Which States Are Split Into Two Time Zones?

There are 37 time zones in the world and six of those (or seven during Daylight Savings) cover the 50 states that make up the United States. Within those time zones, 13 states are divided into two zones.

Quite often, just a small portion of these states are in a different time zone than the rest of the state. But South Dakota, Kentucky, and Tennessee are nearly cut in half by the time zone change. This is not unusual, as time zones throughout the world zig and zag along lines of longitude with no distinct pattern. But why are time zones like this, and how exactly is the United States split?

Why Are the Time Zones So Crooked?

Time zones are crooked because it is up to each government to regulate them in their country. There are standard time zones for the world, but where exactly those lie and whether to split the country up according to these is a decision made by individual nations.

The United States, for example, had its time zones standardized by Congress. When first drawing the lines, officials tried to avoid splitting metropolitan areas and took other factors into account that might have complicated life for each area's residents. In many places, U.S. time zone lines do actually follow state borders, but that is certainly not always the case, as you will see in the following 13 states.

2 States Split by Pacific and Mountain Time

The majority of western states are in the Pacific time zone. Idaho and Oregon are the two states with small portions following Mountain time.

  • Idaho: The entire lower half of Idaho is in the Mountain time zone and only the northern tip of the state uses Pacific time.
  • Oregon: Almost all of Oregon is on Pacific time, and only a small area of the east-central border of the state observes Mountain time.

5 States Split by Mountain and Central Time

From Arizona and New Mexico to Montana, the southwestern and Rocky Mountain states mostly use Mountain time. Arizona (aside from Navajo Nation) does not observe DST and therefore "shares" time, as a MST state, with Pacific states during Daylight Savings. However, this time zone peaks over the borders of a few states, leaving five states with a Central-Mountain time split.

  • Kansas: A small chunk of the far western border of Kansas uses Mountain time, but the majority of the state is on Central time.
  • Nebraska: The western portion of Nebraska is on Mountain time but most of the state's population uses Central time. The cities of Valentine, North Platte, and the capital of Lincoln, for example, are all in the Central time zone.
  • North Dakota: The southwestern corner of North Dakota is on Mountain time but the rest of the state uses Central.
  • South Dakota: This state is almost cut in half by the two time zones. All of eastern South Dakota is on Central time, while the majority of the western half—which includes Rapid City and the Black Hills mountain range—follow Mountain time.
  • Texas: The extreme western corner of Texas that borders New Mexico and Mexico is on Mountain time. This includes the city of El Paso. The rest of the state, including the entire panhandle, is on Central.

5 States Split by Central and Eastern Time

On the other side of the central United States is another time zone line that splits five states between the Central and Eastern time zones.

  • Florida: The majority of Florida's panhandle, including the city of Pensacola, is on Central time. The rest of the state is in the Eastern time zone.
  • Indiana: This state has two small pockets of Central time on the western side. In the north, Gary is on Central time because of its proximity to Chicago, while South Bend is on Eastern time. In the southwest, a slightly larger section of Indiana is in the Central zone.
  • Kentucky: Kentucky is cut almost in half by time zones. The western part of the state, including Bowling Green, is on Central while the eastern half, including Louisville and Lexington, is on Eastern time.
  • Michigan: The division between Central and Eastern time zones runs through the middle of Lake Michigan and curves west through Michigan's Upper Peninsula. While the entire Lower Peninsula follows Eastern time, the UP has a sliver of Central time along its border with Wisconsin.
  • Tennessee: Just like Kentucky, Tennessee is divided into two distinct time zones. The majority of the western half of the state, including Nashville, is on Central. The eastern half of the state, including Chattanooga, is on Eastern time.

Alaska

Alaska is the largest state in the country, so it only stands to reason that it is in two time zones. But did you know that Alaska actually has a time zone all its own? This, called the Alaska time zone, covers almost every piece of the state.

The exceptions in Alaska are the Aleutian Islands and St. Lawrence Island, which are in the Hawaii-Aleutian time zone.

Time in Michigan

Map of Michigan time zones. Counties in dark red follow Central Time while counties in yellow follow Eastern Time.

Michigan observes Eastern Time, except for four counties and two cities, which observe Central Time.

History[edit]

Before time zones were introduced, every place used local observation of the sun to set their clocks, which means they used local mean time, every city different based on their longitude. Detroit used 05:32:11 west of Greenwich and Menominee 05:50:27 west of Greenwich.

Time zones were introduced in the United States in 1883. They were introduced in different years based on local decisions. Michigan adopted Central Standard Time throughout the state effective September 18, 1885.[1][2][3] In 1915, Detroit changed to Eastern time, followed by most of the rest of the state in 1931.[4]

In 1967, when the Uniform Time Act came into effect, the Upper Peninsula went under year-round CST, with no daylight saving time.[5] In 1973, the majority of the peninsula switched to Eastern Time;[6] only the four western counties of Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee continue to observe Central Time.

