Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is facing increasing bleaching (AFP via Getty Images)

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has a chance of survival if global warming can be limited to 1.5C, a target that the Paris agreement also demands, according to a new study.

The study published on Friday by an Australian university showed that only two per cent of the reef has remained unaffected by bleaching since 1998.

Bleaching is a phenomenon where coral reefs begin to lose their colour and turn white as heat waves increase the temperature of sea water. Many coral reefs also struggle to survive due to the heat.

“If we can hold global warming to 1.5 degrees global average warming then I think we’ll still have a vibrant Great Barrier Reef,” the study’s lead author, professor Terry Hughes, of the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies said, according to Reuters.

Professor Hughes said that even the most remote, most pristine parts of the Great Barrier Reef have now bleached severely at least once, due to increasing heat waves. And what makes it worse is the frequency of bleaching events, which does not give enough time for the corals to recover.

The lead author of the study demanded stricter measures from Australia to protect the reefs. But the country has already refused to promise to cut methane emissions at the Cop26 summit.

“The government is still issuing permits for new coal mines and for new methane gas deals and it’s simply irresponsible in terms of Australia’s responsibilities to the Great Barrier Reef,” Mr Hughes said. “If we go to 3, 4 degrees of global average warming, which is tragically the trajectory we are currently on, then there won’t be much left of the Great Barrier Reef or any other coral reefs throughout the tropics.”

The 1.5C target was also the focus of the Cop26 in Glasgow. But despite updated climate action goals announced by world leaders at the summit, projections have found that warming would be limited to 1.8C if all nations matched their net-zero pledges and stuck to plans to slash methane emissions by 2030.

A snap analysis published on Wednesday found that pledges announced at Cop26 could be enough to put the world on track to limiting global temperature rise to 1.9C – an improvement on earlier estimates but still above the Paris Agreement’s aspiration of 1.5C. Global temperatures have already risen by more than 1C since pre-industrial times, leading to an increase in the frequency and severity of costly extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods and typhoons.

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Researchers in Maine have expressed concern that if they experience a few degrees of global warming, they will no longer be able to grow potatoes. But given Maine potato varieties are extensively grown in subtropical Bundaberg, my question is, what problem are the researchers actually trying to solve?

Researchers try producing potato resistant to climate change

Nov 28, 2021

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — University of Maine researchers are trying to produce potatoes that can better withstand warming temperatures as the climate changes.

Warming temperatures and an extended growing season can lead to quality problems and disease, Gregory Porter, a professor of crop ecology and management, told the Bangor Daily News.

“The predictions for climate change are heavier rainfall events, and potatoes don’t tolerate flooding or wet conditions for long without having other quality problems,” Porter said. “If we want potatoes to be continued to be produced successfully in Maine, we need to be able to produce varieties that can be resistant to change.”

Around the world, research aimed at mitigating crop damage is underway. A NASA study published this month suggests climate change may affect the production of corn and wheat, reducing yields of both, as soon as 2030.

Bundaberg, Australia (24 degrees south, average annual temperature 77F) is a major potato and root vegetable growing region, along with sugar cane, strawberries, pineapples and bananas and who knows what else. Bundaberg experiences lots of tropical rainfall and occasional flooding.

Subtropical Bundaberg actually grows MAINE potatoes. They are no different to the varieties farmers plant or have planted in Maine.

The Subtropical Bundaberg grown Sebago potatoes at the top of the picture were developed by the United States Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with Maine Agricultural Experiment Station in 1938.

What is the secret of Bundaberg’s success with potatoes developed in Maine? Very simple – Bundaberg farmers plant the potatoes in Fall, the plants mature over winter, and they harvest in Spring, before the Summer heat kills them. The closer to the tropics you get, the sooner you need to plant, if you want to grow temperate climate vegetables, until somewhere around 27 degrees from the equator you swing right through winter and start planting in Fall.

My point is the problems of how to grow crops like potatoes in warm climates have already been solved, by farmers who have been growing potatoes in warm climates for centuries. Suggestions that this is any kind of a challenge seem a little far fetched.

There is no remotely plausible level of global warming which Maine could experience in the next century which would come close to Maine matching Bundaberg’s climate. Any warming in Maine could be addressed by simply changing the planting time by a few days, a little drainage work, and maybe importing some Australian tropical potato farming knowhow.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
629pm EST Monday Nov 29 2021

Synopsis
It will remain cold with mountain snow showers through midweek. A warm front will cross the region Thursday with coastal rain showers and a snowy mix for interior areas. Quiet weather is expected for the end of the work week with cold and blustery conditions returning.

Near Term - Tonight
630PM Made some adjustments to overnight temperatures as winds are expected to die off under a clear sky for most of the area, allowing the temperature to drop toward the dewpoint. Some clouds are approaching from the northwest and will hold temperatures up noaa weather forecast bangor maine the northwest of the mountains once they arrive. But over the coastal plain and the southern two thirds of NH it should remain mostly clear. Under this scenario it's likely the coldest spots will be in the valleys southeast of the mountains, such as around Fryeburg, where lows near 10 are possible. Otherwise no significant changes in forecast thinking.

