Easy Math Game: Tens Go Fish

When your kids are learning basic addition skills, you look for all kinds of ways to make learning math fun. We've found math card games to be a great way to practice addition and have fun at the same time. Tens Go Fish is a mathematical version of the classic card game–you guessed it–Go Fish!
How to play Tens Go Fish

Tens Go Fish is very easy to learn, especially if your kids are already familiar with Go Fish. It is also perfect as a beginning math card game for kids who aren't used to having to perform calculations while they play games! After you read the basic instructions below be sure to try out the variations I've suggested, too! If you would like written instructions, fill out the form at the end of the post.

What You Need

  • One deck of cards. Remove all the face cards and the number 10 cards. You will be left with four cards each of numbers 1-9.
  • Two or more enthusiastic players!

How to Play Tens Go Fish

Deal each player five cards. Place the stack of remaining cards face down in the middle of the table. This is the "Go Fish" pile.

Before beginning game play look for pairs of cards in your hand with a sum of 10. Place all pairs with a sum of 10 face up on the table in front of you. Draw from the Go Fish pile to replace the cards so you still have five cards in your hand. For example if you have a hand with 2-2-3-8-7, place 2-8 and 3-7 on the table and draw four more cards.

To begin, as in traditional Go Fish, players take turns asking each other for their desired card. However, instead of seeking out pairs of the same card, players want pairs to make the sum of 10. For example, if I hold a 5, 3, 2, 4, 9, I might ask for a 5 so I can "make 10."

If a player gets the card he asked for, he puts the pair down on the table  and picks a new card from the deck. If he does not get the card he asked for, the player must "Go Fish" and pick a new card from the deck. If the new card from the deck makes 10 with a card in the player's hand, he or she puts the pair of cards down, and gets another turn. If he still does not get the card he wanted, play passes to the next player.

If a player runs out of cards, he picks two new cards. A player's turn is over when he can no longer make 10.

The game is over when there are no more cards, or no more pairs can be made.

Playing Cards for Tens Go Fish

Variations

Once you and the kids have gotten the hang of how to play Tens Go Fish, you will enjoy changing things up a bit to keep the game interesting.

Add in four face cards, such as the four kings. Designate these four face cards as "wild cards," which when drawn can be any value the holder of the card decides to give it.

You can also add back in the number 10 cards. Players can place a single 10 card down instead of a pair.

For extra math practice, have players write down the equations of each pair combinations they make.

    Ratings and Reviews

    Ok game

This game is OK but could be so much better. I don’t see any way to turn off the loud music so that I can play anywhere I want to. Also why does the opponent get more matches from the draw pile than I do?

    Pretty good

I downloaded this game just to play go fish, and I would like to say it’s very good. If you see another review about something being fixed, it is. I would like to suggest a couple things though. I don’t really like it when the character says “do you have a ____” over and over. And I don’t think he says ace at all, but I’m not 100% sure though. It might’ve just been my games that he didn’t say ace. And this is in a 13 year olds perspective.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes there is an ace in the game. When we played it back in the day, the way to ask for a card was “Do you have ... ?” over and over.

    Random computer? I think not

There’s no way this computer is “random” I got to the Zeta opponent in career and he has beaten me 8 straight times and tied me 3 times, all before I was finally able to beat him. Also, there are cards I know the computer has that I ask for and somehow on the next turn he asks me for what I asked for without drawing. Or it “randomly” asks for the card that I had just drawn. This game should have different variation of go-fish, like if you pick up a card you already paired earlier, then you add it to the pair you already made (how I played growing up).

I have said this multuple times - there is absolutely no reason for me to purposely rig the game to make the game unfair to play and hence get negative reviews. The programming logic is EXACTLY the same for all characters. There’s nothing I can do about your unfortunate spell of bad luck. The app is basically picking a random number.

The rules used in this game are the traditional, basic rules we used back in my childhood in the 1980s.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    Go Fish Rules and Gameplay

Go Fish is a fun card game that uses a standard 52 card deck. It can be played with 2 people or more.

    Game Rules

    Starting the Game

The first thing you do is deal cards to the players. For 2 to 3 players you deal each player 7 cards. If there are more than three players, deal 5 cards each. The rest of the deck is then spread out in the middle of the players face down. This can be called the pool of cards.

