FAQs
What Is Citi?
Citi (or technically, Citibank) is the fourth largest commercial bank in the U.S. It also issues more than a dozen credit cards, some under the Citi brand and others through co-branded partnerships with merchants like Costco and American Airlines.
Citi is known for its cash back and long promotional APR card offers, but the bank also issues several travel rewards and business cards. You’ll need at least good credit to qualify for most Citi credit cards. However, if you’re new to credit, or rebuilding it, Citi does have secured and student credit card options.
Note
A good FICO credit score is defined as 670 or above.
How Do Citi ThankYou Rewards Work?
Citi ThankYou Rewards is the bank-branded program for several Citi credit cards: Citi Rewards+ Card, Citi Premier Card, and the Citi Prestige Card.
When you use one of those cards, you’ll earn a set number of points per dollar spent. The earning rate will depend on the card, but you’ll earn at least 1 point per dollar spent, and more on spending in categories that may include groceries, gas, or travel purchases.
Citi ThankYou points are typically worth about 1.21 cents each, based on average valuations from The Balance, and can be redeemed for:
- Travel purchases like flights, rental car, and hotel reservations
- Gift cards
- Cash back
- Shop or pay with points at participating online retailers, like Amazon and Best Buy
- Online bill payments
- Charity donations
ThankYou points can be transferred to partner loyalty programs, such as Jet Blue’s TrueBlue program, and the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.
How Good Is Citi Customer Service?
Citibank customer service is just OK, according to J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study. The bank ranked sixth among 11 major card issuers, scoring 801 on a 1,000-point scale, below the industry average score of 810.
However, as a Citi cardholder, you will have some useful service benefits, such as free access to your FICO score online and via the Citi mobile app, a 24/7 customer service phone line, and a secure, online portal where you can chat with a customer service representative.
Methodology
We collect data on hundreds of cards and score more than 55 features that affect your finances. We do this because it's our mission to give you unbiased, comprehensive credit card reviews.
Our reviews are always impartial: No one can influence which cards we review, the way we present them to you, or the ratings they receive.
About This List
The Balance team created this best card list using the same evaluation process used to score our best overall card rankings, but focused solely on cards issued by Citi (though we excluded co-branded airline cards from this round-up). We re-evaluate this list on a monthly basis, or when there are major changes to Citi's credit card offerings.
What We Score
We consider low APRs, big sign-up offers, valuable rewards, and minimal fees some of the best card qualities, and our scoring model reflects this. Our full methodology includes further detail about how we evaluate credit card attributes.

All our credit cards come with these great benefits

Choice (credit card)

Choice was a credit cardtest marketed by Citibank in the United States, announced in 1977, and first issued in 1978. It was one of the first cards to offer a cash refund program, and no annual fee. Choice was intended to create a rival to Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, but proved unsuccessful, and was withdrawn in 1987. Citibank has continued to use the "Choice" name on some of its Visa and MasterCard cards.
The card was introduced in 1977, when Citibank bought NAC, a regional credit card based in Baltimore, renaming it Choice. A subsequent campaign in Maryland in 1980 turned the card into a regional success, earning more than one million cardholders in the Baltimore and Washington, DC, area. [1] With a view to nationwide expansion, the test market was expanded to include Colorado.
Despite the success of Sears' Discover Card, which offered many of the same features as Choice when it was introduced in 1985 (such as a rebate on purchases and no annual fee), Citibank decided Choice could not compete with Visa and MasterCard in the longer term, and the card was reissued as a Visa at the end of 1987, aimed at entry level customers and those with poor credit.[2]
It was also said that Citibank's owner, Citicorp, was not willing to accept the eventual estimated costs of establishing another national credit card, after Sears had spent an estimated USD$80 million creating its Discover Card.[3] Its fate was similar to that of Citibank's first credit card, the "First National City Charge Service" (or "The Everything Card"), introduced on the East Coast in 1967 to compete with BankAmericard (today's Visa) but which became part of Master Charge (now MasterCard) in 1969.[4]

A list of the best current credit card sign up bonuses & offers for November, 2021. We update this page on a daily basis with any new deals and include all bonuses (we don’t use any credit card affiliate links so we can remain unbiased unlike other sites).
Given how popular our best bank account bonus page is, I thought I’d try my hand at something similar for credit card bonuses. This page will be updated regularly, so feel free to bookmark it and share it on social media/forums (I’ll also add it to the header under credit cards to make it easily accessible). Keep in mind we do not use credit card affiliate links, so this is an unbiased list.
A few final thoughts before we get to this list:
- There will be a random amount of entries on this list at any one time dependent on how many cards I currently think are worth signing up for.
- I’ll be taking into account whether a bonus is at it’s highest level ever or not (mostly because I don’t think an offer is truly the best if it regularly goes up to a higher level or I suspect it’ll go to a higher level in the near future).
- I won’t be taking into account special application rules (e.g Chase 5/24 rule or American Express once per lifetime rule), but I will mention them clearly on the individual review pages.
- If there is a card that is popular and I haven’t included, I’ll put it under “Not On The List” and explain my reasons why.
Keep in mind that having a clear goal will help you decide what the best cards for you are! If you don’t want to travel and just want to earn cash back, then the best card for you will be different than somebody that wants to fly first class to Paris and stay in 5 star accommodation.

Citi credit cards are known for simple cash back, unique rewards and lengthy balance transfer periods. When the Citi® Double Cash Card launched in 2014, it started the trend of easy-to-use cash-back cards with the same lucrative rewards rate on all purchases. And six years later, the Citi Double Cash Card remains one of the best cash-back cards.
Beyond generous rewards, some Citi cards are known for long balance transfer periods that allow you to pay off debt without interest for up to 15, 18 or 21 months. Plus Citi issues the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, which is the warehouse club's signature card.
While a handful of Citi cards have annual fees that can be between $95 and $495, most have none, in addition to money-saving benefits, such as no late fees or a one-time late fee waiver and $0 liability on unauthorized charges.
Below, Select breaks down the best Citi credit cards in six categories, so you can choose the best card for your needs.

Learn MoreAuthorized Transactions are those that still need to be settled by a retailer or service provider. Most transactions stay authorized for 3-5 days. When a retailer or service provider finishes the work on their end, the transaction will move to Posted Transactions. Posted Transactions are 100% complete. We’ve paid the retailer or service provider and charged the transaction to your credit card. Sometimes you’ll see an Authorized Transaction that doesn’t match the final amount of your purchase. Don’t worry. Some businesses (like gas stations and hotels) ask us to pre-authorize an amount before you’ve finished your purchase. Once we settle the charge, you’ll see the actual amount you spent in your Posted Transactions. If you do see an item in your Posted Transactions that isn’t what you expected, contact us at 1-800-769-2512. We’ll be happy to go through it with you.

The bank ranked sixth among 11 major card issuers, scoring 801 on a 1,000-point 1st may public holiday in south africa, below the industry average score of 810.
