Gareth Southgate signs England contract extension to Euro 2024
Gareth Southgate says the decision to extend his England contract was driven by the dream of clearing one last hurdle to success at a major tournament, ensuring he sees his team realise their rich potential.
The two-year extension means Southgate will remain manager until December 2024, taking in that year’s European Championship after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Although he could potentially double his previous salary of £3m, the terms are performance-based and any increases would be funded partly by tournament prize money.
Assuming he remains in place at the contract’s conclusion Southgate will have occupied the position for more than eight years, making him England’s longest-serving manager since Bobby Robson. Only Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey would have spent more time in the job.
Under Southgate’s guidance England have progressed from being a side, when he initially took over as caretaker in September 2016, that had just crashed out of Euro 2016 against Iceland to one that has reached a semi-final and a final in its past two major tournaments. He explained the lure of going one step further made it hard to consider leaving.
“In football, when you’ve got a team who are a good team, when you’ve done a lot of the work culturally to get them to where you want to be and you’ve got them to a point where they can challenge, then you want to bring that to fruition,” he said.
“You want to have a go. We’ve only ever won one World Cup and we still have the belief that that’s possible. It’s an aim we should have as a team and to step away at a moment where we still think the next few years can be very exciting, that would have been difficult to live with.
“We’re allowed to dream and we’ve set ourselves high challenges. Did we think three years ago at this point we’d be sitting here on the back of a semi-final and final? Well, we could have all hoped but it might not have been a realistic dream.”
England have won 15 of their 19 matches in 2021 and Southgate, whose assistant Steve Holland has also signed a new contract, suggested similarly relentless form would put them there or thereabouts.
“We’re in tournaments where the margins are so fine but the levels of performance and consistency with the team, particularly this calendar year, have been exceptional,” he said.
“That’s what we have to continue. We have to be a machine that keeps delivering those performances.”
Last year the Football Association announced plans to prepare for a £300m loss over a four-year period to 2024, making 124 positions redundant as the Covid-19 pandemic bit. Mark Bullingham, the FA’s chief executive, said the performance‑related element made Southgate’s new contract affordable and that increases in commercial revenue will also contribute to any pay rise.
While Southgate is aiming for on‑pitch success in Qatar there have been questions about how England’s setup will respond to the human rights concerns that dog the tournament, with decisions over any public stand yet to be taken. He reiterated he is continuing to “educate myself” about the situation but said recent unsavoury episodes have sharpened his players’ awareness of wider problems.
“We went to Montenegro, we went to Bulgaria as a team and suffered from the racism in the stadiums and it was very clear that it was affecting our team, it was affecting the lives of our players,” he said. “It meant that we became much more aware of dealing with those issues as a collective and individually.”
As a member of Uefa’s working group on workers’ rights, Bullingham travelled to Qatar in August to meet migrant workers and charities. He believes that, while next year’s host country has made progress in passing new laws to protect workers, implementation is still lacking. “What is very clear … is that the legislation isn’t being applied universally, and that has to be the next step, and that’s where we see the real progress will come through.”
Mayor Scott Renews Efforts To Find Stable Employment For Squeegee Workers, Launches 90-Day Community Engagement Plan
BALTIMORE (WJZ) –Twenty-six-year-old Sieed has been a squeegee worker in Baltimore for three years but wants something more.
“I need to get off of the squeegee corner,” he said Tuesday.
READ MORE: Will Holiday Gatherings Impact COVID-19 Metrics? The father of two said he uses the money from squeegeeing to buy food and pay bills for his family. “I have two beautiful kids that I try to take care of,” he said but added that this line of work doesn’t have things he wants and needs like a 401-k.
It’s why Sieed and other squeegee workers are excited for a new opportunity announced Tuesday by Mayor Brandon Scott. A new 90-day action plan helping workers like him by placing them in steady jobs.
“Providing them the support that they need,” said Mayor Scott.
Deputy Mayor, Faith Leach, said the plan involves the city’s outreach team engaging with young people working on street corners, “connecting them with resources and to employment.”
The plan will give 10 squeegee workers a job at Canopy by Hilton Hotel in Baltimore’s Harbor Point.
They’ll have the chance to try their hand at being a bellhop or working in the hotel’s restaurant. But not everyone wants to stay off the streets.

As a twenty-year-old, it’s enough for Carlos to support himself and his music career. “I’m not trying to work for nobody else,” he added.
Squeegeeing has been a point of contention in Baltimore. Last year, a viral video showed a squeegee worker punching a driver and earlier this month, another video showed a squeegee worker helping a woman from a car crash.
“They are resilient, they are passionate and they hold so much promise,” said Leech of the squeegee workers. “They are all the things we all love about Baltimore.”
But city officials believe this way of work should come to an end.
‘Youth squeegeeing is a visible representation of broken systems,” added Leech at a press conference Tuesday.
But Carlos says he isn’t going anywhere. “We’re gonna keep hustling, we’re not robbing nobody, it’s an honest hustle so we’re gonna keep doing this,” he said.

