Wells Fargo: Secured and unsecured personal loans

Why consider Wells Fargo: The bank is a national lender with branches in 36 states and offers unsecured loans.

Here are some more details about Wells Fargo.

  • Large loan amounts available — Fixed-rate unsecured loans range from $3,000 to $100,000.
  • Repayment terms — Loan terms range from one to seven years.
  • Competitive interest rates and a discount — Wells Fargo offers competitive interest rates. And depending on the type of account you have, you might be eligible for an interest rate discount of 0.25% or 0.50% if you have automatic payments from a qualifying Wells Fargo checking account.
  • Origination fee — There’s no origination fee on an unsecured personal loan.

Why consider SoFi: SoFi is an online lender, which can be appealing to people who prefer an online loan application process. SoFi promises no fees and provides several membership perks on its fixed-rate and variable-rate loans.

Here’s more info on SoFi.

  • Extra perks — As a SoFi member, you’ll get a 0.125% interest rate discount on certain loan types. You’ll also get access to career services and member experiences, complimentary guidance from licensed financial advisers, unemployment protection, and even a referral bonus for every person you refer who becomes a SoFi member.
  • Loan amounts — If approved, you can borrow $5,000 to $100,000, which you’ll have to repay over a period of two to seven years. (Keep in mind that SoFi might offer different terms on Credit Karma.)
  • Fixed and variable APRs — You can apply for a loan with a fixed interest rate that won’t change during your loan term or a variable rate, which could fluctuate. SoFi’s annual percentage rates are very competitive.
  • Prequalification available — You can check your rate without having it hurt your credit scores. Just keep in mind that prequalifying for a loan doesn’t mean you’re actually approved. For that, you’ll need to submit a formal loan application, which may include a hard credit inquiry that can drop your credit scores.

LightStream: Low interest rates

Why consider LightStream: LightStream is the online lending division of Truist. What sets it apart from other lenders are its low interest rates and its “rate beat” program.

Here are some more details on LightStream.

  • Rate beat program — LightStream offers a rate that is 0.1 percentage points lower than the rates offered by competing lenders if you meet certain requirements.
  • Competitive interest rates — Interest rates are very competitive, depending on your credit and other factors — and they may include a 0.5% rate discount for setting up automatic payments.
  • Loan amounts — Loan amounts range from $5,000 to $100,000, which you can repay over two to 12 years. And you might be able to receive loan funds as soon as the same business day.
  • No prepayment penalty — LightStream doesn’t charge a prepayment penalty if you want to pay off your loan early. It also doesn’t charge origination or late payment fees.

Learn more about LightStream in our review.

Avant: Loans for people with less-than-perfect credit

Why consider Avant: Avant is another online lender, and it says that most of its customers who are approved for loans have a credit score of 600 to 700. If your credit needs some work, Avant could be an option for you.

Here’s more about Avant.

  • Loan amounts — Amounts range from $2,000 to $35,000, which you can repay with monthly payments over a span of two to five years.
  • Higher APRs — Avant doesn’t offer an interest rate discount, and its rates are higher than the other lenders covered here. That’s not necessarily unexpected, since Avant works with people with less-than-perfect credit. And its loan rates may still be cheaper than those on a credit card.
  • Administration fee — Avant charges an administration fee of up to 4.75% on all of its loans.
  • Potentially fast funding — You could receive approved loan funds as soon as the next business day if you need fast cash for an emergency expense or large purchase.

Student Loan Payment Amount Estimator

Your student loan repayment term

Your loan repayment term is the number of years you have to pay it back. Federal loans generally have a standard repayment schedule of 10 years.2 For private student loans, the repayment term can range anywhere from 5-20 years, depending on the loan. You'll be given a definite term for your loan when you apply.

Interest rates for federal and private student loans

The average interest rate will be different for federal student loans and private student loans. Federal student loans have a single, fixed interest rate, which means that your loan's rate doesn't change over time.

You may have noticed that there's a range of interest rates associated with a private student loan. Private student loans are credit-based. That means the rate you'll be offered depends on your creditworthiness—and that of your cosigner, if you have one—together with several other factors. When you apply for a loan, you'll be given an interest rate, either fixed or variable, depending on which is offered and which type of rate you've chosen.

Loan-to-Deposit Ratio (LDR)

What Is Loan-to-Deposit Ratio (LDR)?

The loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) is used to assess a bank's liquidity by comparing a bank's total loans to its total deposits for the same period. The LDR is expressed as a percentage. If the ratio is too high, it means that the bank may not have enough liquidity to cover any unforeseen fund requirements. Conversely, if the ratio is too low, the bank may not be earning as much as it could be.