Only At This One Spot In Texas Can You Stand In Two Timezones At Once

What are some other fun facts about Texas?

Being able to stand in two time zones at once is just one little tidbit of Texas trivia. Did you know that Dr. Pepper comes from Texas? The popular soft drink brand was invented in Waco. Texas has the second-largest canyon in the United States, the Palo Duro Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of Texas. Here’s another fun fact: Texas is home to the largest bat colony in the whole country. They use the Bracken Cave as their home, and they’re quite a sight to see flying out of the cave at dusk.

What are the best things about living in Texas?

Not many other states can say they have just two counties sitting in another time zone, which gives Texans a unique piece of bragging rights. That’s far from the only thing Texans can brag about, though. There’s a lot to love in Texas – literally, it’s the second-largest state! From border to border, there are nice people, picturesque small towns, lovely little cities, and awesome urban sprawls with great downtown scenes. Plus, you can’t beat the food, from Texas BBQ to a plethora of tasty fried foods. It doesn’t hurt that there is no income tax in Texas, either.

What other ghost towns in Texas can I visit?

Though Glenrio is certainly one of the most unique ghost towns you can visit in Texas, it’s not the only one. There are many abandoned – and sometimes a little creepy – towns across the Lone Star State. Medicine Mound, Texas is a tiny town that’s nothing but an abandoned general store, gas station, and long-since-emptied houses. What makes it special is that there are three special hills there that local tribes believed had healing powers. Catarina, Texas was once colorful and populated until the Great Depression hit and the wells ran dry. Today, only the crumbling buildings remain, being overtaken by nature.

Hassan Beydoun, Eastern Michigan set to clash with Central Michigan for Michigan MAC title

Eastern Michigan will be playing its regular-season finale Friday against Central Michigan at Kelly/Shorts Stadium with the teams playing for the Michigan Mid-American Conference championship.

It’s a big game for EMU, which last won the Michigan MAC title 10 years ago. The Eagles (7-4, 4-3) also is michigan on eastern or central time trying to win their eighth game of the season, which would be the most victories for the program since their MAC championship season in 1987.

EMU junior receiver Hassan Beydoun is thrilled to be along for the ride.

Beydoun arrived at EMU as a student after being passed over by Division 1, II and even III schools coming out of Dearborn High.

Beydoun wanted to attend EMU because his father attended the college, a reason he was an Eagles’ fan while growing up.

Now, Beydoun is a playmaker for the Eagles, second in the MAC in receptions (78) and fifth in receiving yards (863).

The Chippewas (7-4, 5-2) have some playmakers of their own, led by the nation’s leading rusher (1,516 yards) in Lew Nichols III, along with receiver Kalil Pimpleton (54 receptions, 891 yards), who returned punts 70 and 97 yards for touchdowns in CMU’s 42-30 win over Western Michigan on Citizens routing number. 3.

Nichols and Beydoun both had outstanding performances the last time the teams played when the Chippewas defeated EMU 31-23 last season. Nichols ran for 196 yards and two TDs and Beydoun had eight catches for 100 yards.

CMU last won the Michigan MAC title in 2017.

“It’s a big game with eight wins on the line and the MAC Michigan championship, especially since it’s rivalry week too,” Beydoun said. “Still, we don’t attack anything differently, just game plan prep like any other week.

&ldquo. I applied to Eastern as a regular student, so to actually be a part of a turnaround and doing stuff that a team hasn’t done in a long time is really humbling, especially since I’m contributing.”

Beydoun certainly has done that, helping the Eagles win, 52-49, at Toledo on Nov. 2 for the first time since 1999 when he had 12 receptions for 197 yards and two TDs while also getting 70 yards in three kickoff returns as well.

Beydoun talked about his journey to get on the field.

“Out of high school I had no offers, Division II, III nothing, no preferred walk-on, so I applied to Eastern, just 30 minutes away, just start my life and go to school,” Beydoun said. “I went to school my first semester, then my second semester in the winter time, and then I actually came across a tweet on my feed that said if any student at EMU wants to try out for the football team there’s a tryout on this date.

“I always watched football every single Saturday and I always believed I could play with those guys, so I felt what do I have to lose? I went to the tryout, tried out with 20 or so people and I was the only one to make the team. I went to the Bubble (EMU’s practice is michigan on eastern or central time, it was in January, like 6 in the morning, wore shorts and it was freezing. I asked them later on why they picked me, and they told me I did everything right, agility drills, everything.”

Beydoun was 140 pounds then, and now is 5-foot-8 citizens bank wire aba number 175 pounds.

“I wasn’t ready to play then, got in the weight room and practiced,” Beydoun said. “I traveled to every game my freshman year, just played on special teams, then the following year I contributed as a receiver.”

And, then Beydoun received a scholarship two years ago on Christmas day — the day before the Quick Lane Bowl.