    Taking a Turn

Each player gets a turn in clockwise order (to the player's left).

During a turn the player asks another player if they have a particular rank of card. For example, the player may ask Kathy if she has any nines. If Kathy has any nines, then she must give all of her nines to the player. If Kathy doesn't have any nines, then she says "go fish".

When you "go fish" you can take any card from the pool.

If the player gets the cards they asked for, either from the pool or from Kathy, then the player gets another turn.

If the player gets all four suits of the same rank, then they can put the cards face up in front of them. For example, if you already had a nine of hearts, clubs, and spades; then you picked up the nine of diamonds from the pool, you then get to place the set of nine cards down in front of you and you get another turn.

    Winning the Game

Go Fish is over when one player runs out of cards or there are no more cards in the pool. The winner is then determined by who has the most piles or suits of cards in front of them.

    Go Fish Strategy
    • Try to memorize what cards the other players have and want.
    • If you pick up a card rank from the pool that you didn't have, it can be good to guess that rank on your next turn.
    • Try to Go Fish more at the start of the game. This gets you more cards and a better chance of getting more books and matches later.
Alternative ways to play the game Go Fish

If you want to mix things up a bit, you can try these other ways to play the game:
    • Keep play the game until all the cards run out. When the pool is gone you no longer get to Go Fish, it just becomes the next player's turn.
    • Try playing where you try to get pairs of cards instead of fours.
    • Players ask for a specific card instead of just a rank. For example, you would ask for a nine of diamonds, rather than just all nines.
    • At the end of the game, deduct a point for each card a player is holding. This way players have to balance between wanting a lot of cards to get matches and getting rid of their cards before the end of the game.
    • Try playing with two decks and passing out more cards to each player.

    Go Fish Game Rules

    playing go fish

(Three people playing a traditional game of Go Fish)

    Card Game Rules

Go Fish, or Authors, is a card game that requires 2-5 players and a standard 52 playing card deck. Go Fish is typically described as an easy game that young kids enjoy but, people of all ages can have fun playing it. The objective of Go Fish is to have the most “books”,or 4 of a kind, by the end of the game.

If you are looking for cards to play Go Fish with, check out a standard deck here or one of our Go Fish specialty decks here.

For more classic card games, check out our guides for Six Card Golf and War.

A free online version may be found here.

    Set Up

Before the game officially begins, the job of dealer must be assigned to one of the players. To decide who is dealer, every player receives 1 card from a shuffled deck of cards. With Aces being high and 2’s being low, the player with the lowest card is the dealer.

The players assemble in a circle and the dealer shuffles the cards. The player to the dealer’s immediate right cuts the shuffled deck and the dealer then passes the cards out face down, clockwise, and one at a time. If less than 4 people are playing, each player receives 7 cards. If more that 4 people are playing, each player receives 5 cards. The remaining deck is placed face down in the middle of the circle to form the “ocean”.

    How to Play

The game begins when the player to the left of the dealer “fishes” by asking another player if they have a certain card in their hand (e.g. “Do you have any Queens?”). If the player does have the type of card asked for, they must give the asker all of that type they possess. The asker then continues questioning the same or a different player if they have another or the same type of card. If a player does not have the typed asked for, they say “go fish” and the asker picks up the top card from the ocean. The gameplay then moves to the left and the next person fishes for cards.

A player makes a book when they have 4 of a kind. When a book is made, the player places the 4 cards face up in a pile in front of them to verify to the other players that they made a book. The game ends when all 13 books are made. The player with the most books wins. If a player runs out of cards during the game, they may select one from the ocean when it is their turn. If there are no more cards in the ocean, they are out of the game and the number of books they have is final.

For more information on the game Go Fish and its rules, check out Wikipedia's article here or pagat's article here.

    Gameplay Example

Suppose the deck are dealt and you have received your 7 cards. Your hand contains 3 Aces, 1 Three, 1 King, 1 Queen, and 1 Two. It is your turn and because you only need 1 more Ace to make a book, you ask the player in front of you if they have any Aces. They smile and say “go fish”. You reluctantly draw the top card from the ocean and happily see that it is an Ace. You then place the 4 cards in front of you so that everyone can see that you made a book. A round passes and it is your turn again. You ask the same player in front of you if they have any Kings. This time they do not smile and instead give you 3 Kings. You make another book and the gameplay proceeds in your favor.

