Citi Launches New 5% Cash-Back Credit Card
On June 10, Citi launched a brand-new credit card to compete with the small contingent of cards that offer rotating bonus rewards categories. Like the Chase Freedom Flex and Discover it Cash Back, the new Citi Custom Cash Card offers 5% cash back on select categories, but the categories are slightly less arbitrary than those of its competitors.
Key Takeaways
- The Citi Custom Cash Card is the bank's answer to rotating cash-back credit cards that offer 5% cash back on select categories of the bank's choosing.
- Cardholders can enjoy a little more flexibility with the new Citi card over similar cards, but there are still limitations.
- Other benefits may make the card a decent alternative to the Freedom Flex and Discover it, depending on your spending habits.
How the Citi Custom Cash Card Works
The new Citi Custom Cash Card offers 5% cash back on up to $500 per month in purchases made in your top spending category from the following list:
- Restaurants
- Gas stations
- Grocery stores
- Select travel and transit
- Select streaming services
- Drugstores
- Home improvement stores
- Fitness clubs
- Live entertainment
Unlike the Freedom Flex and Discover it, the Custom Cash Card doesn't rotate bonus categories every few months, and it doesn't require you to activate your bonus every quarter. Instead, it offers its impressive cash-back rate based on how you spend your money, albeit with some limitations. All other purchases will net you just 1% back.
While it'd be difficult to spend $500 per month on some of the card's bonus categories—such as streaming services and fitness clubs—it may be easy to max out the bonus every month at grocery stores or restaurants, depending on how you spend your money.
While the card is technically billed as a cash-back credit card, you'll actually earn your rewards in the form of Citi ThankYou Points, which is similar to how the Chase Freedom cards work. This gives you more flexibility than if you were to earn simple cash back because the points can be of greater value if redeemed, for example, for travel.
The card also offers an introductory 0% APR for 15 months, after which the APR jumps to the card’s ongoing variable rate, which is based on your creditworthiness. New cardholders will also get $200 cash back—or 20,000 points—when they spend $750 in the first three months from account opening.
Should You Apply for the New Citi Card?
The new Citi Custom Cash Card is a solid alternative to the Chase Freedom Flex and Discover it Cash Back, especially for credit card users who prefer ThankYou Points. The $500 monthly spending limit may seem low, but it lines up with rotating cash-back credit cards, which limit bonus rewards to $1,500 spent per quarter.
Also, the $200 bonus is in line with some of the best cash-back credit cards that, like the Custom Cash Card, don't charge an annual fee.
If you plan to apply for the new card, consider pairing it with another card that offers a better base rewards rate. For example, you might use the Citi Custom Cash Card to max out its 5% category, while using the Citi Double Cash Card, which offers a flat 2% back on everything, for all of your other purchases. That will make it easier to maximize your rewards across the board.

