U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card Review: More Details

If you are the kind of spender who prefers the ability to customize their rewards, the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card offers a unique rewards rate designed to shift as your spending does. Cardholders get to choose their own bonus categories to earn a generous rate of cash back, making it a good choice for users looking to tailor rewards.

Earning rate

The U.S. Bank Cash+ card has a unique rewards earning setup – allowing users to choose two categories each quarter to earn 5 percent cash back ($2,000 purchase limit per quarter). Cardholders can also choose an everyday category, such as gas stations or grocery stores, to earn 2 percent cash back. All other purchases will earn 1 percent cash back.

The ability to choose your own bonus category is a recent trend among rewards cards, as it allows the user to shift rewards to match their spending. Since you can update your choice categories each quarter and match them to your budget, the 5 percent category can be incredibly lucrative. It does, however, come with a spend cap that can limit earning.

Tip: Don’t forget to select your bonus category each quarter. If you don’t enroll in the categories of your choice, you’ll only earn 1 percent cash back on all purchases for that quarter.

Unfortunately, the categories you have to choose from on the U.S. Bank Cash+ card aren’t always the most high-budget options. In the past, choices for the 5 percent category on the Cash+ card have included categories such as gym memberships, utilities and fast food. For many spenders, these can earn you quite a bit in rewards, but other cards allow cardholders to choose from categories that have a higher average spend.

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card, for example, lets users choose a category to earn 3 percent cash back, from gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores or home improvements and furnishings, and an automatic 2 percent cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs ($2,500 combined limit on choice category/grocery store/wholesale club purchases each quarter, then 1 percent). With lucrative categories like gas and dining, we estimate the overall earning rate on this card is higher than the U.S. Bank Cash+. In fact – even with a 5 percent category – we estimate the U.S. Bank Cash+ earning rate falls below many popular cash back cards. (Note: To calculate the estimated earning rate, we took average spending statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to estimate category and overall spend.)

Despite a low average rate, the U.S. Bank Cash+ can still be a good option for cardholders who spend a lot in the card’s 5 percent bonus category options.

Sign-up bonus

The U.S. Bank Cash+ comes with a decent sign-up bonus – $150 if you spend $500 in the first 90 days – which can be a great perk for users looking for a quick influx of cash. Though the intro offer is certainly a plus, it is average for a card of its class.

Redeeming cash back

While redeeming cash back with the U.S. Bank Cash+ card is fairly simple, it comes with a few drawbacks. Once you’ve earned at least $20 in cash back, you can choose to redeem it for a statement credit or a direct deposit into a U.S. Bank checking, savings or money market account. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to redeem for a paper check or a deposit into an account with another bank. Also, unlike many of its competitors, U.S. Bank puts an expiration date on your rewards. You’ll need to redeem your rewards fairly often, as cash back expires 36 months after the billing cycle in which it is earned.

Additionally, U.S. Bank doesn’t allow cardholders to transfer rewards to any other account.

Transferring a balance

In addition to a customizable rewards rate, the U.S. Bank Cash+ card comes with a modest balance transfer offer. New cardholders receive a 0 percent introductory APR on balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles (13.99 to 23.99 percent variable APR thereafter). If you are looking to pay down some debt over time without accruing interest – but don’t want to sacrifice a rewards program – this can be a huge benefit. However, if you are looking for a long period to pay down a balance, you can find cards with much longer introductory periods.

On the downside, the Cash+ card does charge a 3 percent (or $5, whichever is higher) balance transfer fee. This can add up to quite a large charge on larger balances. Plus, it doesn’t come with an intro APR on new purchases, so you’ll have to be careful not to charge more than you can pay off each month if you don’t want any additional charges. The ongoing APR on the card is on the high side, so it is a good general rule to avoid carrying a balance.

Other features

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature card comes with a few extra perks that make it a valuable choice for frequent travelers.

  • Car rental insurance – For rentals booked and paid with your card, you can be reimbursed in case of damage or theft, in excess of your other insurance coverage.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement – If your luggage is lost on a trip paid with your Cash+ card, you can be eligible for reimbursement.
  • Roadside assistance – To ensure you always have access to roadside assistance, you’ll have access to 24/7 service.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Bank Cash+ card does charge a foreign transaction fee of 2 to 3 percent, limiting its appeal cardholders who frequently travel abroad.

Approval odds

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature card is designed for users with good to excellent credit (above 670), so you’ll want to ensure you meet those qualifications before you apply. Additionally, the sign-up bonus is only available to new account holders, so if you have ever had the U.S. Bank Cash+ card, you won’t be eligible for the offer.