Gareth Southgate ‘good enough for Manchester United’ as England manager outlines Premier League plan – but Darren Bent wouldn’t take him at Arsenal
A debate about the club credentials of England manager Gareth Southgate has been ignited on talkSPORT, with the Manchester United job up for grabs.
The Three Lions boss just signed a new deal with the FA, keeping him in the role until 2024 after five promising years at the helm.

Southgate has guided England to a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final, although that first trophy success since 1966 remains elusive.
But, perhaps better yet, the 51-year-old has changed the entire narrative around the national team, creating a positive feeling among both players and fans.
Upon committing his short-term future to England, the former Middlesbrough manager revealed his intention to prove himself at club level one day.
“Because people view my club management purely through the eyes of a relegation, there is the part of you that wants to prove them wrong,” Southgate said.
“There will be a day when I do that, I’m sure.”
Southgate is well and truly out of the running for the vacant Manchester United job following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but talkSPORT host Adrian Durham questions why the England boss wasn’t being talked up for the role.

“They’re dead set on [Mauricio] Pochettino,” Durham said. “He hasn’t won anything and didn’t even win the title with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
“He needs Messi to come in and pull clear in France. They’re absolutely fine with getting Pochettino in, why wouldn’t they be fine with Southgate?
“It makes no sense to me whatsoever. Has he not proven himself as a man manager?
“He didn’t actually lose the Euros final, it went to penalties. Has he not done enough already, turning England around in five years, to make people think he’s got a lot about him?
“Think about how he is away from the football pitch as well. Why wouldn’t you want someone that honourable and that sincere as manager of your football club?”

However, former Premier League striker and Arsenal fan Darren Bent insists he wouldn’t take Southgate at The Emirates.
Fellow Gooner Laura Woods suggested that although it might be snobbery, a ‘big six’ job feels like too big a leap from the England position.
And Bent agreed. He said: “For whatever reason, he seems to suit international management better than club management.
“If one of the top four jobs became available, I don’t think he’d be in the running for that.
“On a day-to-day basis, could he manage those elite players? It’s all well and good when they come together for ten days.
“But I think I agree with you, Laura, him coming to Arsenal? I’d be a bit like, ‘Hmm’.”

Los Angeles city councilmembers voted this week to move forward with a final redistricting map for the Los Angeles Unified School Board, city of south gate jobs of a meeting next Wednesday where the council is expected to approve an ordinance to formally adopt the map.
The 12-0 vote came at the end of a Tuesday, Nov. 23, public hearing about LAUSD’s redistricting map, the second such hearing this month by the City Council. There was no discussion by council members before the vote, despite pleas by some members of the public who urged elected officials to go back to the drawing board.
In recent weeks, San Fernando Valley residents in Encino, Reseda and Woodland Hills have voiced objections to having their communities split between two school board districts, while residents in Southeast L.A. have complained that the map under consideration is gerrymandered and works against them from being able to elect someone from their community to represent them.
Jamie York, secretary of the Reseda Neighborhood Council who was speaking for herself, said during the Nov. 10 hearing that it did not make sense to place some students from the San Fernando Valley in District 4, which also represents residents in L.A.’s west side, including such communities as Bel-Air and the Pacific Palisades. The communities in the valley and ones in West L.A. are divided by the Santa Monica Mountains.
Rather, residents in Encino, Reseda and Woodland Hills insist they should be grouped entirely in District 3 with the rest of the West Valley. District 4 is currently represented by board Vice President Nick Melvoin while board member Scott Schmerelson represents District 3.
York said that in speaking with Woodland Hills residents who have had their community divided between the two districts before, the conclusion was that it did not benefit students.
“What ends up happening is that the kids in the valley that are part of District 4 end up basically getting ignored,” York said. “It’s not useful and it’s not good for kids.”
Over in District 5, residents from Southeast L.A. such as Huntington Park, Maywood and South Gate said the proposed map would continue to disenfranchise voters in their communities who, for the past decade, have been lumped into the same district as folks in Northeast L.A., with whom they have little in common.
And because there is higher voter turnout from the Northeast, residents in the Southeast said they’re unable to elect a candidate from their community to make sure their voices are heard.
“The map that’s being proposed isn’t equitable and isn’t fair, and it very clearly gerrymanders our communities with communities that are not like us at all, a city of south gate jobs drive away from where we live,” said Southeast L.A. resident Cynthia Gonzalez.
“My daughter, who’s a junior in high school, has never had anyone from her community represent her on the board, and my 9-year-old daughter — if you adopt this map — will never have that either,” she added.
District 5 city of south gate jobs currently represented by board member Jackie Goldberg, who lives in Northeast L.A.
City officials representing the southeastern communities of Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon recently sent a joint letter to L.A. councilmembers, which was shared with the LA Daily News, imploring them not to adopt a gerrymandered map. Because they are separate cities with their own councils, these communities do not have an elected city of south gate jobs representing them on the L.A. City Council.
“It is unjust that the Southeast Communities do not have a voice in the redistricting process even though LAUSD goes beyond the City of Los Angeles and into the Southeast Cities for which we represent,” they wrote. “Instead, we must rely on the City of Los Angeles to make the right decision for our constituents. Therefore, as elected officials we ask you in good faith to make the right decision and make Board District 5 equitable.”