Rewards rate
Besides being one of the best flat-rate cash back cards on the market with its desirable up to 2 percent cash back, the Citi Double Cash can help keep your spending habits in check with its earn-as-you-pay rewards structure.
In order to receive an additional 1 percent cash back rewards for your purchases (on top of the automatic 1 percent cash back you earn), you must pay off the balance you owe.
Earning cash back
The value you extract from the Citi Double Cash depends on how wisely you use it. In other words, make sure you’re paying at least the minimum due on time each month or, ideally, the full amount. You’ll only earn the full potential cash back if you pay off what you owe, and incurring interest can quickly eat through the rewards you earn.
There’s no cap on the amount of cash back rewards you can receive with the Citi Double Cash, so feel free to swipe and earn as you please.
Redeeming cash back
Redemption options for your cash back rewards include statement credits, direct deposit, check and ThankYou points.
Check, statement credit and direct deposit redemptions start at $25, meaning you must have at least $25 in cash back rewards in your account to redeem. Converting your rewards to ThankYou points requires a much lower $1 cash back rewards balance.
If you choose to redeem your rewards for points, a ThankYou account is automatically created for you. This allows you to further redeem your points for gift cards, travel through Citi or Shop with Points on Amazon or PayPal. Just keep in mind that these are considered “basic” ThankYou points and can’t be transferred to a Citi travel partner without a premium Citi travel card.
You can redeem rewards by logging into your online account or calling Citi at 1 (855) 473-4583. Cash back rewards expire after 12 months of card inactivity, meaning you haven’t earned cash back on purchases or payments for one year.
How much are rewards worth?
Generally, you can expect cash back to be worth 1 cent per percentage point back. In the case of the Citi Double Cash card, if you spend $500 a month with the card and pay off the full amount, you’ll earn $120 in cash back rewards by the end of12 months.
The Citi Double Cash isn’t marketed as a ThankYou point-earning Citi credit card, considering you earn cash back, not points. You can, though, easily convert your cash back to ThankYou points as a redemption option. However, The Points Guy discovered that ThankYou points earned from Citi’s no annual fee cards are considered “basic” and can’t be transferred to travel partner programs for a rate higher than Citi’s base 1 cent value. In order to transfer “basic” points, you can pool them with one of Citi’s premium travel cards, like the Citi Premier® Card, to reach The Points Guy’s latest valuation of up to 1.7 cents each.
Citi Double Cash: Details and benefits
The Citi Double Cash is pretty simplistic in terms of additional card benefits, but that doesn’t mean those the card does offer aren’t useful.
0 percent APR offer
In addition to being a cash back card, the Citi Double Cash also acts as a balance transfer credit card. The 18-month 0 percent introductory APR offer on balance transfers (13.99 percent to 23.99 percent variable APR after) is one of the longest balance transfer periods currently available. Keep in mind, if you take advantage of the offer, you’ll still pay either $5 or a 3 percent intro balance transfer fee, whichever is greater on transfers completed within the first four months. A balance transfer fee of 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum) applies if completed after four months of account opening.
For reference, if you had $2,000 in credit card debt and transferred it to the Citi Double Cash, you could pay just over $111 a month for 18 months and completely wipe out your debt—all without paying a dime in interest. Bear in mind, you’d also owe a $60 balance transfer fee.
Security and protection perks
In addition to a solid flat-rate rewards structure and lengthy introductory APR offer, the Citi Double Cash extends a myriad of security and fraud protections.
Get $0 fraud liability, 24-hour fraud protection, Citi Identity Theft Solutions and Lost Wallet Service—meaning Citi will replace your lost card within 24 hours and provide you with emergency cash in the meantime.

I've used this app for years and it's done me well but I got a new phone (iPhone SE) a couple weeks and the app is a pain now to use to the point of being totally useless. It no longer offers me the option for a Thumbprint sign in. And if I try to sign in manually via my saved password I get stuck in a loop because it won't fill in both the password and user login. At this point in order to access my account I've just memorized my complicated password. I input both that and my user manually (in the correct order or each time you fill in one the other will get deleted). I've tried restarting and making sure my app is up to date. I've compared the app on my new and old phone and on my old phone there is definitely the Thumbprint option both on the sign in page and under options in the security section. The app on my new phone doesn't show these options. And please, don't even think about using the stupid quick view or snap shot or whatever it's called, it will create even more trouble for you when you try to sign in. I'll update my review when the issue is fixed. When the app was working before it was my favorite cc app.
DO NOT get this! DO NOT!!!
We have two accounts and have been with CITI for over 12 years. Every month, we go online and pay both accounts through our separate payment account. Then tried to use this app. Could not link, so we called technical support. Finally got one account activated before leaving on trip. The following day, before departure, we tried to pay both accounts. By setting up the mobile app, both accounts became unlinked, as well as the payment information. After well over an hour online with a rep that could only read from a script (she did not listen to our problem), she said that the account was pending and to try back in 24-48 hrs and enter in the information again. How is that pending as we are redoing the process? So we leave and the day after we get home, we go through the process again. After even more hours on the phone with tech support, then customer service (I was steamed), only to be switched back the tech support (who tried to help but was unsuccessful), we were told that a ticket would be written and we could expect an email to resolve the issue. Every time we were talking with tech support, they could only walk us through the same steps. As a work around, we have had to establish two separate accounts AND now have them sending us two separate paper statements so that they could get paid. Waiting to see the email to see if this is resolved, otherwise, we are canceling our accounts.
Almost there
I love the app and how simple it is to navigate the features, including the free updates on your credit score. You can also live chat with someone during regular working hours, it’s great! My only reason for giving it a 4 out of 5 would be customer service and miscommunication. I had a fraud alert early August. They notified me quickly to go over the charges and so forth. They closed my account immediately and communicated that a replacement would be on its way. Not stating as to when it would arrive, but soon. It’s already been more than two weeks and this shopaholic is experiencing credit withdrawals. I am very much accustomed to a certain company that will fed ex your replacement within two days! I called and asked about the shipment , one month USPS. I’m over here like.... “You guys obviously don’t want me to spend?” What’s a girl gotta do to get this envelope?! Losing my patience and most definitely contemplating a switch. This con so far is outweighing the pros. On another note, they need to reconsider the quality of their Costco Citi Visa. The sides fringe after use. It looks like they plastered a sticker on their that might easily peel off.

