 with the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card! — and breezed by them. I’m wary when a financial product, no matter how shiny, is hawked in my direction.
Then I applied. It was an uncharacteristic impulse spend: I didn’t calculate my monthly Amazon expenses or the savings I’d accrue. I didn’t even do much research beyond seeing the 5% cash back and thinking: That must be a better deal than what my current credit card offers, right?
Only afterward did I crunch the numbers. If you’re pressed for time, the TL;DR version is simple:
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is saving me money, and it can save you money too. If you’re a Prime member, it’s a no-brainer. If you’re not a Prime member but spend at least $2,400 a year on Amazon.com, you’ll cover the $119 Prime price tag and get the perks of a Prime membership — free two-day shipping, Prime Video and Unlimited music streaming — to boot.
Alexa, play “Ride of the Valkyries.”
You can apply for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card by doing the following.
- Go to the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card page.
- If you’re a Prime Member, simply click Apply now; if you’re not, first sign up for Prime.
- Once you’re able to apply, complete your relevant financial information.
- You may be approved in minutes, or Amazon may need further time to process your application.
- If approved, double-check that the default card on your Amazon.com profile becomes your Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.
What had me at hello was the uncapped 5% cash back on Amazon orders. We’ll lead with that, but there are plenty of other perks to consider.
- Earn rewards. You can earn an uncapped 5% back on all Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases for Prime members. Also earn 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores and 1% on all other purchases.
- Welcome offer. Receive a $70 Amazon gift card on approval.
- No foreign transaction fees. You won’t pay an additional fee on purchases made abroad with this card.
- No traditional annual fee. Amazon Prime members don’t pay an annual fee to use this card.
- Additional card benefits. These include travel and purchase protections, as well as 24/7 concierge service through Visa Signature and zero fraud liability.
- Metal construction. While most store-branded cards are plastic, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is metal.
- Prime membership required. The “no annual credit card fee” assumes you’re already an Amazon Prime member, which sports a $119 yearly price tag. If you order a lot from Amazon, the Prime membership pays for itself. If you don’t order a lot from Amazon, this card probably isn’t your best pick.
- No intro APR. If you’re looking for a 0% intro APR on purchases or balance transfers, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
- Not all Amazon-owned companies supported for rewards. Unfortunately, the 5% cash back applies only to Amazon.com purchases. While markets like Audible, Zappos, Prime Now, Prime Music and others are technically Amazon-owned, they don’t run on Amazon.com. I was especially disappointed to find that my Prime Now purchases weren’t eligible, something Amazon should strongly consider.
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card‘s eligible 5% cash back categories
5% cash back applies to:
- Annual and monthly Amazon Prime subscriptions and members of their Amazon Household — excluding Amazon Prime Video and invited guests of an Amazon Prime account.
- Amazon Prime Fresh.
- Amazon Family.
- Amazon Prime Student.
- Trial memberships of Amazon Prime.
5% cash back doesn’t apply to:
- Merchants outside Amazon.com using Amazon Pay.
- Purchases made at international Amazon retail sites — including Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr and Amazon.co.jp.
- Any other website operated by Amazon, at Amazon’s sole discretion.
Keep these in mind when you calculate your expenses to see if the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is worth it for you.
There are three big reasons why I keep the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card in my pocket year after year.
- I have a joint account with my partner, which means more spending and more saving.
- I have good credit and could afford to open up a new credit card.
- I exported my orders dating back to 2013 and saw a healthy positive trend:
All signs point to Amazon continuing to reward shoppers with broader pay my amazon prime credit card, new media — music, movies and TV — and fun technology like the Echo. I will likely keep benefiting from my Amazon card by spending more and saving more in the process.
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is an all-purpose credit card you can use anywhere Visa is accepted. The Amazon Prime Store Card is limited to use on Amazon.com, has a higher APR, and offers features like 5% cash back and up to 24 months of interest-free financing if paid in full.
Be on the lookout for the biggest discounts from this online giant as the holiday season nears in November, and again in July for Amazon Prime Day.