Key Takeaways

  • The loan-to-deposit ratio is used to assess a bank's liquidity by comparing a bank's total loans to its total deposits for the same period.
  • To calculate the loan-to-deposit ratio, divide a bank's total amount of loans by the total amount of deposits for the same period.
  • Typically, the ideal loan-to-deposit ratio is 80% to 90%. A loan-to-deposit ratio of 100 percent means a bank loaned one dollar to customers for every dollar received in deposits it received.

Explaining Loan-To-Deposit Ratio

Formula and Calculation for LDR

LDR=Total DepositsTotal Loans

To calculate the loan-to-deposit ratio, divide a bank's total amount of loans by the total amount of deposits for the same period. You can find the figures on a bank's balance sheet. Loans are listed as assets while deposits are listed as liabilities.

What Does LDR Tell You?

A loan-to-deposit ratio shows a bank's ability to cover loan losses and withdrawals by its customers. Investors monitor the LDR of banks to make sure there's adequate liquidity to cover loans in the event of an economic downturn resulting in loan defaults.

Also, the LDR helps to show how well a bank is attracting and retaining customers. If a bank's deposits are increasing, new money and new clients are being on-boarded. As a result, the bank will likely have more money to lend, which should increase earnings. Although it's counterintuitive, loans are an asset for a bank since banks earn interest income from lending. Deposits, on the other hand, are liabilities because banks must pay an interest rate on those deposits, albeit at a low rate.

The LDR can help investors determine if a bank is managed properly. If the bank isn't increasing its deposits or its deposits are shrinking, the bank will have less money to lend. In some cases, banks will borrow money to satisfy its loan demand in an attempt to boost interest income. However, if a bank is using debt to finance its lending operations instead of deposits, the bank will have debt servicing costs since it will need to pay interest on the debt.

As a result, a bank that borrows money to lend to its customers will typically have lower profit margins and more debt. A bank would rather use deposits to lend since the interest rates paid to depositors are far lower than the rates it would be charged for borrowing money. The LDR helps investors spot the banks that have enough deposits on hand to lend and won't need to resort to increasing their debt.

The proper LDR is a delicate balance for banks. If banks lend too much of their deposits, they might overextend themselves, particularly in an economic downturn. However, if banks lend too few of their deposits, they might have opportunity cost since their deposits would be sitting on their balance sheets earning no revenue. Banks with low LTD ratios might have lower interest income resulting in lower earnings.

Multiple factors can drive changes in the loan-to-deposit ratios. Economic conditions can impact loan demand as well as how much investors deposit. If consumers are unemployed, they're unlikely to increase their deposits. The Federal Reserve bank regulates monetary policy by raising and lowering interest rates. If rates are low, loan demand might increase depending on the economic conditions. In short, there are many outside factors that impact a bank's LDR.

What Is an Ideal LDR?

Typically, the ideal loan-to-deposit ratio is 80% to 90%. A loan-to-deposit ratio of 100% means a bank loaned one dollar to customers for every dollar received in deposits it received. It also means a bank will not have significant reserves available for expected or unexpected contingencies.

Regulations also factor into how banks are managed and ultimately their loan-to-deposit ratios. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation do not set minimum or maximum loan-to-deposit ratios for banks. However, these agencies monitor banks to see if their ratios are compliant with section 109 of the Riegle-Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994 (Interstate Act).

Example of LDR

If a bank has $500 million in deposits and $400 million in loans, the bank's LDR ratio would be calculated by dividing the total loans by its total deposits.

LDR=$500 million$400 million=.8=80%

LDR vs. LTV Ratio

Loan-to-value (LTV) ratio is an assessment of lending risk that financial institutions and other lenders examine before approving a mortgage. Typically, assessments with high LTV ratios are higher risk and, therefore, if the mortgage is approved, the loan costs the borrower more.

The LTV ratio measures the value of the property versus the amount of the loan while the LDR measure's a bank's ability to cover its loans with its deposits.

Limitations of the LDR

The LDR helps investors to assess the health of a bank's balance sheet, but there are limitations to the ratio. The LDR does not measure the quality of the loans that a bank has issued. The LDR also does not reflect the number of loans that are in default or might be delinquent in their payments.

As with all financial ratios, the LDR is most effective when compared to banks of the same size, and similar makeup. Also, it's important for investors to compare multiple financial metrics when comparing banks and making investment decisions.

Real World Example of LDR

As of 12/31/2018, Bank of America Corporation (BAC) reported its financial results according to its 8K statement and had the following numbers.

  • Total loans: $946.9 billion
  • Total deposits: $1,381.50 trillion
  • Bank of America's LDR is calculated as follows: $946.9 / $1,381.50
  • LDR = 68.5%

The ratio tells us that Bank of America lent roughly 70% of its deposits by the end of 2018.

Let’s Get Personal: Understanding How to Get a Personal Loan

The rise of personal loans

Sue is driving her daughter to a follow-up doctor’s visit for a broken leg, thinking about paying her recent medical bills. She asks Siri, "How do I get a personal loan?"