Citi Double Cash Review: 2% on Everything Is Tough to Beat
The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer is a valuable workhorse among credit cards. With superior flat-rate cash back, it’s ideal for consumers who want low-hassle cash rewards on everything they charge. What it lacks in sizzle, it makes up for in daily dependability. It’s a Honda Accord in a credit card market that's lately gotten jammed with Lamborghini wannabes.
Most of what you need to know: The card gives you 2% cash back on every purchase — 1% when you make it, and another 1% back when you pay it off. Rewards are unlimited, and the annual fee is $0.
The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer stands up well on its own, but it also makes an ideal companion to a bonus-category credit card for those who use a two-card strategy to maximize cash back.
On the downside, it offers no sign-up bonus or ways to earn more than its base rewards rate.
Even so, to get good, reliable rewards with minimum effort (or cost), this card should be among the top few you consider.

Nerdy tip: The Citi Double Cash is a cash-back credit card, but it also allows you to convert your cash rewards to Citi ThankYou points at an effective 1:1 ratio. Redemption options for ThankYou points include travel, gift cards and more. See here for more information.

Benefits of the Citi® Double Cash Card
High rewards rate
The industry standard for cash back used to be 1%. As its name implies, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer essentially doubles that rate, paying 1% back on purchases and 1% after paying the bill. The sooner you pay your balance, the sooner you earn the second half of the rewards. That's a powerful incentive to pay your credit card bill in full every month, which we recommend you do anyway to avoid interest.
While we still think this is a fine card, it’s not quite the industry unicorn it used to be. Other cards also offer 2% cash back or more on purchases.
Nerdy tip: When you redeem cash back for a credit on your statement, you don’t earn the second 1%. That’s because you’re not actually paying off that amount; it’s just subtracted from your bill. But that’s a minor consideration. Redeeming a hefty $1,000 per year would mean forgoing $10 in rewards for the convenience of taking the money in the form of a statement credit. That’s still very close to a 2% return on spending, assuming you pay your bill in full every month.

Simplicity
Many cash-back cards offer bonus categories — some of them permanent, some that change every month. They allow you to earn extra rewards in featured spending categories, such as gas stations, restaurants and home improvement stores. They can be a hassle to keep track of. Some limit the amount of spending eligible for bonus rewards, and all spending over that limit earns a mundane 1% cash back.
With the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, you can be a lazy optimizer and whip out the same card all the time, without thinking about where you’re using the card and whether you’ve reached the limit for a bonus spending category.
Flexibility
The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer features the flexibility to earn cash back, or convert your rewards to ThankYou points.
ThankYou points can be valuable, especially for travelers. But the ThankYou rewards program is not as straightforward as others and requires a little know-how to navigate in order to get the best value. Cash back earned from the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer converts to ThankYou points at a 1:1 ratio, at a penny per point. This means you could turn $100 in cash rewards into 10,000 ThankYou points. Then, you could redeem points for travel, gift cards, purchases at eligible retailers and other options.
Depending on your credit card strategy and travel goals, this conversion flexibility can potentially increase the value of your rewards.
If you hold only the Citi Double Cash, you'll only have the ability to transfer ThankYou points to JetBlue Airways. But if you also have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, you could combine points and transfer them to any of Citi’s multiple airline partners.

