Omniplex Cinemas is a cinema chain in Ireland set up in 1991. As of 2018[update], it is operated by Paul Anderson. It operates cinemas throughout Ireland. In 2013, Omniplex began a €14.5m investment and renovation in a number of its cinemas including the rolling out across Ireland of its large screen format OmniplexMAXX.[1]

Omniplex owns 240 screens and 30 cinemas, with 15 in the Republic of Ireland and 15 cinemas in Northern Ireland.

Company history[edit]

The Anderson family have a long history in the film and cinema business dating back to 1948 when Kevin Anderson (Paul Anderson's father now retired) first started a film distribution business. The first films acquired were The Hills of Donegal and The Rose of Tralee, which were distributed to cinemas across Ireland.

The first cinema was purchased in Lucan in 1955, where company Chairman and Managing Director Paul Anderson started working at 8 years old before officially entering the business at 18.

The Andersons continued to acquire, redevelop and sell cinemas across Ireland over the subsequent decades. Their biggest acquisition came when they bought the Rank Cinemas portfolio in 1988, which included Dublin's flagship Savoy cinema and The Screen cinema, which the Andersons jointly owned as part of the Dublin Cinema Group until 2013.

The origins of Omniplex lie with the evolution of multiplex cinemas in the early 1990s. The first cinema to be branded an Omniplex was in Santry (now IMC). Since then Omniplex have expanded in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, there are 23 Omniplex cinemas currently operating. This includes the 13 screen Cork Omniplex which opened in 2005 and the Rathmines Omniplex which completed in 2014 following a 15-year campaign to open cinemas in The Swan SC, which the Andersons acquired in 1999.

The company announced the acquisition of the Quayside cinema in Balbriggan, which was bought from NAMA and refurbished at a cost of €1.5m.[2]

As well as screening films Omniplex cinemas also show live events that are broadcast from around the world. This includes weekly live show from New York's Met Opera, The Bolshoi Ballet and music concerts.

Omniplex are reported to sell 5.5m cinema tickets per year.[1]

Acquiring of the Gaiety Cinema Group[edit]

It May 2015 it was announced that Omniplex had bought the Gaiety Cinema Group (GCG) in an €8m deal. GCG owned two cinemas in Sligo and Arklow, in the Bridgewater Shopping Centre[3][4]

OmniplexMAXX[edit]

The OmniplexMAXX is the next generation of giant format cinemas screens being rolled out across Omniplex's cinemas. This includes the OmniplexMAXX in Antrim which, at 23 metres wide, is Ireland's widest cinema screen. Other OmniplexMAXX screens have opened in Mahon, Cork, Limerick, Banbridge, Waterford and Rathmines, which opened in 2014 with the Irish premier of The Inbetweeners 2.[5] New OmniplexMAXX screens are planned in Dundonald and Dundalk. The auditoriums include custom-designed leather reclining armchairs as standard, HD digital projection, MasterImage 3D and Dolby Atmos surround sound.[6]

Omniparks[edit]

In 2015 Omniplex launched OmniPark, the new leisure park brand covering four of the parks that company owns, on which it has cinemas. Omniparks are located in Dundonald, Craigavon, Bangor and Omagh.[7][8]

Ward Anderson Court Case[edit]

The Andersons were formerly partners of the Wards, owners of Irish Multiplex Cinemas in the Ward Anderson cinemas empire. However, two families fell out after the Andersons signed a deal to build a cinema on the Stephen's Green shopping centre, without notifying, or involving the Wards in the new cinema. The new cinema would have been in direct competition with their jointly owned cinemas in Dublin city centre, The Savoy, and The Screen.[9] This resulted in a long-running legal struggle that led to a major case in Four Courts in which the Ward and Anderson families eventually agreed to split their cinema empire in January 2013.[10][11][12][13][14]

The agreement to divide the assets allocated 23 cinemas to the Anderson family including the 13-screen Cork Omniplex and 22 other cinemas in their Omniplex Cinemas Group. The Ward family were allocated 12 cinemas in their Irish Multiplex Cinemas group, including the Savoy and Screen cinemas in Dublin.[15]

Paul Anderson is the son of Kevin Anderson who is one of the co-founders of Ward Anderson.[16]

Legendary director Stanley Kubrick was known to have said that he was not really a Jew, he just happened to have two Jewish parents. But though he may have tried to divert from this fact, Kubrick, who passed away in 1999 at the age of 70, was born and died a Jew, and Jewishness threads through and underpins all 13 of his films.

