Amazon workers in Alabama will get another shot to unionise

A new union election for Amazon workers in Bessemer, Alabama in the United States will be held based on objections to the first vote that took place in April.

The move is a major blow to Amazon, which had spent about a year aggressively campaigning for warehouse workers in Bessemer to reject the union, which they ultimately did by a wide margin.

The rare call for a do-over was first announced Monday by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), which spearheaded the union organising movement. A National Labor Relations Board spokeswoman confirmed the decision but did not yet provide details.

The RWDSU charged Amazon with illegal misconduct during the first vote. In August, the hearing officer at NLRB who presided over the case determined that Amazon violated labour law and recommended that the regional director set aside the results and direct another election.

The main reason for the determination was a US Postal Service mailbox that Amazon installed in the parking lot ahead of the election, which could have left the false impression that the company was running the election. Security cameras in the parking lot could have scared off workers who thought Amazon may have been watching workers vote. About 53 percent of the nearly 6,000 workers cast ballots during the first election.

Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, called the decision “disappointing”.

“Our employees have always had the choice of whether or not to join a union, and they overwhelmingly chose not to join the RWDSU earlier this year,” she said. “It’s disappointing that the NLRB has now decided that those votes shouldn’t count.”

Stuart Appelbaum, president of the RWDSU, sees the NLRB decision as a victory.

“Today’s decision confirms what we were saying all along – that Amazon’s intimidation and interference prevented workers from having a fair say in whether they wanted a union in their workplace – and as the Regional Director has indicated, that is both unacceptable and illegal, “ he said in a statement. “Amazon workers deserve to have a voice at work, which can only come from a union.”

But even with a second election, labour experts say a union victory is a long shot. Amazon will likely appeal and try to delay another vote. And even when an election is held, workers may choose to vote against joining a union again. Last time around, 1,798 workers rejected the union and 738 voted in favour of it.

A repeat of the election means another battle for Amazon with the RWDSU. The first election garnered nationwide attention and put a spotlight on how Amazon treats its workers. It was the biggest union push in Amazon’s history and only the second time that an organising effort from within the company had come to a vote.

Pro-union employees at the Bessemer facility said they spent 10-hour shifts on their feet in the warehouse, where online orders are packed and shipped, and didn’t have enough time to take breaks. A union could force Amazon to offer more break time or higher pay, those workers said. Amazon, meanwhile, argued that it already offered more than twice the minimum wage in Alabama plus benefits without workers having to pay union dues.

This is the second unionising attempt by Amazon workers in the past year.

A group of Amazon workers in Staten Island, New York withdrew its petition to hold a vote to unionise early in November. The workers, however, can refile a petition.

The organising effort in New York City is working without the help of a national sponsor and is being spearheaded by a former Amazon employee, Christian Smalls. He said he was fired just hours after he organised a walkout last year to protest working conditions at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Commonwealth Plans Big Tech Investments as More of Its Advisors Ditch FINRA

As Commonwealth finishes up a strong year of growth, Wayne Bloom, its CEO, pointed to some of his firm’s 2021 successes and plans for 2022 that include the coming launch of next-generation versions of its three major advisor-facing tools and a major investment in its cybersecurity initiatives.

Commonwealth’s revenue so far this year is up about 21% from the same period a year ago, while fee revenue is up 28% and assets under management are up about 30% to about $270 billion, he told ThinkAdvisor during a recent phone interview.

About 85% of advisor revenue is now fee-based at the firm, he noted, adding: “Commonwealth actually looks more like a national RIA than it does a traditional broker-dealer.”

About 200 of the firm’s more than 2,000 advisors have dropped their Financial Industry Regulatory licenses and are now affiliated with Commonwealth on a fee-only basis, he said, adding that about 80-100 advisors had dropped their FINRA licenses as of about a year ago. “I think there’s several more that are sort of in the queue” to transition to fee-only, he added.

As the company noted at its recent National Conference, the firm’s advisors are thriving in a challenging year. Other data that the firm shared at the conference included Preferred Portfolio Services, its managed account platform, growing to over $155 billion.

Advisor Tool Enhancements

Commonwealth is “finishing up work on the next generation of three major advisor-facing tools,” Bloom said, referring to: Client360 Beta, Trading & Model Management, and Digital Onboarding.

Client360 is the firm’s flagship tool that he noted “contains everything an advisor needs to serve their clients: Portfolio management, document management, CRM, performance reporting [and] financial planning.” That tool is “getting a brand-new look and feel and improved functionality across the board,” he said.

Trading & Model Management, Commonwealth’s rebalancing tool, is “getting even smarter, allowing things like equivalencies and locks to be customized per account, per model or across an advisors’ business,” he said.

Digital Onboarding, meanwhile, represents the “evolution of our Client Account Wizard, which allows new accounts to be opened in real time, and existing accounts to be edited,” he said. The new version “will allow all signatures to be bundled into one DocuSign email, and for more client digital engagement,” he explained.

Amazon workers in Alabama will get another shot to unionise

A new union election for Amazon workers in Bessemer, Alabama in the United States will be held based on objections to the first vote that took place in April.

The rare call for a do-over was first announced Monday by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), which spearheaded the union organising movement. A National Labor Relations Board spokeswoman confirmed the decision but did not yet provide details.

The RWDSU charged Amazon with illegal misconduct during the first vote. In August, the hearing officer at NLRB who presided over the case determined that Amazon violated labour law and recommended that the regional director set aside the results and direct another election.