Besides these big shopping holidays, expect to find smaller bb com misc on everything from A to Z when you shop the Today’s Deal tab. And don’t miss these other deals and coupons for extra savings before checking out.
You won’t find a better card on the market aimed at Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. If you aren’t a Prime member and you spend at least $2,400 a year at Amazon.com or Whole Foods, you’ll easily recoup the $119 Prime membership price tag. And you get a nifty $70 welcome gift card to Amazon.com, plus all the perks that come with Prime membership. But if you don’t shop at Whole Foods and you only shop at Amazon occasionally, there are better cashback credit card options available.
Do you have an Amazon Prime subscription? If so, there is an easy way to save 5% on many of your purchases.
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card offers Prime members 5% back on purchases made at Amazon and Whole Foods.
And with special offers for cardmembers, some purchases can be discounted as much as 20%!
But is it worth adding the card to your wallet based on those benefits alone? It likely depends on how much of your monthly shopping you do with Amazon.
In this review, Team Clark will assess all the details of this card and compare it to some of the top cash back rewards cards on the market.
What Is the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card?
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card is a rewards credit card that offers cash back perks exclusively to Amazon Prime subscribers.
This card does not carry an annual fee as long as you’re an Amazon Prime member. It awards 5% back on purchases made at Amazon.com or Whole Foods and rewards of 1%-2% for purchases outside the Amazon ecosystem.
This card is on Team Clark’s list for the top cash back credit cards, top no-annual-fee credit cards and best cards for grocery shopping.
Card Specs and Perks
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card requires that you have an Amazon Prime membership in order to reap the benefits of this card.
To join Amazon Prime, which gives you access to free shipping and streaming TV among other benefits, you’ll need either a monthly or annual subscription:
- Monthly Amazon Prime subscription: $12.99 plus taxes
- Annual Amazon Prime subscription: $119 plus taxes
- Groups eligible for discounted subscription rates include: students, EBT recipients
If you don’t have a Prime membership, you have the option to apply for the Amazon Rewards Visa Card instead. It’s similar to this card but rewards only 3% back on Amazon purchases.
The top rewards opportunities for this card are Amazon-related, but they’re not limited to spending with the online retail giant.
Here’s a rundown of the rewards you can expect from this card:
- 5% cash back on purchases made through Amazon.com: An active Prime membership, which nets you free two-day shipping (or faster) on many items, is required to earn this level of cash back rewards.
- 5% cash back at Whole Foods: The well-known, high-end grocer is an Amazon property, so the online retail giant makes shopping at Whole Foods a big perk with this credit card.
- 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores: This matches the rewards you could get from everyday 2% cash back cards like the Clark-endorsed Citi Double Cash in three popular spending categories.
- 1% cash back on all other purchases.
You’ll receive your cash back in the form of rewards points.
You can use your accumulated points to pay for Amazon purchases directly, as credit card statement credits, or you can request a deposit of the cash back to a bank account you attach to your credit card account.
Top Cardholder Benefits
- Up to 20% off select Amazon products: Cardholders will gain access to discount opportunities on select Amazon products. These are limited time offers, may have some restrictions and must be purchased with the credit card to receive the big discount.
- Gift card freebie upon approval: This credit card does not have a traditional welcome bonus that offers a cash reward for a certain threshold of spending. Instead, it offers an instant gift card that is added to your Amazon account upon application approval. The amount on the gift card can vary. At the time of this article, the offer was for a $70 gift card. We’ve seen it as high as $100 in the past.
- Extended warranty on many purchases: If you use this card to make a purchase on an eligible warrantied product, it will extend the time period for the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional year. The manufacturer warranty has to be three years or less to qualify.
- Auto rental insurance: Amazon says, to get this coverage, you simply decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your Amazon card. The coverage is secondary to your personal auto insurance, but it can still save you money.
- Zero-liability fraud protection: If your credit card is lost or stolen, you’re not going to be held liable for any fraudulent charges made with your card.