Kubrick was famously silent on the meaning of his movies, so their messages are open to interpretation on a number of levels. He covered many genres and topics – starting with war movie Fear and Desire in 1953, and ending with marital drama in Eyes Wide Shut (1999) – and his films broke new ground in cinematic style.

But Kubrick, who is possibly the most written about film director after Alfred Hitchcock, has rarely been thought of as a Jewish director. This is because few dedicated researchers have not bothered to probe his ethnic background in any detail.

Kubrick the Jewish man

Kubrick had a history of working with Jewish actors as his leading men and women. Notably Paul Mazursky, Joe Turkel (three times), Kirk Douglas (twice), Peter Sellers (twice), Shelley Winters, Aubrey Morris, Miriam Karlin, and Sydney Pollack. He also worked with Jewish writers, including Howard Fast, Michael Herr and Frederic Raphael, and considered adapting the work of such Jewish authors as Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig and Louis Begley. He adored the work of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and writer Franz Kafka too. But this alone is not makes him a Jewish filmmaker.

Although Kubrick was never a practising Jew and the Jewish references and viewpoint are not explicit or obvious in his films, once you consider his films from the standpoint of his ethnicity, as well as his cultural and intellectual milieu, then some resonant themes emerge.

Though Kubrick famously worked on a Holocaust film, The Aryan Papers, which never came to fruition, his body of work went far beyond that in terms of Jewish references.

His first feature, Fear and Desire (1953) is his spin on the World War II platoon movie, which typically contained a range of ethnicities and races. True to form, Kubrick cast Mazursky as the shaky (Jewish) recruit Private Sidney. Killer’s Kiss in 1955 is very much moulded in the tradition of the Jewish boxing movie – features such as Body and Soul (1947), directed by Robert Rossen. Kubrick’s film noir, The Killing (1956), could well have as its tagline the Yiddish proverb, “Man plans, God laughs”. All three of these early films could also be described as existentialist, a philosophy popular with Jewish intellectuals in the postwar era, especially in Greenwich Village, New York City, where Kubrick then lived.

In dealing with a major incident of French military injustice during World War I, Paths of Glory (1957), recalls the antisemitic Dreyfus affair, a major cause célèbre of the 19th century. The epic Spartacus (1960) posits a Moses-like liberator who leads Roman slaves out of bondage while also considering such issues as McCarthyism, the Hollywood blacklist, civil rights, the Holocaust and the birth of the State of Israel – all issues of Jewish concern in the 1950s.

In 1964, Dr. Strangelove conflated nuclear holocaust with the Holocaust, particularly through its titular character, the former Nazi Dr. Strangelove, at a time when the Adolf Eichmann Trial was fresh in people’s memories.

Looking further at Kubrick’s later films, 2001: A Space Odyssey – which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year – plays with the Hebrew Bible, Jewish liturgy, as well as Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism. It is full of numerological references with the number four recurring frequently. A Clockwork Orange (1971) explores Judeo-Christian ideas of choice and conveys a very traditional Jewish viewpoint on the issue of free will. And Barry Lyndon (1975) warns of the dangers of social climbing in places where you don’t belong – a traditional Jewish fear, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Shining (1980) – Kubrick’s contribution to the horror genre – deals with the very biblical theme of the sacrifice of the son by the father, as found in Genesis 22. And Full Metal Jacket (1987), while ostensibly about Vietnam, is, on one level, about the Holocaust and man’s propensity to evil and genocide.

This is all capped off by Eyes Wide Shut, possibly Kubrick’s most Jewish film – given it was adapted from the work of Jewish author Arthur Schnitzler and heavily influenced by the theories of his Jewish contemporary Sigmund Freud. It also contains the most explicitly Jewish character in any Kubrick film, Victor Ziegler (played by Sydney Pollack).

Kubrick’s films never offer up anything easy or obvious. He made few statements about them. But he spent a long time working on his movies. He was meticulous and paid great attention to detail. He was extremely cultured, well read, and cultivated. He certainly had views that he wanted to share but did so in the least obvious ways. He wanted to make viewers work to understand his deeper messages.

