If you do not have transportation, we can help you get to your appointments for Medicaid-covered services. There is no cost to you for this service. Members can schedule transportation to and from medical appointments by phone or online.

  • The transportation service is not for rides to the Emergency Room (ER). Louisiana Healthcare Connections will provide transportation to providers up to a certain distance from your home. These limits are set by the Louisiana Department of Health’s Louisiana Medicaid medical service area standards. If you want to visit a provider outside of these limits, you may have to provide your own transportation.

Primary Care Providers (PCPs)

Specialist Providers

  • The limit is 60 miles (one-way) without authorization. 

Transportation to providers over these limits requires approval from Louisiana Healthcare Connections. Call 1-855-369-3723 and tell the transportation service why you need to see this provider. They will contact us to ask for authorization for your trip.

You must be ready at least two hours before your scheduled appointment time. You will be reminded of this time frame when you call to schedule your ride.

The driver will contact you when they arrive at your pick-up location. The driver will only wait ten (10) minutes for you. For your safety, drivers may not enter homes or facilities.

All drivers are trained to be courteous and wear an ID badge. Sign up for the text program to get an alert letting you know your driver’s name and what kind of vehicle to expect. All drivers have passed strict quality and ADA sensitivity training to ensure they are safe and experienced drivers.

Passengers are expected to follow the instructions of the driver. They are required to wear seatbelts. The use of offensive language is not allowed. No smoking, eating, or drinking is allowed in vehicles.

When you first call to schedule a trip, you will be asked if you would like to receive notifications by text message. You’ll get texts to remind you about your ride. You’ll also get texts to let you know when your driver is on the way and what kind of vehicle to expect. You can reply STOP or UNSUBSCRIBE at any time if you decide you don’t want to get text messages about transportation.

You can request a ride home three ways:

You may bring one additional passenger with you. You will be asked when you schedule your ride if you are bringing a passenger.

No. Drivers cannot provide car seats for children. You must provide your own car seat that meets state law requirements. Let the operator know when you schedule your appointment that you will be traveling with a child and providing car seats.  Members will be denied at pick up if they do not have a car seat.

No. Please bring your own walker, wheelchair or any other medical equipment you need. Let the operator know when you schedule your appointment that you will be bringing a wheelchair or other medical equipment. 

No. The transportation service cannot provide transportation to the emergency room. If you are having a health emergency, you should call 911. In an emergency, ambulance transportation is covered by Louisiana Healthcare Connections.

Yes. The transportation service can pick you up from the hospital or Emergency Room (ER) once a discharge order has been issued for you. To schedule your pickup, the facility must call 1-855-369-3723. Rides home after hospital discharge do not need approval.

We cover transportation to and from non-emergency medical appointments for our members. This includes transportation to other Medicaid-covered services not covered by Louisiana Healthcare Connections, such as children’s dental care.

For members who reside in a health care facility (such as a nursing home), transportation to appointments is covered by your facility. Talk with the staff there if you need a ride to an appointment.

When you schedule your trip, the transportation service will first check to make sure you are enrolled with Louisiana Healthcare Connections. If you are not currently enrolled, you won’t be able to schedule a trip.

If you want to schedule a trip for a regular medical appointment, you must call at least 48 hours (two days) before the appointment. Transportation requests for medical appointments not made at least 48 hours in advance may be denied. 

When you schedule your trip, the transportation service will also ask the reason for your trip. Transportation is only provided to approved medical facilities and to COVID-19 vaccination locations. If you ask for a trip to a location that is not approved, the transportation service will deny your trip. They will explain why the trip is not covered. If you have questions about what kinds of trips are covered, please call Member Services at 1-866-595-8133, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

No. Non-emergency medical transportation is included in your Medicaid health plan benefits. The driver should not ask for a co-payment or a payment for the trip. If you are asked to pay, tell the driver that no payment is required from you. Call 1-855-369-3723 to report the incident.

Your friends or family members can get money for gas when they give you a ride to or from your doctor’s appointment. This transportation benefit is called Gas Reimbursement.

Your driver must live at a separate address. Gas reimbursement will not be paid to drivers who live at the same address as the member. Also, members will not be reimbursed for driving themselves to medical appointments.

Your driver must also enroll in the gas reimbursement program. Drivers need to submit their Social Security Number and copies of their driver’s license, vehicle insurance and vehicle united healthcare transportation phone number upon enrollment. Once drivers are enrolled in the program, they can get payments sent directly to their bank account or by paper check. Trip Reimbursements (Gas Vouchers)

You may be provided QuikChek gas vouchers if you use your own vehicle. You must complete a Travel Verification form for each trip. Forms must be turned in to DSS by the 7th of each month. Any trip 30 or more miles from your home must be pre-approved by us.

  • You must complete an assessment of your transportation needs each year.
  • Transportation will only be provided by the least expensive method suitable to your individual needs.

