Microsoft Word provides a plethora of features for handling content. One of these unique features is the ability to insert a PDF file directly into Word, and it can be done in only a few steps. Here’s how.

To easily insert a PDF file into your Word document, insert it as an object. If you do this, then the PDF essentially becomes a part of the Word document. That means any changes made to the source PDF file will not be reflected in the embedded file in the Word document unless you link to the source file, which we will explain later.

When you’re ready, open the Word document, and place your cursor where you would like to insert the PDF file. Next, select the “Insert” tab.

Next, click “Object” from the “Text” group.

A small drop-down menu will appear. Select “Object” from the menu.

The “Object” window will now appear. Here, click the “Create From File” tab and then select “Browse.”

Navigate to the location of the PDF, select it, and then click “Insert.”

Now, you need to decide if you want to (1) link directly to the source file, and/or (2) display the PDF as an icon. Linking directly to the source file is a good idea if you want to have the inserted PDF file reflect any new changes made to the source file. Be sure to enable this option if that’s your goal.

Displaying the PDF as an icon is good if you don’t want to take up too much space on the page. If you don’t enable any of these options, the PDF will be displayed in its entirety on the Word doc and won’t reflect any new changes made to the source file.

When you’re ready, select “OK.”

The PDF will now be inserted in the Word doc.

Part 1 of the PDF/A standard was created in 2005 to establish a universal standard for archiving documents. This ensures documents retain their original format even when viewed many years down the line. That’s necessary for many industries, particularly those under legal requirements to make documents available far into the future.

Along came PDF/A-2

PDF/A-2, which was released in 2011, adopted new implementations based on ISO standard 32000-1 instead of Adobe PDF. It also made use of newer versions and PDF updates. Core additions of PDF/A-2 included JPEG compression, transparency, and the ability to embed PDF/A files.

Now, meet PDF/A-3

In 2012, PDF/A-3 was released, adding a single yet noteworthy feature: it allows users to embed any file – not just another PDF – into a PDF document. This includes images, CAD, CSV, XML, and even binary executables. In essence, the PDF acts as a zip archive for other files.

The update was motivated by demand from multiple industries, most notably the medical and financing sectors that frequently rely on PDF for their logistics.

In the pharmaceutical industry, for instance, there are strict regulations regarding the storage and archiving of old patient and medical records. With PDF/A-3, documents of all types can travel together with a single PDF file acting as a transporter.

The three types of files PDF/A-3 can embed

  • SOURCE – This converts files like Microsoft Office into a PDF/A file. It also has applications used exclusively by specific industries. In the engineering and architect niche, for example, staff can use a PDF viewer like Foxit PDF Reader to display DWG files as a PDF/A.
  • SUPPLEMENT – This embeds all information pertaining to a document. This may, for instance, consist of images from a diagramming software like MindMap where the images are converted to PDF/A.
  • ALTERNATIVE – This is used for embedding XML files, such as digital invoices.

Archiving email

PDF/A is also used for archiving email messages in a storable format. All email content, including messages, images, and attachments are converted to a single file. PDF/A-3 enables all the contents in an email to retain their original form, making it especially useful.

First of all, we will show you how to insert attachments in the body of a composing e-mail message directly.

Step 1: Create a new email message:
  1. In Outlook 2010 / 2013, please click the New E-mail button in the New group on the Home tab.
  2. In Outlook 2007, please click the File > New > Mail Message.

Step 2: Convert current email message into the Rich Text format.

  1. In Outlook 2010 / 2013, please click the Rich Text button in the Format group on the Format Text tab.
  2. In Outlook 2007, please click the Rich Text button in the Format group on the Options tab.

Step 3: Place the cursor at the position you will add attachments in the body of composing message.

Step 3: Insert attachments with clicking the Attach File button or Outlook Items (or Attach Items) button on the Include group on the Insert tab.

And select the attached file in the popping up dialog box, and click OK or Insert button.

Method 2: Using iframe

The second method to embed a pdf in an HTML web page is the iframe tag.
The tag is widely used by web developers to embed files of various formats and even other webpages inside the concerned web page. Most browsers are compatible with this embed a pdf html code tag which is why this tag is widely used. This tag used to embed a pdf html code can also be used if a browser does not support PDF documents or the object tag.

  • The method to use the iframe tag to display pdf in web pages should be clear from this code snippet:

With PDF.js, PDFs are downloaded via AJAX and rendered onto a canvas element using native drawing commands. To improve performance, a lot of the processing work happens in a web worker.

To get started, all you need to do is to download a recent copy of PDF.js and you’re good to go.

(For this tutorial, go for the stable version)

Once you have downloaded the file, extract it. You will see two folders, namely
web and build.

The HTML file needs to point to the pdf.js source code and to our custom application code (simple.js). We also create a 'canvas' element, which we want the first page of the PDF to be rendered into:

Now all that’s missing is our simple.js code that leverages the PDF.js API to render the first page.
Here, I am assuming that you need to embed a pdf file which is named test.pdf

We can now work on the integration. To do this, we create a simple HTML file that will include the viewer via an iframe. This allows us to embed the viewer into an existing webpage very easily. The viewer is configured via URL parameters, a list of which can be found here. For our example, we will only configure the source PDF file. For more advanced features (like saving the PDF document to your web server again), you how to embed a pdf in an email simply start modifying the viewer.html file provided by PDF.js:

Note: If you're looking to insert the contents of your PDF file into an Office file, as opposed to simply inserting the PDF as an attachment, then your best bet is to open that PDF with Word 2013 or 2016. Word will convert the PDF to editable text and you can then copy and paste that text into your Office document. For more information, go to Edit How to embed a pdf in an email content in Word.

  1. Click Insert > Object in the Text group.

    For Outlook, click inside of the body of an item, such as an email message or calendar event.

  2. Click Create from File > Browse.

  3. Browse to the .pdf file you want to insert, and then click Open.

  4. Click OK.

  • If you just want to reuse some of the text from a PDF—for example, a short passage—try copying and pasting it. Usually, you'll get plain text without the formatting.

  • With the PDF reflow feature available in Word 2013 and 2016, you can open and edit PDF content, such as paragraphs, lists, and tables, as Word documents. Word pulls the content from the fixed-format PDF document and flows that content into a .docx file while preserving as much of the layout information as it can. Word for the web doesn’t let you insert objects, such as PDFs, into a document. However, you can edit the PDF itself in Word for the web, which lets you update the PDF’s content, or copy and paste content from the PDF into a Word document.

Note: When you open a PDF in Word for the web, it is converted to a Word www walmart money card customer service and may not look exactly like the original document. For example, line and page breaks may happen in different spots. The conversion works best with PDFs that are mostly text.

If you own the Word desktop app, you can use it to add a PDF. Click Open in Word to start using the desktop app.