Customer service

Among major issuers, U.S. Bank doesn’t have the best customer service reputation. In J.D. Power’s 2020 customer satisfaction survey, the bank scored 786, a score 90 percent of major credit card issuers surveyed beat. That said, U.S. Bank does offer 24/7 customer service and an online chat feature, and the bank’s app receives good reviews. It rates 4.7 out of 5 in the Google Play Store, but 4.8 out of 5 in the Apple App Store.

How does the U.S. Bank Cash+ card compare to other cash back cards?

While the U.S. Bank Cash+ card can be very lucrative for some spenders, we estimate its average rewards rate below many other cash back cards. Here are a few popular alternatives — that might make more sense for many cardholders.

Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card

If the idea of choosing your own bonus category appeals to you, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card has a similar earning scheme. Cardholders can earn 3 percent cash back on a category of their choice – gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores or home improvements and furnishings. Users also earn 2 percent cash back on grocery store and wholesale club purchases ($2,500 combined purchase limit on 2 and 3 percent categories each quarter) and 1 percent cash back on general purchases.

All of the choice categories on the Bank of America card have the potential to be lucrative, especially because cardholders can update their choice once per calendar month. Plus, Bank of America provides detailed spending data on their mobile app to help you determine which category is best for you.

Citi Double Cash Card

For cardholders who prefer a flat rate of cash back to keeping track of bonus categories, the Citi Double Cash offers one of the most generous rates available. Users earn 1 percent cash back on everything they buy, plus an additional 1 percent cash back as they pay for those purchases – for up to 2 percent cash back on every purchase. If you are the kind of spender that prefers to put all your charges on one card, the Citi Double Cash is a great option.

Chase Freedom Flex

The Chase Freedom also offers bonus categories for users to earn a little extra cash back, but it works a little differently to the U.S. Bank Cash+. Rather than allow users to choose their own bonus categories each quarter, Chase Freedom cardholders have the option to enroll in rotating bonus categories (determined by Chase) to earn 5% cash back on (up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter, then 1 percent). Cardholders also earn 5% cash back on Ultimate Rewards travel, 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year, 3% back on dining and drugstore purchases and 1% back on all other purchases. The Freedom Flex card’s rotating categories are often very easy to rack up rewards in and match average spending.

Additionally, the rewards you’ll earn on the Freedom Flex are much more flexible than cash back with the U.S. Bank Cash+. Chase allows you to redeem rewards for cash back, merchandise, travel purchases or even transfer to another Chase Ultimate Rewards card to potentially boost their value.

Why get the U.S. Bank Cash+ card?

  • You want the flexibility to choose your own bonus category.
  • You prefer cash back to points or miles.
  • You want time to pay off a balance transfer interest free without sacrificing rewards.

How to use the U.S. Bank Cash+ card:

  • Spend at least $500 in the first 90 days to earn the sign-up bonus.
  • Keep track of your spending each quarter to help choose your bonus categories.
  • Be sure to enroll in your bonus category choices on time each quarter to avoid earning less rewards.
  • If you transfer a balance, make a plan to pay it off in the first 12 billing cycles as the interest rate can be high.

Is the U.S. Bank Cash+ card worth it?

The U.S. Bank Cash+ card is a decent option for cardholders seeking flexibility, but its relatively low earning rate and lack of redemption flexibility limit its appeal. Cardholders can likely earn more cash back by opting for a generous flat rate card or a similar bonus category card with a more flexible rewards structure.

US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Rewards Getting Watered Down?

ccwatcherCash Back Cards, US Bank

US Bank Cash Plus Credit CardAs expected, some tweaks are being made to the US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card, with many of the long-rumored changes to its rewards program soon to become a reality. With all the impending changes, will the card still be worthwhile?

What are the changes?
One change was already made in Q2 that most would consider a downgrade–the bill pay, home improvement and airline categories were replaced as 5% bonus category options with the bookstores, sporting goods and cell phone categories.

In addition, the following benefits are due to be cut from the rewards program:

  • Currently, cardholders earn a bonus $25 Visa gift card every time they redeem at least $100 in rewards at once. In the May statement sent out to cardholders, however, US Bank indicated that effective July 1, 2013, cardholders would only be able to earn one such $25 Cash+ Bonus per calendar year.
  • Currently, cardholders earn an additional 0.25% rebate on all spending for having a US Bank Gold Checking account or an additional 0.5% rebate on all spending for having a Platinum Checking account. Both of these checking bonuses are due to go away after August 10, 2013.
  • Most importantly of all, you are only eligible to earn a 5% rebate on the first $2,000 in net purchases each quarter in your selected 5% categories. Any spending beyond that will only earn a 1% rebate. This language is already in place on US Bank’s website for new applicants to the credit card.