- Annual Fee: None
- Balance Transfer Fee: 5% of the amount of the transfer with a $5 minimum
- Cash Advance Fee: 5% of the amount of each advance with a $10 minimum
- Foreign Transaction Fee: None
- Late Payment Fee: Up to $39
Amazon Prime Rewards Card vs. 2% Cash Back Credit Cards
Money expert Clark Howard’s standard credit card recommendation is to get a rewards card that pays unlimited 2% back on all purchases without an annual fee.
This Amazon card isn’t quite that, but could it actually be better for a segment of dedicated Amazon consumers?
Let’s do some analysis.
Since the merits of having this card are all about how often you spend money at Amazon or Whole Foods, the first thing you want to look at is how much money you spend at those two retailers each month.
Every dollar you spend at either retailer will earn you an additional 3% back on the purchases with the Amazon card versus a 2% card.
That adds up pretty quickly:
|Amazon + Whole Foods Spending Per Month||Amazon Card Cash Back(5%)||2% Card Cash Back|
Next, for the purposes of this spending analysis, you should throw out any monthly spending on dining, gas and drugstore purchases. That’s because the Amazon card and the unlimited 2% cash back cards are going to reward these purchases at the same rate of return: 2%.
Finally, you should add up all of the purchases that you’ll be making with the credit card each month that don’t fall into the reward categories we’ve already mentioned above: Amazon, Whole Foods, dining, gas or drugstores.
In all the rest of these spending categories, the 2% cash back card is going to give you twice as much return as the Amazon card (1%).
That, too, can add up quickly:
|Miscellaneous Spending Per Month||Amazon Card Cash Back(1%)||2% Card Cash Back|
At the end of the day, we think the best solution is to carry both types of cards in your wallet and use each when it is most advantageous.
However, if you’re picking just one, you’ll have to do some quick math on where you fall in that first table versus where you fall in the second table to figure out which card is going to give you the most cash back in a given month.
Here’s a quick look at some of the high-level details for the Amazon card vs. three of the top 2% cash back cards:
|Card Characteristic||Amazon Prime Rewards Visa||Citi Double Cash||PayPal Cashback Mastercard||Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature|
|Cash Back Rate||5% at Amazon and Whole Foods, 2% on gas, dining and drugstores, 1% on all other purchases||Unlimited 2% (1% when you buy, 1% when you pay your bill)||Unlimited 2%||Unlimited 2%|
|Welcome Bonus||Instant Amazon Gift Card ($70)||None||None||None|
|Intro APR Offer for New Purchases||None||None||None||None|
|Intro APR Offer for Balance Transfers||None||0% for 18 months||None||None|
|Foreign Transaction Fee||None||3% in U.S. dollars per transaction||None||1%|
|Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver||Yes||No||No||Yes|
|Cell Phone Protection||No||No||No||No|
The Big Takeaways
- 5% can add up quickly: There’s a reason this Amazon card is so appealing. If you shop frequently with the online retailer, there’s simply no beating that rate of cash back return on a card with no annual fee.
- 2% cards are the Little Engine That Could: With no spending or category restrictions, the possibilities for getting your 2% back are limitless. And that can really help your cash back returns add up by the end of a month.
- This card isn’t the place to look for welcome bonuses and promotional rates: When you’re dealing with a card that already offers some of the top rewards rates in the industry, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that it doesn’t come with any big introductory offers. And that’s OK. Clark Howard recommends evaluating cards on what they offer you in the long term — not on the deal they give you for the first few months of membership.
Are you considering adding the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card to your wallet? Let’s review some of the major pros and cons of the card before you make your final decision:
Pros and Cons
|5% back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases||Must pay for Prime subscription to receive cash back rewards|
|No annual or foreign transaction fees||High balance transfer fee|
|Auto rental insurance and extended warranty coverages included||No introductory APR periods on new purchases or balance transfers|
If you’re a frequent Amazon shopper and Prime subscriber, this rewards credit card is a great candidate to add to your wallet.
The 5% that you’ll get back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases is among the best returns that you’ll find from any credit card, and the 2% back on three other popular spending categories helps ensure your total rate of return is high.
And, with no annual fee and a rewards program that gives you cash, the card checks a lot of the boxes for what money expert Clark Howard looks for in a rewards credit card.