    Go Fish Variations

    Australian Go Fish

As one can expect, this variation is predominantly played in Australia. For Australian Go Fish, books are made from 2 of a kind instead of the traditional 4. With this variation, Jokers can be used in gameplay.

    Minuman

Minuman is an Indonesian version of Go Fish and means “drink” in English. For the most part,Minuman is similar to traditional Go Fish with the additional rule that players take a drink from an alcoholic beverage if they must draw from the ocean. When the game is finished, the loser must finish their entire drink if they have not already done so.

    Happy Families

Four cards from the original version of Jaques’ Happy Families deck

(Four cards from the original version of Jaques’ Happy Families deck)

Happy Families is an old version of Go Fish invented by John Jaques Jr in 1851. A Happy Families deck consist of 44 illustrated cards. There are 11 families with 4 members each. The families are as follows: Block the Barber, Bones the Butcher, Bun the Baker, Bung the Brewer, Chip the Carpenter, Dip the Dyer, Dose the Doctor, Grits the Grocer, Pots the Painter, Soot the Sweep, and Tape the Tailor. Every family member has a father, a mother, a son (master), and a daughter (miss). Like traditional Go Fish, cards are shuffled, dealt and asked for to create a complete family. Players must ask, however, for specific family members. For example, if one has Mr., Mrs., and Miss Bun the Baker, they may ask for Master Bun the Baker in hopes to complete the family.

Additional information may be found here.

    Educational Go Fish

This version of Go Fish can help students study for school. Instead of the traditional suits, cards are divided into 13 categories. Go Fish American History, for example, can be divided into landmarks, dates, presidents, etc. Each card then has facts about the subject on the card for the player to learn from. A player might ask if someone has any landmarks and receive the Statue of Liberty. This can be a fun way for students to learn about a number of subjects.

    Backstab Fish

Backstab Fish is a variation of Go Fish that normally takes a lot longer than traditional Go Fish. Virtually all of the rules are the same but, two decks are in play with Jokers included. At 108 cards, Backstab Fish can be great in large groups but, can also be enjoyed by a patient small number of players.

    Go Fish Game Rules

    Summary

Double deck Pinochle is a 4 player card game. There are two teams of two players, with partners sitting across from each other. Points are scored in two ways: via "melding" and "trick taking".

After cards are dealt, players combine their cards into particular patterns - called "meld" - to earn points. All players display their meld, and points are recorded.

Next, each person plays a card into a "trick". The highest ranking card wins the trick for the person who played it. The Ace card has the highest rank, meaning it is the most powerful card. Next highest is the 10, followed by King, Queen, and Jack (lowest). Cards in the "trump" suit outrank all other cards.

The only cards in a trick that score points are the Ace, 10, and King - each is worth 1 point.

    Double Deck Pinochle for beginners

    Objective

The objective is to be the first team to reach 500 points.

    Deal

A random player is chosen to be the dealer.

Each player is dealt a hand of 20 cards from a deck of cards containing four A, 10, K, Q, J cards of each suit (a total of 80 cards).

    Bid

Starting with the player to the dealer's left, and proceeding clockwise around the table, each player places a bid. The player who wins the bid gets to choose the trump suit, which can help to win their team meld points and trick points. This makes choosing trump valuable!

However, there are costs to winning the bid. First, you can only choose a trump suit if you have a "marriage" (King and Queen) in that suit. So make sure that you have a marriage when deciding what to bid. Second, in placing a bid, you assert that your team will win at least the number of points bid. For example, if you bid 65, then you pledge that your team will win 65 points. If your team fails to do this, then you lose the number of points bid!

Players may choose to pass instead of bidding. If not passing, they must bid at least 50.

Each player must bid higher than the previous bid made, or pass. Each player may bid more than once, as long as they continue to bid higher than the previous bid.

Bidding continues until 3 consecutive players pass. If no one has placed a bid, the dealer is forced to bid 50. Otherwise, the player with the highest bid wins the bidding war.