While disappointing, these changes were largely expected. And it’s important to note that the card still compares favorably to its competitors, even after the changes. Unlike the other rotating quarterly bonus cash back cards such as the Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend and Discover it cards, you have much greater flexibility in selecting your 5% bonus categories. Plus, the $2,000 quarterly spending cap on the 5% bonus categories still exceeds the $1,500 spending cap of Chase Freedom and Discover it. You do also get to select a category in which to earn 2%, unlike the other rotating quarterly bonus cards. The changes, however, do put the card much more on par with these competitors, instead of being far above them.

U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card Review: Choose Your Bonus

People with good to excellent credit looking for a cash rewards credit card without an annual fee can wring some value out of the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Card—as long as you don’t mind a little ongoing card maintenance. The card gives more control over how you earn rewards by letting you choose your own bonus categories, although the categories themselves are underwhelming. While there’s a limit to the rewards you can earn in the highest-earning tier, your other cash rewards are unlimited.

Pros
  • Easy-to-earn bonus for new cardholders

  • Choice of bonus rewards categories

  • High rewards cap for a 5% card

Cons
  • Category challenges

  • Foreign transaction fee

  • Quarterly registration required to earn the most rewards

Pros Explained

  • Easy-to-earn bonus for new cardholders: For a limited time, earn a $200 bonus after making $1,000 in eligible purchases within the first 120 days of account opening, which most cardholders will find the new cardholder bonus a breeze to earn.
  • Choice of bonus rewards categories: Other credit cards offering 5% cash back have bank-selected bonus categories rotating quarterly. Cash+ cardholders can choose two bonus rewards categories each quarter. You can also choose your 2% cash-back category from three popular options.
  • High rewards cap for a 5% card: Competing 5% no-annual-fee cards cap rewards at $1,500, but you can use this card until you hit $2,000. And there’s no cap at all for the 2% back category you choose quarterly.

Cons Explained

  • Category challenges: Earning 5% back is great, but eligible purchase categories are limited. If you frequently shop online from many retailers, at wholesale clubs, at drug stores, or home improvement stores, or spend a lot on travel or entertainment (other than movie theaters), this card won’t reward you for those popular categories. As well, choosing between groceries, restaurants, or gas for your 2% category may be difficult as these tend to be common, high-spend categories for most people.
  • Foreign transaction fee: This isn't the best card to use for international purchases. With its foreign transaction fee, you'll pay up to 3% on purchases made in a currency other than U.S. dollars and 2% on purchases made in U.S. dollars.
  • Quarterly registration window required: While you do get the flexibility to choose your cash-back categories, you have to sign up by the deadline to earn bonus rewards. Otherwise, purchases in bonus categories will only earn 1% back instead of 2% or 5%.

Bonus for New Cardholders

For a limited time, earn a $200 bonus after making $1,000 in eligible purchases within the first 120 days of account opening. This is a good sign-up bonus offer for a card without an annual fee, and the low minimum spend requirement will allow most people to earn the bonus within the first few weeks of opening the account.

Earning Rewards

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card lets you earn 5% cash back (which U.S. Bank calls “Rebates”) on your first combined $2,000 in two categories you choose each quarter. You can also earn unlimited 2% back on purchases at some gas stations, grocery stores, or restaurants—you choose which. Finally, earn 1% back on all your other purchases.

To give you an idea of available choices, here are the 5% Cash+ categories for January through March 2021:

  • TV, internet, streaming services
  • Home utilities
  • Ground transportation excluding parking-related fees
  • Certain clothing stores
  • Cellphone providers
  • Electronics stores
  • Membership fees at gyms and fitness centers
  • Fast food
  • Sporting goods stores
  • Department stores
  • Furniture stores
  • Movie theaters

Bonus categories have remained largely the same for the past few quarters, but could change at any time.

Other credit cards with a 3% or 5% quarterly rotating rewards are dictated by the card issuer, but favor the usual high-earn-and-spend suspects: restaurants, grocery stores, online shopping, and more.