The main reason for the determination was a US Postal Service mailbox that Amazon installed in the parking lot ahead of the election, which could have left the false impression that the company was running the election. Security cameras in the parking lot could have scared off workers who thought Amazon may have been watching workers vote. About 53 percent of the nearly 6,000 workers cast ballots during the first election.

Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, called the decision “disappointing”.

“Our employees have always had the choice of whether or not to join a union, and they overwhelmingly chose not to join the RWDSU earlier this year,” she said. “It’s disappointing that the NLRB has now decided that those votes shouldn’t count.”

Stuart Appelbaum, president of the RWDSU, sees the NLRB decision as a victory.

“Today’s decision confirms what we were saying all along – that Amazon’s intimidation and interference prevented workers from having a fair say in whether they wanted a union in their workplace – and as the Regional Director has indicated, that is both unacceptable and illegal, “ he said in a statement. “Amazon workers deserve to have a voice at work, which can only come from a union.”

But even with a second election, labour experts say a union victory is a long shot. Amazon will likely appeal and try to delay another vote. And even when an election is held, workers may choose to vote against joining a union again. Last time around, 1,798 workers rejected the union and 738 voted in favour of it.

A repeat of the election means another battle for Amazon with the RWDSU. The first election garnered nationwide attention and put a spotlight on how Amazon treats its workers. It was the biggest union push in Amazon’s history and only the second time that an organising effort from within the company had come to a vote.

Pro-union employees at the Bessemer facility said they spent 10-hour shifts on their feet in the warehouse, where online orders are packed and shipped, and didn’t have enough time to take breaks. A union could force Amazon to offer more break time or higher pay, those workers said. Amazon, meanwhile, argued that it already offered more than twice the minimum wage in Alabama plus benefits without workers having to pay union dues.

This is the second unionising attempt by Amazon workers in the past year.

A group of Amazon workers in Staten Island, New York withdrew its petition to hold a vote to unionise early in November. The workers, however, can refile a petition.

The organising effort in New York City is working without the help of a national sponsor and is being spearheaded by a former Amazon employee, Christian Smalls. He said he was fired just hours after he organised a walkout last year to protest working conditions at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Approach

We worked with First Commonwealth and spent time in the communities they serve to understand FC’s value and how FC could offer something unique and different to their members. Our proposal consisted of the radical idea to dedicate one-third of the branch space to a non-traditional-banking program focused on financial literacy and betterment. We originally named the program Common Cense, and it was renamed and implemented as the First Commonwealth Financial Wellness Center.

The program consists of an architecture of resources, tools, and content on financial literacy and money matters with a dedicated space within each of their branches. The Emmaus property was the first implementation where we were able to define the physical external form. The spaces are a hybrid retail space, coffee bar, and library. Branch staff were trained in financial literacy to be able to act as coaches and advisors for members. The physical space contains resources and props that reflect matters of money and are intended to be both part of the costco capital one credit card sign in of the space and conversation starters during engagement between members and staff. The branch launched with a basic setup which evolves over time. Also located in the front wellness center is an NCR interactive teller machine where members can engage with a remote teller. There are doors that separate the front space from the back to allow for after-hour events. 

Beyond the front wellness space is a redesigned branch environment consisting of advisory offices, conference space, teller pods, restrooms, and back of house area. The open design allows staff to easily move about the space, greeting members face-to-face, and interacting with them hip-to-hip.

As Commonwealth finishes up a strong year of growth, Wayne Bloom, its CEO, pointed to some of his firm’s 2021 successes and plans for 2022 that include the coming launch of next-generation versions of its three major advisor-facing tools and a major investment in its cybersecurity initiatives.

Commonwealth’s first commonwealth credit union so far this year is up about 21% from the same first commonwealth credit union a year ago, while fee revenue is up 28% and assets under management are up about 30% to about $270 billion, he told ThinkAdvisor during a recent phone interview.

About 85% of advisor revenue is now fee-based at the firm, he noted, adding: “Commonwealth actually looks more like a national RIA than it does a traditional broker-dealer.”

About 200 of the firm’s more than 2,000 advisors have dropped their Financial Industry Regulatory licenses and are now affiliated with Commonwealth on a fee-only basis, he said, adding that about 80-100 advisors had dropped their FINRA licenses as of about a year ago. “I think there’s several more that are sort of in the queue” to transition to fee-only, he added.

As the company noted at its recent National Conference, the firm’s advisors are thriving in a challenging year. Other data that the firm shared at the conference included Preferred Portfolio Services, its managed account platform, growing to over $155 billion.

Advisor Tool Enhancements

Commonwealth is “finishing up work on the next generation of three major advisor-facing tools,” Bloom said, referring to: Client360 Beta, Trading & Model Management, and Digital Onboarding.

Client360 is the firm’s flagship tool that he noted “contains everything an advisor needs to serve their clients: Portfolio management, document management, CRM, performance reporting [and] financial planning.” That tool is “getting a brand-new look and feel and improved functionality across the board,” he said.

Trading & Model Management, Commonwealth’s rebalancing tool, is “getting even smarter, allowing things like equivalencies and locks to be customized per account, per model or across an advisors’ business,” he said.

Digital Onboarding, meanwhile, represents the “evolution of our Client Account Wizard, which allows new accounts to be opened in real time, and existing accounts to be edited,” he said. The new version “will allow all signatures to be bundled into one DocuSign email, and for more client digital engagement,” he explained.