Drawbacks to consider
No sign-up bonus
A sign-up bonus can be a big part of a card's value in the short term, like the first few years. That’s why you might consider a different card that offers a bonus for new cardholders.
The most direct competitor is the Wells Fargo Active Cash℠ Card.
This card also earns 2% cash back in rewards, but it has a sign-up bonus: New! Earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months. It also has an intro 0% APR offer with an annual fee of $0.
» MORE:Wells Fargo Active Cash vs. Citi Double Cash
No bonus categories
Double cash on all purchases is great, but it’s less than you’ll find on cards that offer elevated rewards on spending at certain places, like restaurants, supermarkets or gas stations.
Indeed, some cards offer 5% back on bonus categories that change quarterly. In the past, categories have included gas stations, restaurants, supermarkets, Amazon.com and PayPal. Good examples are the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and the Discover it® Cash Back. Both offer 5% back on categories that you activate, on up to $1,500 in spending per quarter (equal to $75 in cash back), and 1% on all other spending.
Other cash-back cards have bonus categories that don't change. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a good example. The card offers 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 a year in spending (then 1%); 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores; and 1% cash back everywhere else. Terms apply (To view rates and fees of the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, see this page.). It has an annual fee of $0.
Nerdy tip: For optimizers, the decision is not either-or, but both. Boost cash rewards by using a bonus-categories card to get higher earnings on certain purchases, and use the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer for everything else. That reaps a superior return with a little more effort.
And some cards offer a combination: a good flat rate on most purchases, a sign-up bonus and bonus categories. Example: The Chase Freedom Unlimited®.
Flat rate: 1.5%
Bonus category rewards: 3% cash back on dining at restaurants and drugstore purchases and 5% on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
Sign-up bonus:Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. And earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.

No intro APR on purchases
The intro APR offer for this card is: 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99%-23.99% Variable APR.
Noticeably absent is an intro APR rate on purchases. Why is that important? After you transfer a balance to this card, future purchases you charge to it will begin accruing interest immediately. You won’t have a grace period, even if you pay off your new purchases in full. You only get the grace period back if you also completely pay off the balance transfer amount. That’s why many other cards feature an intro APR offer, often for the same number of months, for both balance transfers and purchases.
» MORE:NerdWallet's best 0% intro APR cards
Balance transfer fee
The lengthy no-interest period on balance transfers is competitive, and the introductory 3% balance transfer fee with a minimum of $5 is typical. But the fee still hurts. That amounts to a $300 fee on $10,000 transferred. And after the first four months, the balance transfer fee is 5% or $5, whichever is greater.
Foreign transaction fee
Its 3% fee for foreign transactions means this is a poor choice of card to use abroad. To be fair, this fee is more common on cash-back cards, but rarer on travel cards.

Reward expiration
Citi says cash rewards balances “expire” if you don’t earn cash back from purchases or payments for 12 months. If you quit using the card, be sure to first redeem eligible rewards — or make a minor purchase with the card at least once a year to reset the clock on expiration.
Is it right for you?
If you want a low-hassle, flat-rate rewards card, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer fits the bill because its rewards apply to all spending and have no limit. Your return rate can be even better if you use it in conjunction with a bonus-categories card.