Jack has recently started a small food truck business that sells tacos. Sales are booming, but so are his credit card balances. He wants to take out a personal loan to pay off those looming bills and consolidate his debt but isn’t sure where to start.

If you, like Sue and Jack, have heard of personal loans but find yourself Googling "how to get a personal loan from a bank," you’re not alone. Many Americans have researched and taken out personal loans recently.1 The number of personal loans rose from 16.9 million to 19.2 million from 2017 to 2018.1 If you think that’s a lot of dollars floating around, you’re right. The total balance for all personal loans grew from $102 billion at the beginning of 2017 to $120 billion at the beginning of 2018.1

What is an installment loan?

Sometimes personal loans are referred to as an installment loan, but the two terms really mean the same thing. Personal loans can be used for a lot of different things—that’s part of the beauty.

To get a personal loan, you’ll first need to apply for one from a bank or online financial company. Not everyone who applies will qualify, but if you do, the institution may lend you a certain amount, such as $10,000. Then you pay it back during a set amount of time.

Each payment is usually called an installment. For example, you might have a monthly payment, or installment, of $300 each month. You’ll typically owe that amount each month for a certain number of years until you pay back the full amount.

Collateral and personal loans

Personal loans are usually unsecured. That means that personal loan requirements don’t include collateral to back up the loan.2

Collateral is an asset, like a car or home, which might be used to pay back the loan if you are unable to send in payments for a long time.

If a loan does require collateral, it’s called a secured loan. A home loan or a car loan would be considered a secured loan. How do they work? Well, for example, when you take out a mortgage, the home is usually used as collateral. If you miss too many mortgage payments, the financial institution that lent you the money could take your home in return for the money you received and weren’t able to repay.

Since personal loans don’t require collateral, that means that interest can sometimes be higher.2 Interest is a fee for using the bank’s money. That interest is typically included in your monthly installment payments.

A personal loan to pay off debt

Taking out a personal loan can also be a way to consolidate debt. This is the idea of putting all your debts together. If you have several different debts and find it hard to keep track of them, combining them into a personal loan can make it easier to focus on sending out just one payment.

Another key benefit of personal loan consolidation for debt is that you might get a lower interest rate. If you have credit card debt on a few different cards that have a high interest rate, you could get an installment loan to pay off the credit card debt. Instead of paying off several debts with high interest rates, you can work toward paying off one personal loan to pay less overall.

To get a deeper dive into how installment loans work, consider these two scenarios.

Using a Personal Loan to Get Back on Track

Sue’s daughter recently broke her leg. While her daughter’s feeling much better, the incident left Sue with a few extra medical bills she wasn’t expecting.

For this reason, Sue is looking for help to get the medical bills paid. She decides to see if a personal loan might be the solution. After asking Siri how to apply for personal loan, Sue learns she can take one out through a bank or online lender.

Since she doesn't need collateral for this type of loan, Sue feels comfortable taking out a loan for $5,000 with an 8% interest rate. She’ll make a payment of about $100 each month for 5 years to pay off the personal loan.3 By taking out a personal loan, Sue can be better able to handle this unexpected expense without it being a huge financial blow.

Using a Personal Loan to Consolidate Debt

Jack had very little savings when he started his food truck business. To pay for supplies, he used his credit cards. He now has balances of $5,000 on two cards, and one card with a balance of $10,000. That’s $20,000 of debt that needs to be paid off.

Jack researches his options and finds out he can get a $20,000 personal loan to pay off his debt. Jack’s credit cards have high interest rates, ranging from 10% to 20% on the balances. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars on interest, he can save by putting the amounts together in a personal loan to focus on paying off the lump sum of $20,000. And since his loan has an interest rate of just 8%., this lowers the amount he’ll pay overall on the debt.

Understanding the Details of Personal Loans

Even though personal loans can be helpful, it’s important to consider a few things before taking out a personal loan. Understanding what’s involved with a personal loan will help you avoid issues that could come up later. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when you are thinking about an installment loan:

Can I make the payments? Look at your monthly budget to see if you can afford the amount due each month. It can be a struggle if you’re scrambling every time an installment is due.

What will I pay in all? Like other loans, personal loans usually charge interest rates and fees. In addition to paying back what you borrow, you can expect to pay an additional amount. This can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars, depending on the loan and bank.

Say you take out a personal loan for $30,000 with a 10% annual percentage rate (APR). APR is your interest stated as a yearly rate. In simpler terms, it’s the price you pay to borrow money. So if you took seven years to pay back this loan, you could end up paying more than $40,000 total.3

Is it a need or a want? While emergencies happen, sometimes it’s better to save up and use your own funds to pay for special purchases. Thinking through factors like wants and needs can be helpful when considering if a personal loan is the right choice.