ORIGINAL Weak high pressure builds in from the west tonight, this will allow for skies to continue to clear, and winds to diminish. May see some clouds develop over the mountains as a weak wave passes well to the N. Otherwise it will be mainly clear with lows ranging from to 10-15 in the N to around 20 in southern NH and on the ME coast.

Short Term - Tuesday Through Wednesday
The weak surface high will crest over the area on Tue, leading to a mainly sunny day. Noaa weather forecast bangor maine gradually shift from NW to WSW during the day but should be generally around 10 mph or less. Highs will range from around 30 in the mtns to the mid to upper 30s in the S.

A Weak clipper-like system passes N of the CWA Tuesday night, and will bring clouds and a chance of snow showers to the mountains, lingering into early Wednesday. Accumulations should be limited to the higher terrain, but a few of the mountain valleys could see a dusting. Lows will generally be in the 20s.

On Wednesday enhanced SW flow will bring warmer air into the region, although maybe more in the way of clouds, although will still call it partly sunny at least. Highs range from the mid 30s to mid 40s N-S.

Long Term - Wednesday Night Through Monday
A troughy pattern holds through the remainder of the week. and likely through the weekend. offering continued unsettled weather. Temperatures will tend to run near or just below normal, except in the warm sector of passing systems which bring temperatures into the 30s and 40s as opposed to the normal 20s and 30s. For impacts, we're looking at a couple time periods for potential travel difficulties due to snow. first on Noaa weather forecast bangor maine and again late Monday into Tuesday. A little weekend clipper could pose some risk as well, but is more likely to behave.

Starting out Wednesday night. a ridge of high pressure centered to the south will quickly cruise across the East Coast with increasing clouds and lows in the 20s, teens further north. A couple shortwave troughs will then impact the New England states with some potential for light snow mostly across southern and coastal zones during the morning along a warm front before a more potent low tracks down the Saint Lawrence later in the day Thursday. Model suites still show disagreement in the timing and phasing of these features with some (namely the American suite) showing more poor phasing and a slower, two-part passage with others (namely the European and Canadian suite) showing better phasing and an overall quicker passage.

A warm southwest flow picks back up during the day with temperatures pushing into the 40s to near 50 over the populated corridors. which allows any lingering showers to transition to rain during the day for the most part. The north has a tougher time warming with highs mostly in the mid- to upper-30s. More widespread precipitation arrives ahead of a negatively-tilted trough as it shoves across the Great Lakes during the afternoon and into the overnight. Given the noaa weather forecast bangor maine start and principle forcing centered to the north, am expecting most of this to fall as rain over the coastal plain. perhaps transitioning to a brief period of light snow as cool air wraps in behind the system, before it exits altogether. The cooler mountains will remain mostly if not all snow, picking up in intensity as the low crosses to the north later in the day. Modeled Quantitative Precipitation Forecast shows around 0.3-0.6" of liquid potential, so a couple to a few inches of snowfall potential exists across the mountains. but coastal and southern zones would struggle to accumulate much snow at all. As has been noted in prior AFDs. retreating high pressure isn't strong enough or located advantageously enough to lean on a CAD and produce more snowfall from this system. Model consensus continues to favor dominant low pressure positioned to the north with little if any coastal component, which increases confidence in a less impactful solution.

Strong Cold Air Advection behind the exiting system leaves potential for gusty winds and snow squall activity into Friday with much cooler temperatures in the 20s to near 40.plummeting down into the single digits and teens that night with waning upsloping showers. Winds have potential to be strong with gusts of 30+ mph, stronger in the downslopes immediately southeast of the mountains.

Flow aloft goes zonal over the weekend as the jet lifts north, overhead. This brings the threat for minor, clipper-like systems to impact the area with light snow showers possible. Otherwise am expecting variable cloudiness and a westerly to northwesterly breeze this weekend with highs in the 20s and 30s and lows in the single digits (north) to around 20 along the southern coast.

Marine
Short Term
SCA (Small Craft Advisory) for winds/seas overnight, then conditions subside enough to fall below SCA (Small Craft Advisory) criteria into Wed.

Long Term
Low pressure quickly crosses to the north of the waters Thursday. SCA (Small Craft Advisory) thresholds will likely be breached in SW flow on Thursday, then as the system passes a strong northwest wind threatens to bring gales into Friday. Weak high pressure returns for the weekend but disturbances aloft may bring brief SCAs, before a more significant system approaches early next week.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is facing increasing bleaching (AFP via Getty Images)

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has a chance of survival if global warming can be limited to 1.5C, a target noaa weather forecast bangor maine the Paris agreement also demands, according to a new study.

A snap analysis published on Wednesday found that pledges announced at Cop26 could be enough noaa weather forecast bangor maine put the world on track to limiting global temperature rise to 1.9C – an improvement on earlier estimates but still above the Paris Agreement’s aspiration of 1.5C. Global temperatures have already risen by more than 1C since pre-industrial times, leading to an increase in the frequency and severity of costly extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods and typhoons.