Kubrick’s films were not just about Jews, Jewishness and Judaism, they are far wider than any single theme. But even though the man himself tried to distract from his Jewish roots, it cannot be denied that some of this material was surely intentional.

A&E consultant warns that the Welsh NHS is 'harming patients'

A senior consultant in A&E has warned that the Welsh NHS is "harming patients".

Dr Pete Williams, a consultant in emergency medicine and paediatric emergency medicine, said current pressures on the health service were leading to patients waiting dangerously long times to be seen.

The experienced doctor, who works in the emergency department at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, admitted he often finished his shift in a department full to bursting with patients.

"There is no capacity in any areas of the department. I've got six ambulances waiting outside. The longest has been there for just under three hours," said Dr Williams, who has worked in the NHS for more than two decades.

"This is not sustainable. We, this department, other departments around the country, the wider NHS are harming patients because they're not getting timely care."

Dr Williams spoke to ITV Cymru Wales as part of its programme Wales this Week, which follows frontline staff at Ysbyty Gwynedd as they navigate the mounting pressures on acute care.

Sister nurse Linda Rycroft, who also features, said she carried a tragic personal memory with her every day of her working life.

She explained: "Eighteen years ago I lost my mum. She was in her early 50s [and died] at home through an asthma attack. The ambulance didn't arrive because it was outside a hospital.

"It's very difficult for me now because I'm the person making that decision to keep that vehicle outside. So I can put myself in the position of that family member, of that patient."

Linda, who has worked for glenview state bank review NHS since 2006, said while she had a passion and drive for what she did, she had also begun to doubt the long-term future of the health service

She added: "Overwhelmingly in the last 18 months the main message that I have heard is 'protect the NHS' and we all have a joint responsibility to do that - to make sure the NHS is there for future generations. I don't want maurices credit card capital one number be the last cohort of nurses that watch the NHS die."

"Winter's in front of us now, we are bracing ourselves," she said. "It is going to be busier than ever, we've got Covid on bangor cinema film times of it. Coming to work is quite challenging at times but it's the career we've chosen and the job is interesting and varied, so I do enjoy the role."

But despite everything that has happened in the last 18 months - and even further back - she said she didn't regret choosing a life in the health service

"I don’t know what else I'd do to be honest," she explained. "I've always been a nurse. This is what I've live tv app xbox one since I was 18."

Bethan said she believed the NHS was holding up, for now, but that things as they stood were simply not sustainable and that staff were feeling the strain.

"I think they're kemba financial credit union auto loans it mentally as well now on the wards. They're not able to deliver the care they want to deliver. They don’t want patients in ambulances outside but it's inevitably what's happening because of the delays.

"It's a challenge every day and I don't know how long people can carry on with this."

Despite concerns on the ground, the Welsh Government said it was confident the NHS would find its way through its many challenges. Eluned Morgan, Minister for Health and Social Care, said it was her firm belief things would improve.

"I don’t think the NHS is broken," she told the programme. "I think it's under pressure like it's never seen before. But I'm absolutely confident that we're going to get through this.

She added: "There is a short-term issue here that we've got to address, which is the here and now and how do we get through this winter? There's a longer-term issue, which is how do we address the backlog and people who are, frankly, suffering in pain and that's the last thing I want to see as a health minister.

"And then there's the longer term issue, but we can start that now and that is how we all take more responsibility for our own health, how do we make sure we're fit, how do we make sure that we eat healthily, how do we make sure that we're really trying bangor cinema film times take responsibility ourselves for our own health?

"It's not going to be a quick fix but we're having huge recruitment campaigns, and we've put a huge amount of additional funding into the system."

UK Jewish Film Festival tour to stop in to Bangor's Pontio in November and December

The annual film festival is dedicated to world cinema that explores Jewish life, history and culture, and this year feature the Oscar nominated Welsh language film Solomon a Gaenor on Sunday, December 8 at 5.30pm.

Emyr Glyn Williams, Pontio’s cinema coordinator, said: "Pontio Cinema is proud to reveal our involvement with this year's nationwide UK Jewish Film Festival with a season of films in November and December.

"A definite festival highlight will be the UK wide re-release of the Welsh language Oscar nominated film Solomon a Gaenor, starring Ioan Gruffudd. "

The 1998 film tells the moving and passionate story of an illicit love between a Welsh girl and a Jewish boy in 1911 in the South Wales valleys.
