This index, which is adjusted for each company’s size and market share, has a baseline of 1.00; if a company earns a 1.00 complaint index, this means that the company received just as many consumer complaints in a year as was expected for their size.

In 2020, American United Life received an overall NAIC complaint index of 0.06, which represents only six total complaints for the year. The company’s complaint index in 2019 was 0.03 and in 2018, it was just 0.02.

This retirement company is the worst retirement company I’ve ever experienced. Apparently the customer service department oneamerica financial partners scared to talk to the dispersement team and refuses to escalate issues. We have had to call every day for the past 2 weeks and still have no resolution. I don’t know how this company stays in business when they can’t even handle routine requests. 15 things you (probably) didn't know about OneAmerica

It’s a punny sign.

It’s a Downtown office tower.

It’s the title sponsor of the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.

It’s … um, well, a … what the heck is OneAmerica?

Here’s the quick answer: It’s a multibillion-dollar financial services company with deep roots in Indianapolis — and a bit of an identity problem despite broad name recognition.

As the company prepares to mark 140 years in Indiana later this year, OneAmerica is rolling out a new campaign in July to better define its mission. The theme is “140 Years Strong: Getting Better With Age.”

The phrase is intended to reference both the company and its corporate and individual clients, who turn to OneAmerica for a variety of employment benefit programs, life insurance and retirement products, including annuities, and long-term care plans.

“We’re not just 140 years old. We’re 140 years strong,” said Scott Davison, OneAmerica president, CEO and chairman.

“Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll commemorate OneAmerica’s history while also looking to the future. We have a lot to celebrate: our assets under administration recently doubled; our asset-based long-term care products are in demand; and our smart, savvy workforce is transforming the way we operate and keeping us competitive.”

The company’s 2016 annual report provides more insights into the business. It says OneAmerica's investment portfolio has outperformed the industry for the past 30 years, with $74 billion in assets under management. That pool has been bolstered by an average annual growth rate of 20 percent over the past five years.

Last year, the company also paid out $5.9 billion.

But numbers, alone, are pretty dry and leave many questions unanswered.

So here are 15 things — from the company's archives — that you need to know to “really know” about OneAmerica:

1. The company got its start in 1877 providing death benefits to members of The Knights of Pythias, the first fraternal organization chartered by Congress.

2. Completed in 1907, the Indiana Pythian Building, also known as the "flatiron" because of to its shape, located at Pennsylvania Street and Massachusetts Avenue, served as the first Downtown headquarters.

3. The company wrote two life insurance policies for a combined $15,000 in 1917 for a 33-year-old Harry S. Truman.

4. In 1924, then known as American Central, the company wrote large policies for prominent athletes such as boxer Jack Dempsey and Cincinnati Reds hall-of-famer Eddie Roush.

5. American Central broke ground in 1930 for a new headquarters on Fall Creek Parkway, the current site of Ivy Tech Community College.

6. In 1936, American Central and United Mutual merged to become American United Life.

7. The company’s signboard tradition dates back to 1958 and the Fall Creek headquarters. The sign initially provided an apology for construction, company statistics and holiday wishes. It was under Clarence Jackson, AUL president from 1952 to 1961, that the messages transitioned to a regular rotation of puns, witty comments and groaners such as “Swiss and Gouda screamed when they saw the Muenster.”

8. In December 1979, construction began on the tower that helped alter the city’s skyline. It was, at the time, the tallest building in Indiana at 533 feet. Paid for in cash, the tower featured 9,000 slabs of Indiana limestone. Former Mayor William Hudnut called the project the catalyst for the rebirth of the Downtown.

9. The company occupied eight of the tower’s 36 floors in 1982, and now occupies more than one-third of the floors.

10. In 2000, the company converted to a mutual insurance holding company after lobbying for a change in Indiana law. OneAmerica Financial Partners was formed, with AUL, State Life and Pioneer as subsidiaries.

11. In 2002, the OneAmerica name and flag logo were added to the northwest side of the tower, just under the rooftop. At the time, the company made a conscious decision to not reference insurance because about two-thirds of its assets involved retirement plans and a growing employee benefits (group life and disability) division.

12. The flag theme from the logo carries over to the tower, where an 80-foot pole hoists what the company touts as the highest-flying American flag in Indiana. The tower also flies other flags occasionally, including those of five of the city’s professional sports teams on the days of home games, and a checkered flag during Indy 500 race week.

13. OneAmerica not only impacts the sky over the city, but the ground as well. Energy efficient for a high-rise of its age, the tower uses an underground water system to heat and cool the office spaces. After the water is run through the heat exchange system, it flows into the Downtown Canal.

14. Since 2000, OneAmerica and the OneAmerica Foundation have contributed more than $25 million into education, arts and other community programs, from WFYI and the United Way of Central Indiana (with employees volunteering during an annual Week of Caring) to The Children’s Museum and Indiana Black Expo.

15. Over the past three years, the workforce has grown by 40 percent to more than 1,900 people, including 1,400 in Indianapolis.

OneAmerica will mark its 140th anniversary in November, culminating events that will start in July.
