Special bank holidays

There are laws that allow the dates of bank holidays to be changed, or other holidays to be declared, for example to celebrate special occasions. For example there is an extra bank holiday to mark The Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Time off for staff on bank or public holidays

As an employer, you don't have to provide paid leave on bank and public holidays, though many employers will provide this. Any right to time off or extra pay for working on a bank holiday depends on the terms of the employment contract with your employees.

Find out about employees' rights on pay and time off on public and bank holidays and for more information about paid leave, see know how much holiday to give your staff.

Which Banks Are Open on Sunday?

Long before the digital age, banks and financial institutions closed during the weekends because they needed the time to reconcile paper-based transactions that were initiated during weekdays.

Now:

The majority of transactions are handled electronically by computers.

As a result, the traditional weekly schedule for banks has changed slightly as many banks are open for business on Saturdays (albeit for shorter business hours compared to the weekdays).

However:

Most banks are still closed on Sundays.

Here are the banks that remain open for business on Sundays (please verify your local branch hours before making the trip):

Banks Open on Sunday

BankSunday hours (applicable branches)
Bank of America10 AM to 2 PM or 3 PM (Some locations)
Chase9 AM or 10 AM to 2 PM (Some New York City branches and Lakewood, NJ branch)
East West Bank10 AM to 2 PM or 3 PM (Most East Coast branches); 11 AM to 5 PM (Most West Coast branches)
Fifth Third Bank11 AM to 4 PM (Kroger supermarket locations)
Huntington Bank10 AM to 3 PM (Giant Eagle grocery store & pharmacy locations)
PNC Bank9 AM to 3 PM (Supermarket locations and some Pittsburgh branches)
Sterling National Bank9 AM to 2 PM (Some locations)
TD Bank11 AM to 3 PM
Valley BankRanges from 10 AM to 3 PM (Some locations)

Expect Shorter Hours

Based on our research, no banks offered their normal weekday hours during the weekend, including those that are open on Sunday.

Typically, expect Sunday hours to range from around 10 AM to 1 PM.

Furthermore:

If you have a branch with Sunday hours and it is located in a densely-populated area, don't be surprised to find that the branch is often overcrowded on Sundays.

Many people may only be free to visit a branch on a Sunday. And, the reduced hours means more customers funneled into that small time window.

Essentially, this means that you may wait longer to speak to a banker.

Tip: Try to set up an appointment with a banker if you know that you'll be visiting the branch on a Sunday (or any day for that matter).

Transactions Still Delayed

Although you may be able to walk into a bank to initiate a transaction, such as depositing a check, do note that it may not start processing on Sunday.

Why?

Sunday is not considered a normal "business day."

So, if it normally takes 3 business days for a check deposit to clear, don't expect the clock to start ticking on weekend.

Rather, the transaction may begin processing during the next business day -- most likely Monday morning.

Many federal U.S. holidays are observed on Mondays and these days are not considered business days by banks.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to all bank transactions -- it does apply to any transaction that requires several days to complete.

Additionally, some services (e.g., notary public services, medallion signature guarantee, etc.) may require the assistance of a branch manager, who may not be available on Sunday.

Banking Without a Branch

With the constant improvements in banking technology, customers can perform a majority of everyday transactions without ever having to step foot inside of a physical bank branch.

The combination of digital banking and ATM banking allows to you manage your bank accounts just fine.

Bill payments and fund transfers can be made with online and mobile banking.

The majority of common deposits and withdrawals can be performed at ATMs. Mobile banking apps make is possible to also deposit checks remotely by taking pictures of the check.

Is Monday 2 August a UK bank holiday? Why Scotland gets a day off today but England and Wales have to wait

Bank holidays might finally feel a bit more like normal after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions around the UK made trips to the pub and larger social gatherings an option once more.

However, while the dates of Christmas and the New Year are easy to keep track of, the Easter holidays and our other days off have an irritating tendency to move around the calendar each year.

To make matters worse, the dates differ slightly between UK nations, with the August bank holiday a prime example – here’s everything you need to know so you don’t get caught out.

Is Monday 2 August a bank holiday?

The summer bank holiday for Scotland is on Monday 2 August (it always falls on the first Monday of the month), but this is not the case anywhere else in the UK.

All four nations used to mark the same date, following the implementation of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, introduced by the Liberal Politician Sir John Lubbock.

However, the date for England, Wales and Northern Ireland moved permanently to the end of August in 1971, following a trial period which started in 1965.

It now falls on the last Monday of the month for these nations, which means this year’s day off will come on Monday 30 August.

This means that it falls at the end of the school summer holidays, while in Scotland pupils return much earlier in August.

Are Banks Open Today? Bank Holidays 2021

Are banks open today

Banks are open Monday through Friday, but have limited business hours on Saturdays. You’ll find most banks and credit unions close on holidays and Sundays. And when closed, in-branch services aren’t available. However, external automated teller machines (ATMs) should be open 24/7.

The Fed System follows a standard holiday schedule during which the U.S. Federal Reserve Banks and Branches are closed. While banks and credit unions aren’t required to close during these holidays, most usually do.

Keep in mind that during the pandemic, banks are closing some branches and reducing hours of operation. Check your bank’s website to look up the hours of the branch nearest you.

If your bank isn’t open, you can connect to your accounts and make payments, transfers, deposits and other routine banking business through your bank’s web or mobile app. In this article, we refer to when physical bank branches are open or closed.

National bank holidays

Banks don’t follow the exact same business what banks are open on monday when it comes to their branches, but they’ll follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday calendar. It includes the 10 standard federal holidays, which include:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

When a holiday falls on Saturday, banks and credit unions are typically open the preceding Friday. If the holiday falls on Sunday, banks are usually closed the following Monday. This follows a convention set by the Federal Reserve.

In addition, federal law established that some of these holidays be observed on Monday. These include:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: third Monday in January
  • Presidents’ Day (Washington’s birthday): third Monday in February
  • Memorial Day: last Monday in May
  • Labor Day: first Monday in September
  • Columbus Day: second Monday in October
  • Veterans Day: fourth Monday in October

Calendar of banks’ opening (and closing) days

While the actual date of most bank holidays above may change from year to year, the following holidays always fall on the same date:

  • New Year’s Day, January. 1
  • Independence Day, July 4
  • Christmas Day, December 25

Bank hours

Banks are generally open by 9.00 am on weekdays and close anywhere from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm depending on the institution and its location.

On Saturday, most banks and credit unions have reduced business hours: they’re generally open by 9.30 am and close usually by 1.00 or 2.00 pm, with some closing as early as noon.

Most banks close on Sunday. However, there are a few exceptions, such what banks are open on monday TD Bank, which keeps Sunday hours.

These are indicative hours and may differ for some institutions.

  1. they hand out $20 bills to prove that they aren't greedy, meanwhile those $20 bills will be popping back into TDs pocket at the end of the month when they pay their fees. TD has the highest fees in Canada. I examined all the banks.