Note that if the dealer is forced to bid 50, but has no marriages at all, then their team will lose 50 points automatically.

    Choosing Trump

The player who bid highest now chooses the "trump suit." Cards with the trump suit outrank cards of all other suits.

Choices for trump suit are restricted to suits in which you have a "marriage". If you are choosing trump, but have no marriages at all, your team forfeits and your bid is subtracted from your score!

    Showing Meld

After the trump suit is chosen, players show any "meld" in their hands. A "meld" is a group of cards in a specific pattern. For example, the Jack of Diamonds and Queen of Spades form a "pinochle" meld, which is worth 4 points. Two pinochle melds in your hand are worth 30 points.

During the meld phase, the total meld points for each team are computed. If a team does not have at least 20 meld points, they will not earn any meld points at all! Also, if the bidding team does not have 20 meld, they forfeit the hand, and their bid is subtracted from their score! Regardless, their opponents will earn their meld, provided it is worth at least 20 points.

Meld patterns are given in the following table:

    TypeMeld
    Type I - Runs
    and
    Marriages
    Run - A, 10, K, Q, J
    of trumps
    15150225300
    Royal Marriage
    K, Q of trumps
    481216
    Marriage
    K, Q not trumps
    2468
    Type II - PinochlesPinochle - J Diamond ♦ & Q Spade ♠4306090
Type III - AroundsAces around - A in each suit10100150200
    Kings around - K in each suit880120160
    Queens around - Q in each suit66090120
    Jacks around - J in each suit4406080

A specific card in your hand may belong to more than one meld of different meld types, but it cannot belong to more than one meld within a meld type. For example, if you have Kings around - K♦, K♠, K♥, K♣ - and also a Q♣ card, the K♣ in your Kings around meld will be paired with the Q♣ in a Marriage meld. However, if you have a Run in Clubs - A♣, 10♣, K♣, Q♣, J♣ - the King and Queen in that meld cannot count towards a Royal Marriage. You must have an extra King and Queen of that suit to make up a Royal Marriage meld.

Do not be too concerned about computing melds. Use the "Show Meld" button to show all melds in your hand that do not require a trump suit. The only melds that you will need to find on your own are Runs and Royal Marriages.

    Play

The player who won the bid starts the trick by playing any card, the lead card, from their hand. Play continues in clockwise order.

When following with a card, you must play a card that outranks the highest ranking card in the trick. This is called "crawling".

For example, if the trick started with a King of Diamonds, and you have an A♦, 10♦, and Q♦, then you cannot play the Queen; you must play either the Ace or the 10.

If you do not have any Diamonds, but do have a card in the trump suit, you must play a trump card. If there are any trump cards in the trick already, you must play a trump card that outranks that card, if possible. Otherwise you must play some other trump card.

If you have no cards that outrank cards in the trick, you may play any card in your hand.

After all 4 players have played a card, the trick is taken by whomever played the highest ranking card. Remember that trump cards outrank all other suits.

The trick-taker is awarded 1 point for each Ace, 10, or King in the trick. Other cards are not counted. For example, if there is 1 Jack in the pile, and 2 Aces, and a Queen, then the trick-taker is awarded 2 points.

The trick winner starts the next trick.

The team which takes the last trick gets 2 bonus points, so that the total of both team's trick points always sums to 50.

    Score

After each hand, scores are calculated for each team by adding up the teammate's meld points and trick-taking points.

    Rule of 20

A team with less than 20 meld does not score any meld points.

If the bid-winner's team does not have at least 20 meld points, their bid is subtracted from their score! In this case, their opponent will score meld points, but only if they have 20 meld points or more.

A team that does not take at least 20 points during the trick-taking portion of the game cannot take any points at all; even their meld points are not counted.

If the bid-winner's team does not take at least 20 points during the trick-taking portion of the game, their bid is subtracted from their score!

If the bid-winner's opponents did not have 20 meld points, they may still score points during the trick-taking part of the game. They are only awarded trick points if they score 20 or more points from their tricks.

    Game End

The first team to reach 500 points wins!.