Citi Launches New 5% Cash-Back Credit Card
On Citi cashreturns mastercard login 10, Citi launched a brand-new credit card to compete with the small contingent of cards that offer rotating bonus rewards categories. Like the Chase Freedom Flex and Discover it Cash Back, the new Citi Custom Cash Card offers 5% cash back on select categories, but the categories are slightly less arbitrary than those of its competitors.
Key Takeaways
- The Citi Custom Cash Card is the bank's answer to rotating cash-back credit cards that offer 5% cash back on select citi cashreturns mastercard login of the bank's choosing.
While it'd spectrum pay my bill by phone difficult to spend $500 per month on some of the card's bonus categories—such as streaming services and fitness clubs—it may be easy to max out the bonus every month at grocery stores or restaurants, depending on how you spend your money.

Most of what you need to know: Citi cashreturns mastercard login card gives you 2% cash back on every purchase — 1% when you make it, and another 1% back when you pay it off. Rewards are unlimited, and the annual fee is $0.
The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer stands up well on its own, but it also makes an ideal companion to a bonus-category credit card for those who use a two-card strategy to maximize cash back.
On the downside, it offers no sign-up bonus or ways to earn more than its purina one large breed puppy feeding chart rewards rate.
Even so, to get good, reliable rewards with minimum effort (or cost), this card should be among the top few you consider.

Flexibility
The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer features the flexibility to earn cash back, or convert your rewards to Credit one platinum pre approved points.

