Customers at Chicago's biggest bank have a new way to deposit checks: Just snap, snap and tap.
Chase, which holds 16 percent of deposits in the Chicago area, has introduced an iPhone application allowing consumers to deposit checks with the camera-enabled smart device, which means no more trips to a local bank branch or ATM or hassling with deposit slips.
Customers simply use their phone's camera to snap pictures of the front and back of the endorsed check and electronically send them to Chase. The bank responds with a text message that says the images have been successfully uploaded. The service is free, but depositors must be enrolled in Chase's online banking program to use the mobile app.
Meanwhile, Chicago's No. 2 deposit gatherer, Bank of America, said it's testing a mobile-banking app also allowing customers to make deposits remotely.
The deposit-making alternative is occurring as roughly a quarter of mobile-phone users have smart phones, according to market research firm Nielsen.
Still, consumers interested in making smart-phone deposits may have to look hard to find banks who offer the technology. A study last August by Celent, a research firm, found that 71 percent of financial institutions had no plans to offer deposit programs on mobile phones. Many cited risk or compliance fears, including concerns about check image quality and security. Also, self-service deposits are at odds with many institutions' cross-sell cultures, which depend on foot traffic in retail branches.
The practice of remotely depositing checks using an electronic device, typically a scanner, started taking hold around 2005, but primarily offered to businesses, said Bob Meara, a Celent senior analyst. In 2007, USAA became the first bank to offer remote deposit capture broadly to consumers via home-based scanners.
Last August, USAA, which mostly serves members of the military and their families, also launched its mobile phone deposit app.
"It has exceeded expectations," USAA spokesman Paul Berry said of the mobile deposit phone app for iPhone and Android. More than 1.5 million checks with $940.8 million in deposits have been submitted, he said. USAA has only one branch with tellers, in San Antonio.
"This technology works great for us because most members are in the military and located somewhere else," Berry said.
Few banks offer mobile phone deposit apps, Celent's Meara said.
But "a larger group of financial institutions is testing it," and Chase's new offering of iPhone deposits will likely "inspire other banks to jump in," he said.
Chase said it has "had thousands of consumers use the app without issue."
Ian Rosen, a New York financial professional who provides information services to the investment banking industry, was driving to a Bon Jovi and Kid Rock concert recently with some friends when one of them mentioned the new iPhone deposit app from Chase.
Later, Rosen, 36, used his iPhone to deposit a $20 check into his Chase account.
"The process was as clear as crystal," he said. "The hardest part is making sure the check is centered, and you're holding the camera steady, but it worked on the first try.
"It removes one of last reasons why I'd go to a Chase ATM."
After a few days, when he saw the deposit added to his Chase account, he shredded the check.
But at least one technology analyst and Chase customer has blogged about a glitch he experienced in Chase's fledgling service.
Bart Narter, a senior vice president for Celent in San Francisco, said the only reason he goes to a branch or ATM is to get cash or deposit checks.
So he "was very excited to learn about Chase's new mobile remote deposit capture."
He said in a July 7 blog that the app is intuitive and "very user-friendly": Type in the amount of the check. Take pictures of both the front and back of the endorsed check. Verify and then submit.
But it didn't work for him.
"I typed in the amount, but the character recognition couldn't find that amount on the check, so the system rejected the deposit," Narter said.
"This was a machine-generated check with everything typed," so character recognition should have been easy, he said.
"Chase needs to go back to the drawing board on the character recognition, and I need to go to the ATM to deposit the check," Narter said. "I anxiously await the next version."
Some smaller institutions are also offering remote deposit services for consumers.
Sharon Credit Union, in Sharon, Mass., offers "VIP Deposit," or virtual item processing, in which consumers can deposit checks from home using their personal computer, a scanning device and software provided by the bank. It's free for eligible consumers. Sharon is evaluating remote deposit for smart phones, a spokeswoman said.
Digital Federal Credit Union of Marlborough, Mass., enables customers to deposit checks through a home-based scanner system and through Apple iPhones or Android-powered smart phones with cameras. About $300 million has been deposited remotely in the credit union since it began its home scanner program in 2008, and in April it began offering remote deposit capabilities through the smart phones, spokesman John Lahair said.
Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union of Live Oak, Texas, also offers an "eDeposit" service through a home-scanning system and through iPhone and Android devices.

