AT&T actress Milana Vayntrub reveals she now hides her body in adverts over online bullying

Actor Milana Vayntrub, who has been the star of AT&T campaigns for years, spoke about the body shaming and online sexual harassment she has been facing after her new commercial.

The 34-year-old plays the famed character of salesperson Lily Adams in the commercial and has been the face of the media company since 2013.

Ms Vayntrub recently took to Twitter to respond to the comments she has been receiving following her recent adverts that air during the NCAA Tournament where people noticed she was behind a desk.

"Been getting a lot of ‘Why are they placing her body like that in those ads?’” Ms Vayntrub wrote on Twitter. “Well, I direct the ads. I place myself like that.”

“And it’s because of the thousands of unwelcome comments I receive about my body. You’ve lost the privilege of looking at it until I feel safe again," she said.

The American actor, who has also acted in TV shows like This Is Us and Days Of Our Lives, used to stand in front of the camera in most of the company’s commercial, sometimes in the company’s stores, and during the Covid-19 pandemic, sitting on a couch.

However, Ms Vayntrub’s response to the unwanted comments about her body triggered more of such comments about her, where people began complimenting her body, only to be corrected by others who pointed why it was wrong.

“Really impressive how many dudes think they should respond to this by commenting on her body,” a Twitter user Erin M Callahan wrote.

“Bro. She’s tired of people talking about her body/looks in any context,” another user Ben Nicolls wrote. “Telling her she’s super pretty is not the move. Take the conversation away from her appearance. PERIOD.”

The actor and activist spoke about online sexual harassment earlier last year as well on an Instagram live where she read out some of the derogatory comments she was receiving. She also said her old photos from her college pool party were also getting circulated. “I am not consenting to any of this,” she reiterated.

Mr Vayntrub has been hugely popular as Lily and her return to the commercial as AT&T launched two new adverts in 2020 after a break of three years was highly celebrated. She had been a part of 40 ads with the company between 2013 and 2017.

Jim Kimberly, director of corporate communications at AT&T, in a statement to Yahoo Life, said: "We will not tolerate the inappropriate comments and harassment of Milana Vayntrub, the talented actor and director who portrays Lily in our ads.”

“Last summer, we disabled or deleted these comments on our social sites. We continue to fight to support her and our values, which appreciate and respect all women."

Yahoo Life said a similar message was circulated last year by the company.

What started out as a one-off commercial turned into a three-year run. Within the last 5-10 years, how many commercial characters do you actually recall? She’s definitely one of them.

Right under your nose.

Here’s Where the AT&T Girl Is

Vayntrub ended up as Sloane Sandburg in NBC’s This is Us. It sounds like of those emotional dramas.

NBC describes the show as:

A provocative ensemble drama, This Is Us follows the stories of a family at different stages in their lives. The emotionally honest, intergenerational drama explores an array of topics including marriage, abortion, racial identity, body image, the challenges of transracial adoption, and hurdles of parenting in a way that creates an open dialogue.

That’s pretty PR-ish. Its initial season received good reviews. NBC must believe in it since they picked it up for two more seasons.

I might watch it based on what I’ve read and seen about it. My testosterone apply for amazon credit card canada may drop doing so, but then, I’m so manly, what do I care. My chest hairs are growing through the holes in my shirt as we speak.

What’s most interesting is the career arc of Vayntrub. Imagine an actress, meant only to appear in one cell phone commercial, transforming into a potential At&t spokesperson lily winning star. Think of Tina Fey or Bob Odenkirk shilling phones early in their career and where they ended up today. That could be Milana Vayntrub.

Chubby Baby

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Vayntrub immigrated to the United States at age two. Her journey to Hollywood looked like a college kid’s summer vacation, making her way through the Soviet Union, Austria and Italy. Except her family escaped due to religious persecution and a lack of job opportunities, not because of a backpacking adventure.

That’s Milana as a baby. I wonder what her first joke was.

Baby Commercials, Bit Parts and Starring Roles

Vayntrub reached Hollywood at age five and the toy company Mattel put her in Barbie commercials. Fast forward to her graduating from UC San Diego with a communications degree.

Before This is Us, Vayntrub had bit parts in House of Lies, Silicon Valley and Key and Peele. Watch her as the sexy vampire in the “Sexy Vampires” sketch. She’s the one to the right of Peele.

She also has a credit for Ghostbusters as “Subway Rat Woman.” I feel like she could’ve dropped the mic right there. Subway Rat Woman. When she read for the part, do you think she said, “I was BORN to play ‘Subway Rat Woman’.”

She’s Kinda Funny

Vayntrub’s also quick-witted and funny as hell. She joined Upright Citizens Brigade, the sketch comedy group started by Amy Poehler (among others). Vayntrub’s at the Los Angeles location and you can catch her bi-weekly show. Report back to me how it goes.

She used to have a YouTube channel, “Live Prude Girls,” with actress Stevie Nelson. Sadly that’s no longer active. The two made a great team. The Comic Con interview that got them kicked out for asking an “inappropriate” question gives an idea of their talents.

Also, she yells nuts in this video. Hehe.

Vayntrub’s Politically Active

Probably the most notoriety Vayntrub’s received so far is for her activism. A year ago, she filmed a mini-documentary, “Milana Can’t Do Nothing”. The documentary came about by happenstance. Vayntrub traveled to Greece on vacation and while there, learned of the refugee crisis. After that, she flew to the island of Lesbos (hehe) and started filming.

She sums up her purpose in the video:

“I don’t really know what I’m going to do but I can’t do nothing. I’m not going to be a passive citizen anymore. I want to be a force for good.”