This card makes so many of our “best of” credit card lists for good reason.

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card Review
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is a cash-back credit card exclusively for Amazon Prime members.
Built for regular Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market shoppers, it offers up to 5% cash back on purchases made within the Amazon ecosystem and 2% cash back on a broad range of other purchases. Backed by Chase, Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature requires a paid-up Prime membership but otherwise has reasonable fees.
The easiest way to redeem your Amazon Prime Rewards cash back is for instant discounts on purchases from Amazon. Thanks to Chase’s expansive lineup of additional cash-back redemption options, you can also redeem for cash equivalents like statement credits, travel expense reimbursement, merchandise, and gift cards.
If you’re not sure Prime membership is right for you, look into the similar Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card, which provides 3% cash back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. If your Prime membership is canceled or expires due to nonpayment, your Prime Rewards Visa Signature account will automatically downgrade and you’ll earn 3% cash back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases.
These are the most notable features of the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.
Get a $100 Amazon gift card instantly upon approval. If you’re not an Amazon Prime member, you’ll still qualify for a $50 Amazon gift card at approval.
This is a limited time offer. See terms for offer details.
Earning Cash-Back Rewards
This card earns unlimited 5% cash back on all Amazon and Whole Foods Market purchases with eligible Prime membership. It earns 2% cash back on eligible purchases in three bonus categories: restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores.
All other eligible purchases earn an unlimited 1% cash back. Cash back accrues as points, with one point equal to $0.01 cash back.
To guarantee you maintain 5% cash-back eligibility, Amazon advises keeping your card in your secure Amazon Wallet in your Amazon account. If you remove the card from your wallet or add it to another account, you may temporarily lose 5% eligibility.
If this occurs, you’ll still earn 3% back on Amazon.com purchases, but you may need to contact Chase or Amazon to get the 5% restored.
Redeeming Cash-Back Rewards
The best way to redeem your accumulated points is for instant discounts on Amazon purchases, known as Amazon’s Shop With Points feature. You can also redeem for Amazon gift cards, a popular gift item. There’s no minimum to redeem in either case.
At Chase’s Ultimate Rewards portal, you also can redeem for general-purpose cash back (via statement credit), travel (airfare, hotels, car rentals, and more), and general merchandise.
Visa Signature Travel Benefits
This card has some useful travel benefits backed by Visa:
- Travel Accident Insurance. This bare-bones form of travel insurance covers catastrophic events up to $500,000 per cardholder.
- Lost Luggage Reimbursement. Costs associated with cardholders’ and family members’ lost luggage are covered up to $3,000.
- Baggage Delay Insurance. If your baggage is delayed more than six hours, any essential purchases made as a result are reimbursed up to $100 per day.
- 24/7 Travel and Emergency Assistance. Get referrals for medical, legal, and other emergency services if you run into trouble. Additional fees may apply.
- Complimentary Car Rental Insurance. Thanks to Visa’s auto rental collision damage waiver, costs associated with rental car collision and damage (subject to policy limits) are covered when you pay for the rental in full with your card.
- 24/7 Roadside Dispatch. Additional fees may apply.
- Perks Within the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection. These include the best rate, automatic room upgrades, and free in-room WiFi (all subject to availability).
- 24/7 Concierge Service. Get help making hard-to-get reservations and planning itineraries in unfamiliar cities.
Visa Signature Consumer Benefits
This card has some potentially valuable benefits for everyday shoppers too. You’ll get extended warranties of up to one year beyond the manufacturers’ warranty window.
You’ll also enjoy purchase protection (theft and damage coverage) on new purchases for up to 120 days, capped at $500 per claim and $50,000 per account.
This card has no annual fee, but it does require a paid Amazon Prime membership. Prime costs $12.99 per month or $119 per year, per individual or household account. This card has no foreign transaction fee.
This card requires a good to excellent credit score. If you have any notable blemishes in your credit history or a credit score below where you’d like it to be, your application may be denied.
These advantages argue strongly in favor of applying for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.