If Chase receives your deposit before 9 p.m. ET on a business day, it will process it that day. The funds will be available subject to schedules provided by your account. If Chase receives your deposit after 9 p.m. ET, you'll be able to see the deposit in your account immediately, but it'll be processed the next business day.
Can you deposit money into someone else's account?
You can deposit only into your accounts.
Is there a limit on the number of checks or value?
You can submit as many deposits as you need to each day, up to $1,000 an account, and there's a $3,000 monthly limit per account for deposits made with Quick Deposit, the name of Chase's iPhone deposit app.
What should a consumer do with the paper check after it has been deposited via iPhone?
Once you've scanned and submitted your deposit, you should mark the checks as having been deposited and store them in a secure location until you destroy them. No laws or regulations specify any length of time you need to keep the original checks. Chase recommends that you destroy the original checks immediately after the deposits have been posted to your account.
What types of checks can't and can be processed over the iPhone?

In Online Banking: view transaction history, then select the check number to view the image. You can view and print electronic images of the front and back of checks that have cleared your account within the past 18 months from the account activity details.
In our mobile app: view transaction history to see activity from the last 90 days. Look for an icon that indicates you can view check and deposit items associated with that transaction. You will be able to view cleared checks and deposit items originating from your account.
You also can order a copy of any check that has cleared your account within the past seven years. Log in to Online Banking and select Services from the Customer Service menu. Then choose Order Statements & Check Copies under the Account Services heading. There is a fee of $5 for each check copy, and copies are delivered by mail.
How Counter Checks Work
Checks don’t fit in well with today’s instant-access world: When you're running low, you must order them several weeks in advance so they can be printed with your information on them. But if you’re in a pinch after having run out of checks before your new ones arrive, you can often get several instant counter checks from your bank to meet your temporary need.
A teller or personal banker can print counter checks for you. They will have your account information on them, so they work just like regular checks. Your ABA routing number and account number appear on the bottom of each check in that familiar computerized MICR font. Some banks include your name and address as well, but for the most part, these checks are very basic, and merchants can usually tell when you’re using a counter check.
When you first open an account at a bank, you will probably be given several counter checks to get you started before your official checks arrive.

Instant access: The main benefit of a counter check is that you have what you need—a check—with a trip to the branch. Instead of waiting for a shipment of checks, you can start writing checks right away.
Cost and limits: Banks usually charge a small fee to print checks at the branch, so expect to pay roughly $1 to $2 dollars per check. Also, you can only get a few checks at a time; you’re not going to walk out with 50 checks.
Suspicious merchants: If you’re planning to make a payment with one of these checks, be aware that merchants don’t always want to accept counter checks as payment. Even if the bank prints your personal information on the check, counter checks usually don’t have a check number, which is a strong signal to merchants that the check is a counter check. Merchants might fear that you’ve opened a brand new account (which signals greater risk for them) or that you’re using a poorly made counterfeit check.
How to Get Counter Checks
Visit your bank or credit union’s branch to request a counter check. Before you make a trip to the branch, call and make sure counter checks are available there. Find out what the process is and whether you need to use any particular branch. Of course, if you use an online-only bank, you can’t get counter checks because there is no branch to visit.
Once at the branch, ask the teller or personal banker to print the checks, show your ID, and complete any other steps required by the bank. You should have your checks in-hand in just a few minutes.
How to Fill Out Counter Checks
Writing a check with a counter check is the same as using any other check:
- Write the date in the upper-right corner.
- Write the name of your payee on the line next to “Pay to the order of.”
- Write the amount of the check in numeric form in the box on the right.
- Write the amount using words on the line under the payee line.
- Include a “memo” or any reference information if you like.
- Sign the check near the bottom-right corner.
You might also need to write your personal information on the check, usually in the upper-left hand corner. Again, some banks print those details for you. If not, whoever you’re writing the check to will probably want to know how to contact you if any problems arise. For example, they may require you to provide your name and phone number at a minimum. Retailers often want your address and driver’s license number as well.
How to Use Fewer Checks
If you’re out of checks, and you find yourself in this situation often, try to use fewer checks.
Although counter checks are helpful, it takes time to go to the branch, and it’s less expensive to order checks from a printer.
To use fewer checks, take advantage of technology:
- Sign up for automatic payments via ACH for recurring monthly payments like utility bills and insurance premiums.
- Use your bank’s online bill payment system. Your bank will pay electronically or mail a check so you don’t have to.
- Spend with your debit card instead of writing checks at merchants. Better yet, use a credit card and pay it off every month.
- Repay your friends with online services and apps for sending money.
Cashier's Checks
Counter checks are not the same as cashier’s checks, which are also checks that your bank prints on demand. Cashier’s checks are for “cleared” or guaranteed funds, and they have payee information printed on them. Counter checks are not for guaranteed payments, and the payee information must be filled in.