“We had a Secret Santa between teammates and the guy who had me told me I was getting a Chipotle gift card,” Beydoun said. “He handed me the envelope, and because they gave a scholarship to a teammate, I was wondering why there was a camera in my face. When I opened up the envelope Is michigan on eastern or central time started laughing because they spelled my name wrong. My teammate was like ‘Dude, read the letter,’ and then when I found out I got a scholarship. I was so excited. It was like my story wasn’t complete, but it was complete at the moment because all the grinding out, you know working at the burger shop, Got Burger! during summer workouts. Then, you finally get the scholarship and you’re rewarded for everything.”

Beydoun had nine catches for 113 yards the following day in a 34-30 Quick Lane loss to Pittsburgh at Ford Field and has been an impact player since.

“I appreciate Coach (Chris) Creighton for giving me a chance, all the support from my family and teammates,” Beydoun said. “For me to make an impact, it’s all about preparation, understanding defenses and finding holes and just being a smart player.

“A term that we use in our room is QBF, which means quarterback friendly, whatever you can do to be a reliable option, find a way to get open. Whatever route you give me I’m going to go run it. If there’s www walmart money card customer service man in front of me I’m going to beat him.”

With all the coaching jobs available it’s almost certain Creighton’s name will be mentioned with his ability to make the Eagles relevant in his seven years of running the program, leading them to their first winning season bank of america credit card student review 20 years in 2016, finishing 7-6.

And, expect CMU third-year head coach Jim McElwain to also have his name in the mix for openings, guiding the Chippewas to the MAC championship game in 2019, then to a possible 6-2 MAC record if they win their home finale against the Eagles.

WMU closes out regular season at N. Illinois

WMU will play at MAC West champion Northern Illinois on Tuesday night.

The Broncos (6-5, 3-4) opened the season 4-1, including a win at No. 20 Pittsburgh, before stumbling the rest of the way in losing four of their final six to find themselves in the MAC West basement.

It was just five short years ago that P.J. Fleck led the Broncos to the MAC championship, entering the Cotton Bowl with a 13-0 record before a loss to Wisconsin which left them ranked No. 14.

Tim Lester replaced Fleck, who left for the head job at Minnesota, and has gone 30-25 (21-16 MAC) with his best record at 7-6 in 2018 and 2019. The Broncos could be playing for his job with a new athletic director coming soon after Kathy Beauregard announced her retirement as AD.

Northern Illinois has been the surprise of the MAC, predicted by MAC coaches to finish  last in the West.

Northern Illinois is 8-3 (6-1 MAC) and will play in the MAC title game Dec. 4 at Ford Field against the winner of the East division showdown between Miami (Ohio) and Kent State on Saturday.

When we change our clocks

Most of the United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on the second Is michigan on eastern or central time in March and reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at first national bank auburn nebraska different time.

In the European Union, Summer Time begins and ends at 1:00 a.m. Universal Time (Greenwich Mean Time). It begins the last Sunday in March and ends the last Sunday in October. In the EU, all time zones change at the same moment.

See more information about elsewhere in the world.

Spring forward, Fall back

During DST, clocks are turned forward an is my pokemon card worth money, effectively moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

Spelling and grammar

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Because of this, it would be more accurate to refer to DST as daylight-saving time. Similar examples would be a mind-expanding book or a man-eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, and Daylight Time Shifting more accurate, but neither is politically desirable.

When in the morning?

In the U.S., clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. In the EU, clocks change at 1:00 a.m. Universal Time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 12:59 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.

In the United States, Daylight Saving Time commences at 2:00 a.m. to minimize disruption. However, many states restrict bars from serving alcohol between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. At 2:00 a.m. in the fall, however, the time switches back one hour. So, can bars serve alcohol for that additional hour? Some states claim that bars actually stop serving liquor at 1:59 a.m., so they have already stopped serving when the time reverts to Standard Time. Other states solve the problem by saying that liquor can be served until "two hours after midnight." In practice, however, many establishments stay open an is michigan on eastern or central time hour in the fall.

In the U.S., 2:00 a.m. was originally chosen as the changeover time because it was practical and minimized disruption. Most people were at home and this was the time when the fewest trains were running. It is late enough to minimally affect bars and restaurants, and it prevents the day from switching to yesterday, which would be confusing. It is early enough that the entire continental U.S. switches is michigan on eastern or central time daybreak, and the changeover occurs before most early shift workers and early churchgoers are affected.

Some U.S. areas

For the U.S. and its territories, Daylight Saving Time is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and Arizona. The Navajo Nation participates in the Daylight Saving Time policy, even in Arizona, due to its large size and location in three states.

A safety reminder

Many fire departments encourage people to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they change their clocks because Daylight Saving Time provides a convenient reminder. "A working is michigan on eastern or central time detector more than doubles a person's chances of surviving a home fire," says William McNabb of the Troy Fire Department in Michigan. More than 90 percent of homes in the United States have smoke detectors, but one-third are estimated to have dead or missing batteries.