Meanwhile, you still suck Cheetos dust off your fingers all day.

Vayntrub’s Mission Helping Refugees

From there she started the organization, Can’t Do Nothing. Their mission is to help “new and thriving organizations like The Syria Fund, Boat Refugee Foundation, and Off At&t spokesperson lily Health to help everyone spread their voice, time, and money to help thousands of refugees.”

To recap Milayna Vayntrub’s career arc so far: playing a solid role on an NBC show, helping refugees through the non-profit organization she started and working her sketch show with UCB where’s she probably way funnier than you. A future Emmy isn’t out of the question.

You, meanwhile, managed to wear clean underwear today. Congrats.

Milana Vayntrub, AT&T Ad Star and Former Refugee, Launches #CantDoNothing Campaign to Help Syrian Refugees

As the Syrian refugee crisis continues to worsen, one actress is using her platform to encourage Americans to take action by sharing their money, time or voice instead of sitting idly by while thousands suffer.

While vacationing with her father in Greece, actress Milana Vayntrub, best known for playing the bubbly Lily Adams character in a series of AT&T commercials, was struck by the thousands of Syrian refugees risking their lives to cross the sea and find safety for their families.

After witnessing the crisis firsthand, Vayntrub was even more disturbed by the number of Americans who are oblivious to the devastating situation, or simply unsure of how to help.

"I had an embarrassingly little amount [of knowledge of the Syrian refugee crisis before going to Greece]. It's not something that came up in a lot of my social media, and the American news covers it an embarrassingly small amount," she wrote in a recent essay for Pop Sugar.

"When I was in Greece I would flip through the channels in my hotel room and see the Russian news talking about it all day, and BBC and other international news channels, and then you would go to CNN and it was talking about Donald Trump and the Emmys. And it was embarrassing, it was embarrassing to be American, but it also helped me understand why I didn't know more."

According to the UNHCR, 4.6 million Syrians are refugees, and 6.6 million are displaced within Syria; half are children. Most Syrian refugees remain in the Middle East, in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, while about 10 percent of the refugees have fled to Europe.

In an effort to make a difference, Vayntrub started an organization, #CantDoNothing, which helps everyday individuals have a real impact and assist refugees globally, whether it's donating money or signing on with volunteer groups. She also made a mini-documentary about the crisis, which she recently posted to YouTube.

"#CantDoNothing is the compassion aspect, it's the humanitarian aspect of the crisis - it's not political. There's no other motivation here. These are people going through a hard time and there are millions of them - we must be able to do something," Vayntrub explains.

One of the simplest -- and most effective ways -- people can get involved is through social media, the actress says. She encourages individuals to spread the word online with the #CantDoNothing hashtag.

"Spreading awareness is one of the goals of #CantDoNothing, and that's what the social movement is about, too. That's why the hashtag 'CantDoNothing' is really a way for us to get the word out." she writes.

"Some people would say we live in a much more complacent generation, even though we have more information than we've ever had. In the '60s there were revolts and revolution - and now there are hashtags. How do we use that to create a revolution online?"

Although the movement was launched less than a month ago, #CantDoNothing is already supporting a number of thriving organizations such as The Syria Fund, Boat Refugee Foundation, and Off Track Health.

For Vayntrub, the crisis hits close to home, as she is herself a refugee. In the late 1980's, her family was forced to flee the Soviet Union amid widespread persecution of Jews.

"I remember being not American. I remember being an outsider, and the transition that my parents had to go through, learning the language and trying to get work," the actress told the Huffington Post. "So I definitely feel close to the plight of an immigrant, let alone the plight of a refugee."

She acknowledges that the issue is controversial for many, particularly amid concern that the terrorist groups may be using the refugee crisis to smuggle extremists into Western countries.

However, Vayntrub urges people to adopt an attitude of mercy and remember that many of the refugees are fleeing the very groups that Americans fear, having themselves been victims of terrorism.

"We're at&t spokesperson lily on the same team," she writes. "America is a wealthy country with a lot of resources - that are allocated in some ways that are appropriate or not appropriate - but there's this quote I once read that's stuck with me: 'When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence.'"

"We're all on the same team," she writes. "America is a wealthy country with a lot of resources - that are allocated in some ways that are appropriate or not appropriate - but there's this quote I once read that's stuck with me: 'When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence.'"

She said on Sunday: "Let me tell you I am not consenting to any of this I do not want any of this.

"The photos that have come out of me that are super cleavagey are from like a pool party I went to at college over a decade ago."

Vayntrub appeared to read one of the live comments before saying: "Reporting them all is, it's, honestly, there's like so many more of them than I have time to report."

Social media users were making comments about her body

Another watcher commented that the abuse was "just a meme" and will disappear "in one month," which Vayntrub said she hopes would be the case.

"In the meantime, I'm hurting and it's bringing up a lot of feelings of sexual assault and I am just like, ya know, walking my dog and like getting messages from people who have distorted my pictures to like get likes on their accounts."

As the comments came flooding in Vayntrub acknowledged them and used them as her reason to end the livestream.

AT&T have also lashed out at Instagram users who have commented about Vayntrub's body on the post and have since disabled the comment section.

"We don't condone sexual harassment of employees in the workplace or on our social channels," the company replied to one user who commented on Vayntrub breasts.

It told another person who posted similar comments: "Your overshares aren't welcome here."

A spokesperson for AT&T said: "We will not tolerate the inappropriate comments and harassment of Milana Vayntrub, the talented actor that portrays Lily in our ads.

"We have disabled or deleted these comments on our social content that includes Lily and we will continue to fight to support her and our values, which appreciate and respect all women."