If both teams reach 500 points on the same hand, then the winner is the high-scoring team. If they are tied, the winner is the bidding team.

However, if the "bidder out" option was chosen, and both teams reach 500 on the same hand, then the bidding side wins, even if their score is lower than their opponents. For example if the bidding side has 510 points and the other team has 540, then the bidding side still wins.

    Strategy

    Signalling via a "meld" bid

In Pinochle, it is a valid strategy to use your bid to signal something about your hand to your partner.

Partners often develop unique systems for signalling via bidding, but a commonly used pattern works as follows:

If a player opens with a bid of 50, it usually means they want to choose trump. If their partner is the dealer, it may also mean that they have a marriage, and are offering to choose trump in order to save their partner from being forced to choose trump. Remember that if the dealer is forced to choose trump but does not have a marriage, their team immediately gets 50 points deducted from their score!

An opening bid of 51 means you want to choose trump in a specific suit and also have some Aces in other suits (so the hand is reasonably strong).

An opening bid of 52 or more is an indication of the "trumpless" meld points in the player's hand (i.e. all meld exceptRuns or Royal Marriages). It indicates 20 meld points of this type (2 x 10 = 20). Similarly, 53 bid indicates 30 meld, etc.

If a player bids 1 more than the previous bidder, it indicates a desire to choose trump.

If a player bids 2, 3, 4, ... more points than the previous bidder, they are telling their partner how many "trumpless meld points" they have. For example, suppose the first player bid 53 to show they have 30 meld. If you have 40 trumpless meld, you then bid 57 (4 extra points indicates 40 meld).

Bids of 60 or more are usually made to force other players out of the bidding. Remember that you are required to score your bid in meld and trick points, so bid wisely! If you bid 60, and only take 20 points in tricks, you must have 40 meld points between you and your partner to make up the difference.

    General Bidding Strategy:

    • When thinking about whether to bid or pass, use the "Show Meld" button to look for Marriages. Then, check to see whether you can get Runs in the suit of any Marriages. Runs will yield more meld points (see the meld table).
    • Don't bid unless you have at least one Marriage!
    • You will probably have more success winning trick points if you have a relatively large number of cards in the trump suit.

    General Playing Strategy:

    • It's usually best to play your Aces first. It gives your partner an opportunity to feed you lower point cards.
    • If your partner played a high card that is likely to win, you may want to slough your lowest ranking point cards so that they take as many points as possible, assuming that they win the trick.
    • Try to keep track of which cards are played, especially the high cards (Ace, 10). If you notice all Aces in a suit have been played, you may be safe leading with a 10 of that suit (unless it is likely to be trumped).

    History

Double deck Pinochle is derived from Pinochle, which comes from a 19th-century French card game called Bezique.

Card Games Every Kid Should Know: Pick a card, any card

Pick a card, any card, and try to make a match.

      9. Kings In the Corner

The goal is simple: get rid of all your cards! Each player is dealt seven cards. The rest go in a deck in the middle of the table, with one card flipped over at each side of the deck. Like Solitaire in reverse, you’ve got to stack the preceding card in the sequence, but the opposite color. So, if the five of diamonds is showing, you can play a four of spades or clubs. If you have a king, you can lay it down on the table “in the corner” to start a new pile. Get all the rules to play and scoring here.

      10. Forehead Poker

This is a fun, super simple two-player game for little guys. Place the deck between you and your child. Each of you grabs a card without peaking at it and places it on your forehead so that your opponent can see it, but you can't. Have your little one guess if their own card is higher or lower than yours. If they’re right, they take the pair. If they’re wrong, it’s yours. Take turns and work your way through the deck. The person with the most cards at the end is the winner.

Math Skills Card Games For Kids

      11. Math Minute to Win

Here's one for kids learning addition or multiplication math facts. Let the aces serve as ones and jacks serve as tens. (Queens and Kings can be elevens and twelves if your child is ready!) Set a timer for a minute and turn over two cards. Your child must add (or multiple) the numbers as fast as she can to earn as many cards as possible before the timer runs out. Play two rounds, and try to beat your score from the first round.

      12. Math Wars

Sharpen up those addition skills! In this game, face cards are worth 10 and the ace is 11. Deal every player four cards. Simply add up the value. Whoever has the higher number wins the hand. Play the best out of five games.