Since you're already paying an annual membership fee to be a Costco member, you instantly gain the ability to apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. With a $0 annual fee, Costco shoppers will be able to enjoy even greater returns on their already-low-priced merchandise.
Earn with a lucrative rewards rate
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi comes with a remarkable rewards rate: 4% cash back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter, 3% on restaurants & travel, 2% at Costco & Costco.com, 1% on all other purchases.
In the categories where it earns more than 1%, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi produces far better returns than many other credit cards. The 4% rewards rate on gas alone makes this card one of the best credit cards for gas purchases. The 3% rewards rate on travel outperforms some of the top travel credit cards — although you're not earning miles, giving you fewer opportunities to maximize your rewards.
We've compared the estimated annual savings based on an average household budget between the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, which lets you Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases.
Gas: $3,000 | $120 | $60 |
Dining: $2,625 | $79 | $53 |
Groceries: $3,977 | $80 | $80 |
General: $664 | $7 | $13 |
TOTAL: | $286 | $206 |
By our estimates, the average shopper will come out $80 ahead on their everyday purchases with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, compared to the Citi® Double Cash Card . In general, you'll earn more cash back on gas, dining and grocery purchases with this card than with most other cards.
No sign-up bonus
One small drawback to note about the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is the lack of a sign-up bonus. While this won't matter in the long run, welcome bonuses attract many consumers to reward credit cards — boosting the short-term value tremendously. For example, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ lets you Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. And earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.
Redeem your Costco Cash Rewards for cash or Costco purchases
Another major downside of the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is that it restricts reward redemption to just once per year. All the cash back you earn is provided in the form of an annual certificate in February, and you have until Dec. 31 of each year to complete the redemption before your certificate expires.
Worse yet, if your account gets canceled, all the rewards will be gone. You won't have a chance to cash them out.
If you decide to close your account, the rewards will be forfeited and not mailed to you. However, despite this hurdle in redemption, we believe that the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is still highly valuable for frequent Costco shoppers.
Cover your items with purchase protection
An underrated perk of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi are its purchase protection benefits. If your item is damaged or stolen within 120 days of purchase (90 days for New York residents), you can submit a claim with Citi to cover the cost of repair or a refund. This benefit applies to all purchases — not just at Costco.
Enjoy Citi exclusive benefits
One of the added benefits is access to Citi Entertainment, a feature that comes with most Citi cards. Citi Entertainment offers exclusive access to thousands of events, including presale tickets to concerts and sporting events and special dining experiences in.
Is it worth signing up for a Costco membership just for the credit card?
If the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi appeals to you, but you aren't a member of the wholesale store, it may be worthwhile to sign up to get the card. The most basic Costco membership costs $60 per year, providing you with unlimited shopping privileges at Costco locations and Costco.com. If we treat that as the credit card's annual fee, the issue boils down to whether this card will get you enough cashback rewards to still come out ahead. If you spend $2,000 on restaurants and dining alone, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi will earn you rewards that will compensate for the basic membership fee.
But you'll need to be certain that you won't charge more to the card than you can afford each month. The card's standard APR is 15.24% (Variable) and applies to balance transfers. If you don't pay your statement in full, the savings you enjoy from this card could end up being meaningless.
How does the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi compare against other credit cards?
If you're seeking flexibility on receiving and redeeming cash back, there are many other highly rewarding cashback cards. Below we compare how the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi performs against other top cashback credit cards.
Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠
The Chase Freedom Flex℠ is a great new cashback credit card from Chase. The card lets you Earn 5% cash back on eligible purchases in rotating categories, 5% on Chase travel purchased through Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases. Gas stations and grocery stores are typically included in Chase's rotating categories throughout the year, though this card's 5% quarterly bonus category is limited to $1,500 in purchases per quarter. Ultimate Rewards points are credited to your account each month.
One major drawback for Costco shoppers: the Chase Freedom Flex℠ is a Mastercard, which currently isn't accepted at Costco stores (though you can use it for purchases online). However, you're best off using it for its 5% categories, which generally won't apply to Costco.
As mentioned above, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ comes with an easy-to-earn sign-up bonus: Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. And earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. We like that you can accumulate and redeem rewards on this card in a variety of ways.
This card comes with purchase protection against damage or theft and extended warranty protection. But for consumers looking to optimize their rewards, our recommendation is to get both cards. Use the Chase Freedom Flex℠ whenever you can get 5% cash back on rotating categories and 3% on drugstores, and the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi in all other circumstances.
Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi vs. Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer
The Citi® Double Cash Card is a prime example of a fixed-rate cashback card. Those who use it will Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. The purchasing power of the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer comes through on categories beyond gas, restaurants and travel. If you significantly spend outside of these categories — such as on entertainment or retail purchases — the Citi® Double Cash Card is the better option.
Like the Chase Freedom Flex℠, the Citi® Double Cash Card is Mastercard and so won't work within Costco stores. However, you might consider using it as your go-to card for purchases that don't fall under the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi's categories. Since neither card comes with an annual fee, you always have the option of signing up for both cards and using the card that offers a better rate on a particular purchase.
Like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, there's no sign-up bonus with the Citi® Double Cash Card . However, for long-term cardholders, the card's rewards could exceed the value of a card with a sign-up bonus.
Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi vs. Discover it® Cash Back Card
Similar to the Chase Freedom Flex℠, the Discover it® Cash Back Card offers 5% cash back at different places each quarter up to the quarterly maximum when you activate, 1% unlimited cash back on all other purchases - automatically. And, like the Chase Freedom Flex℠, this bonus is limited to $1,500 in purchases per quarter (all other purchases get 1% cash back).
Some consumers may prefer the Discover it® Cash Back Card over the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, as it typically includes wholesale clubs in Q2. Other categories that may be enticing include grocery stores, gas stations and Amazon.com. You can also redeem your rewards each month, rather than waiting on a certificate to be mailed out at the end of the year.
Another reason to consider the Discover it® Cash Back Card over the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is the introductory offer: Unlimited Cashback Match – only from Discover. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year! There’s no minimum spending or maximum rewards. You could turn $150 cash back into $300. If you're a high spender, this could significantly boost your short-term savings.
Like the other cards above, you won't be able to use the Discover it® Cash Back Card for in-store purchases at Costco. However, you can use it everywhere else to earn a large amount of cash back through the Cashback Match in your first year.
ValuePenguin's verdict
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi offers some of the highest returns for life's most common purchase categories. Although there's a $0 annual fee, this card is only reserved for Costco members. If you've been thinking about purchasing a Costco membership, then the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi could help you maximize your savings each year.