How To Order Checks From Chase
As with most banks, the quickest way to obtain Chase checks is online. Chase offers a simple process no matter which method you choose.
Customers who want to order checks online should first log in to their accounts at Chase’s website. Once you have access to your account, click on “More…”. Under this menu, select “Order checks and deposit slips.”

How Much Does It Cost To Order Checks?
The cost for ordering checks depends on the type of account you have at Chase as well as the check features you choose and where you choose to buy them. Read on for a closer look at costs.
How Much Does It Cost To Order Checks From Chase?
A box of 100 checks starts at $20 for customers with a Chase Total Checking account. The cost might also depend on the type of checks ordered. According to Chase Customer Service, it takes 10 to 14 days to receive checks, though some types of checks can be delivered faster for an additional fee.
Customers also have ways of receiving free checks. The Chase Premier Plus Checking account provides free checks if you choose Chase design checks. If you opt for the Chase Sapphire Checking account, the company provides checks free of charge for both Chase design and personal design checks.
Customers should note that these free checks come with requirements. Those with a Premier Plus account must have an average beginning day balance of $15,000 across all linked Chase accounts or a linked qualifying Chase first mortgage with automatic payments. Customers who fall short of these requirements must pay a $25 per month fee. Sapphire account holders must have $75,000 deposited across all linked Chase accounts or face a similar $25 monthly charge.
Alternative Providers
Though Chase and other banks don’t encourage doing this, you can also buy checks from other sources.
Companies such as Costco, Vistaprint and Walmart offer check printing services. All offer a wide variety of designs at various costs. To ensure your order is safe and protected, check for security features such as the “Padlock icon” developed by the Check Payment Systems Association.
Here are a few additional details:
- Costco: If you’re interested in large orders, Costco offers 492 checks for as little as $18.96 ($15.17 for executive members) through Harland Clarke check printing.
- Vistaprint: Costs start at $4.00 for a set of 25 checks.
- Walmart: Costs start at $8.46 for a pack of 150.
Technically, you can also print your own checks, but these must meet a strict set of criteria such as using paper stock and dimensions that conform to industry standards. The checks must also include the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition line that bears all of the information of a Chase MICR line, including your routing number and account number. They must also represent your information accurately and bear the legend stating, “This is a legal copy of your check.”
Checks that don’t conform to these standards will bounce. For this reason, you should consider buying checks from Chase or a reputable check printing service.
What You Should Know
Since a separate company handles Chase check orders, the information you request on the checks won’t change your account information on the Chase website. In other words, if you print checks using a different address, the old address will remain in Chase’s system unless you contact Chase directly. To make address changes to the system, go to the “Change of Address” section in the “Customer Center” page.