If you’re looking for a lower-hassle commitment, know that a 1.5% flat-rate card could earn you significantly less. However, a card that gives 2% back without caps in total may be a better deal, with less hassle. Based on our calculations and BLS data, this is what your cash back might look like, annually:

Potential Cash+ Card Earnings
Category Annual Spend% BackU.S. Bank Cash+  Amount Back
Clothing Stores  $1,8835% $94.15
Ground Transportation  $1,0005%$50.00
Grocery Stores  $4,4432%$88.86
Everything Else$16,9671%$169.67
Total: $24,293$402.68

With a 1.5% back card, you’d earn $364 a year, and with a 2% back card, $485 a year—and you won’t have to do all your clothing shopping from a limited selection of stores, or manage categories.

Many US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card categories have exclusions, so review the guidelines carefully. For example, you can’t get cash back from Walmart, Costco, and Target purchases. You can purchase clothing at Sears, but can’t buy furniture from Sears, nor can you buy online from Sears.com.

Redeeming Rewards

The card comes with a few choices for redeeming your rewards. Options include a statement credit; direct deposit into your U.S. Bank checking, savings, or money market account; or adding to a rewards debit card.

It’s unusual for rewards to expire, but U.S. Bank rewards expire 36 months after they were earned. Use them as they accumulate versus waiting too long.

There’s no minimum redemption requirement for a statement credit or direct deposit. However, if you opt to redeem your cash back as a U.S. Bank Rewards Visa debit card, there’s a $20 minimum redemption requirement and you must redeem rewards in $5 increments.

How to Get the Most Out of This Card

Consider your upcoming spending when you’re selecting your 5% bonus categories. To max out spending in the 5% categories, you’ll need to spend $2,000 in the two categories each quarter, which breaks down to $666.67 in monthly spending. For example, you may choose electronics stores if you’re doing a lot of fourth-quarter holiday shopping.

Based on the available 5% cash back categories, and the two-category limit, reaching the $2,000 spending cap each quarter may be a challenge for many cardholders. Don’t be tempted to overspend in order to earn the maximum cash back.

Consider pairing this card with one that consistently earns in a category that could otherwise be neglected due to category choice, or won’t earn more than 1% in any case.

Set a calendar reminder or U.S. Bank text reminder for the bonus category selection window. Visit your account online or call customer service at least five days before each quarter starts so you have the full quarter to max out your spending. You can choose your rewards up to 45 days before the quarter starts.

You can still select bonus categories after the quarter has started, but only earn cash-back rewards at the 1% rate until your selection becomes effective. U.S. Bank advises that it can take up to three business days for the registration to take effect.

U.S. Bank earns the rating of “below average” in J.D. Power’s 2020 Credit Card Satisfaction Study.

The card comes with a few noteworthy customer experience benefits including 24/7 U.S.-based customer service, free TransUnion FICO score, budgeting tools, cardmember agreement guide, credit wellness center, and spend analysis online reporting.

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card has two unusual fees. The first is a 2% charge for foreign transactions made in U.S. dollars.

Users also earn 2 percent cash back on grocery store and wholesale club purchases ($2,500 combined purchase limit on 2 and 3 percent categories each quarter) and 1 percent cash back on general purchases.

The U.S. Bank Cash+ us bank cash plus signature card is a decent option for cardholders seeking flexibility, but its relatively low earning rate www citizens bank com lack of redemption flexibility limit its appeal.

U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card Review: Us bank cash plus signature card Your Bonus

If us bank cash plus signature card looking for a lower-hassle commitment, know that a 1.5% flat-rate card could earn you significantly less. However, a card that gives 2% back without caps in total may be a better deal, with less hassle. Based on our calculations and BLS data, this is what your cash back might look like, annually:

Potential Cash+ Card Earnings
Category Annual Spend% BackU.S. Bank Cash+  Amount Back
Clothing Stores  $1,8835% $94.15
Ground Transportation  $1,0005%$50.00
Grocery Stores  $4,4432%$88.86
Everything Else$16,9671%$169.67
Total: $24,293$402.68

With a 1.5% back card, you’d earn $364 a year, and with a 2% back card, $485 a year—and you won’t have to do all your clothing shopping from a limited selection of stores, or manage categories. how do i check my fidelity account balance online US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card categories have exclusions, so review the guidelines carefully. For example, you can’t get cash back from Walmart, Costco, and Target purchases. You can purchase clothing at Sears, but can’t buy furniture from Sears, nor can you buy online from Sears.com.

Redeeming Rewards

The card comes us bank cash plus signature card a few choices for redeeming your rewards. Options include a statement credit; direct deposit into your U.S. Bank checking, savings, or us bank cash plus signature card market account; or adding to a rewards debit card.

Consider pairing this card with one that consistently earns in a category that could otherwise be neglected due to category choice, or won’t earn more than 1% in any case.