1. Up to 5% Cash Back on Amazon and Whole Foods Purchases
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card’s distinguishing benefit is 5% cash back on purchases at Amazon and Whole Foods. There’s no limit to cardholders’ 5% earnings and virtually no restrictions on what they can buy.
Needless to say, this is a fantastic rate. Most other cash-back cards, even those charging annual fees, cap cash back below 5% or impose strict spending caps on categories that earn 5% or higher cash back.
2. Broad 2% Cash Back Categories
This card’s 2% cash-back categories span drugstores, restaurants, and gas stations. Most consumers spend regularly in at least one of these categories. When they do, they’ll earn cash back at a very competitive rate.
3. Seamless Redemption Process
Thanks to Amazon’s Shop With Points feature, it’s incredibly easy to redeem your accrued Amazon Rewards points. Simply apply them against your Amazon transaction balances and get on with your life.
You can also redeem at Chase’s Ultimate Rewards dashboard, which is pretty easy to use too.
4. No Foreign Transaction Fee
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has no annual fee. That’s welcome news for cardholders who frequently venture outside the U.S., whether on road trips to Canada or international vacations to Europe and beyond.
5. No Direct Annual Fee
This card doesn’t charge an annual fee. If you’re already taking full advantage of your Amazon Prime membership, and you’d keep your Prime membership whether you had this card or not, there’s really no additional out-of-pocket cost here.
6. Solid Visa Signature Benefits
Though it’s not a proper travel rewards credit card, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has a nice lineup of Visa Signature benefits for shoppers and travelers. The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection perks are particularly nice, as are the various travel insurance inclusions.
7. No Penalty APR
This card has no penalty APR. If you occasionally miss statement due dates due to unforeseen expenses or cash crunches, this could save you hundreds of dollars in penalty interest each year.
Consider these drawbacks before applying for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.
1. Requires Paid-Up Amazon Prime Membership
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card requires a paid Amazon Prime membership to earn 5% cash back on Amazon pay my amazon prime credit card Whole Foods purchases.
Prime membership costs $12.99 per month or $119 per year, roughly equivalent to the cost of a premium cash-back credit card like Blue Cash Preferred from American Express.
Prime has attractive benefits, such as free two-day shipping, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re not a Prime member already, or you feel you’re not getting your money’s worth from the program, think twice about applying for this card.
2. No 0% APR Introductory Promotion
This card does not have a 0% APR introductory promotion for purchases and balance transfers.
If you’re looking for a new home for your high-interest credit card balances or need to finance a major purchase, look to no-annual-fee cash back cards like Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited, both of which offer 15-month 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers.
3. Automatic Downgrade If Prime Membership Lapses
If you cancel your Prime membership or allow it to lapse due to nonpayment, you’ll lose this card’s 5% cash-back benefit. You can avoid this in the short term by choosing an annual Prime membership, but it’s something for tentative Prime members to keep in mind.
4. Low Baseline Rewards Rate
This card’s baseline rewards rate is low – just 1% back on purchases not covered by the 5% and 2% categories.
That’s a far cry from some competing cash-back cards’ baseline rates. The Citi Double Cash Card earns unlimited 2% cash back on all eligible spending, for instance.
The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has one job: to reward loyal Amazon Prime members for their continued patronage.
Its three-tiered rewards program earns up to 5% cash back on Amazon and Whole Foods Market purchases, pay my amazon prime credit card cardholders who prefer to shop at home except when it’s time to restock the cupboard.
The promise of 2% back on purchases at restaurants, drugstores, and gas stations is nothing to sneeze at, either. For a card that technically doesn’t charge an annual fee, this is a pretty strong cash-back regime.
The bottom line? For heavy Amazon shoppers, this card may be well worth the Prime membership fee, even if you don’t use it outside the Amazon/Whole Foods ecosystem.
However, if you don’t spend enough at Amazon or Whole Foods to justify a Prime membership, you may want to give this card a pass – or at least stick to the truly no-annual-fee Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card. Attractive as this card is, it provides the best deals specifically to Amazon Prime members.