      13. Blitz (aka 31)

With simple rules, just three cards to hold, and math skills to practice, this game is perfect for young hands. To win, gather three cards of the same suit that add up to 31 (like an ace, which is worth 11 points, and two face cards, worth 10 points each). Start by shuffling the deck and then putting all the cards face down in a single pile except for one, which you turn over (this will become the discard pile). When a player has a turn, she either pulls from the top of the discard pile (if that card is helpful) or from the pull pile. You must discard a card you pulled or another card from your hand so you keep three cards in your hand at all times. Once a player has three cards of the same suit that add up to 31, the player reveals his/her hand and yells "Blitz!"

      14. Seven-in-a-Row

Place seven cards face-down in a row in front of each player. Player 1 turns over her first card. She declares if she thinks the next card will be higher or lower. If it is, the process continues. If she's wrong (or if the number is the same), she stops and it's the next player's turn. Player 2 will see if he can get further than Player 1. Essentially, everyone plays until they're wrong, and the first person to finish their row of seven is the winner. Players get a new hand of seven cards with each turn.

      15. Spit

In this two-player game, try to get rid of all your cards first. Both players play at the same time, yelling "Spit" to start play. Play fast, play one-handed, play ruthlessly. Read detailed instructions for playing this slightly complicated but amazingly fun classic camp game here. (The video is very helpful!)

      16. Spoons

Sit in a circle and put in the center a pile of spoons that's exactly one less than the number of players. Deal four cards to everyone for their hand. The dealer picks up a card from the deck and discards one, which he passes to the person on the left. That person does the same, and the play continues with everyone picking passing cards quickly around the circle. If you get four of a kind, quietly grab a spoon. When players notice a spoon is missing, they quietly grab one, too. Whoever is left without a spoon, is out.

The game continues until one person is left: the winner! This fast-paced game will have your whole family cracking up in no time.

      17. Snap

It’s a snap to play this game! Deal out all the cards as evenly as you can among your players, making little decks in front of everyone. One at a time, players turn over the top card of their decks to make a face-up pile. When someone turns over a card that matches one that’s already face-up on another player's pile, scream “Snap!” as loud as you can. Whoever calls it first wins both face-up piles and adds the cards to the bottom of their face-down pile.

Keep playing until someone wins all of the cards and that player wins the game. If you run out of cards, just flip over your face-up cards and keep going. (You can penalize players for calling a false “Snap!” but we ignore that rule in my house to keep the peace.)

      18. Snip Snap Snorem

Gather three or more people and deal out all the cards. Everyone looks at their cards, and the player to the left of the dealer goes first. The first person plays a card face-up on the table. For whatever card is played, everyone else has to match the rank in other suits. Say "pass" if you don't have it. The player who plays the fourth card gets to choose any card in their hand for the next round. For extra fun, say "Snip" when the second card is played, "Snap" for the third, and "Snorem" for the last card in the book. The first person to get rid of all his cards is the winner.

      19. Beggar My Neighbor

Your child will definitely be begging to play another round of this game! Deal out all the cards as evenly as you can so that each person has a face-down deck in front of them. Player 1 turns over her top card. If it's a number card, her turn ends. But if it's a face card or ace, the next player must pay an “honor” by turning over cards (four cards for an ace, three for a king, two for a queen, or 1 for a jack). If these honor cards are all numbered cards, Player 1 gets to keep the bunch. But, if a face card is turned over while paying an honor, the next player pays a fresh honor to Player 2. Keep going until one person has all the cards: the winner!

Throw Throw Burrito is a hilarious fast-paced game that's like a cross between Spoons and Dodge Ball. Quickly pass cards to make matches, and if you match certain action cards, start a burrito battle where squishy toy burritos will fly (better duck!). This game is great for older kids and any good sport that doesn’t mind getting a burrito chucked at them. It's the newest game from the creators of Exploding Kittens, so you know kids will love it.

Pro tip: Our family plays a lot of cards. And one thing I have learned is that frustrated kids can't learn or play any game well. So for little hands, kiddie cardholders can be super helpful in eliminating the frustration of falling cards!