Do Medicare plans cover medical transportation?

Medicare covers emergency and nonemergency medical transport, as long as it is medically necessary and meets specific requirements.

Medicare Part B covers the ground or air ambulance services that a person may need in a medical emergency. In specific circumstances, Medicare may also cover nonemergency medical transportation.

This article will look at how Medicare covers emergency and nonemergency medical transportation costs and under what circumstances the plan will generally approve coverage.

    This may happen when a person needs vital medical services during a trip, such as the monitoring of vital functions. This could also occur, for example, when a person requires dialysis on the way to the hospital.

    A person may also need this when they are unable to:

    • stand without assistance
    • walk
    • sit in a wheelchair or chair

    Skilled nursing facilities and transport

    If a person lives in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare may cover nonemergency trips.

    A doctor must provide a letter to advise that travel is necessary, and, when a person has Medicare Part A, the SNF should pay for transport costs.

    The facility should not charge Medicare for transport services.

    Ambulettes

    Medicare does not cover ambulette services.

    An ambulette is a van that can accommodate a wheelchair and provides nonemergency transport.

    Emergency air transport

    A person may need transportation by helicopter or airplane if they need immediate and rapid transportation that a ground ambulance cannot provide.

    If a person is medically required to travel to the hospital by air, Medicare may pay for these services, provided that ground transport cannot reach the location due to:

    • heavy traffic
    • bad weather impacting the roads
    • a distance that is too long to reach by ground in time to save the person’s life

    Medicare Advantage covers the same benefits as original Medicare, but through private insurance companies. These plans must offer at least the same coverage as original Medicare.

    This means that a person would receive the same emergency and nonemergency transportation under Medicare Advantage as they would under original Medicare.

    However, Medicare Advantage companies may require a person to choose in-network ambulance services to receive full reimbursement.

    Nonemergency medical transportation

    Nonemergency medical transportation helps people who need help getting to and from medical appointments, per CMS.

    It is primarily a benefit of the Medicaid program, but some Medicare Advantage plans also offer this benefit. A person can check with their specific Medicare Advantage plan to see if it offers nonemergency medical transport.

    Supplemental transportation benefits

    In 2019, CMS expanded the abilities of Medicare Advantage companies to provide transportation services.

    CMS changed the wording of some of its policies so Medicare Advantage companies could cover transportation to services that are “primarily health related.”

    This allows companies to include transportation for things including nutrition or wellness, such as transportation to a therapeutic massage appointment or even a trip to the grocery store.

    Ride-sharing companies, such as Lyft, have even partnered with some Medicare Advantage programs to provide transportation.

    Since not all Medicare Advantage plans offer these extended transportation options, and they may differ from plan to plan, a person should call to learn the specific benefits of their plan.

    Under some Medicare Advantage plans, a person may get certain additional medical transportation coverage. This is usually coverage for nonemergency transportation and may vary from plan to plan.

    People who need it may also try to get additional non-Medicare transportation assistance and financial support. A person should check available resources in their area.

    Access to transportation remains a challenge for many older Americans, whether that means getting to an important medical appointment, going grocery shopping or meeting a few friends for coffee.

    It’s a point several home care providers are actively tackling through ride-hailing partnerships, especially as potential hospital and health system referral sources prioritize social determinants of health — often the root cause of seniors’ chronic illnesses. Comfort Keepers, 24 Hour Home Care and Right at Home, for example, are among the many industry pioneers that have carved out relationships with Lyft Inc. (Nasdaq: LYFT) and Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER).

    “For me, there are two big components [to offering transportation], with one being the medical piece and allowing people to access health care and appointments in a much easier way — typically at a lower cost than a taxi or other means of transportation,” Ward, 24 Hour Home Care’s regional director of strategy and partnerships, previously told Home Health Care News. “The second piece is geared toward socialization, helping clients get to religious functions or meet up with friends.”

    A new study backed by a handful of well-known organizations is now highlighting just how impactful ride-hailing partnerships can be for home care providers — and the seniors they serve.

    Published Monday in the Journal of mHealth, the study was led by USC Center for Body Computing researchers, with involvement from AARP Foundation, UnitedHealthcare and Lyft.

    The study’s main goal: to test whether cost-free, on-demand rides truly reduce social isolation and improve medical access for seniors. 

    “Older adults with chronic disease lack access to reliable transportation and turn to time-consuming, costly, or high-burden solutions such as relying on family members or government-subsidized shuttle programs, which are often ineffective and unreliable,” Dr. Leslie Saxon, director of the USC Center for Body Computing and principal investor of the study, told HHCN in an email. “Not only is access to medical centers essential, but it is well known that social isolation and other factors impact overall health.”

    In total, about 150 English-speaking adults 60 and older from the Los Angeles area participated in the study, using Lyft to schedule rides through both its mobile app and a special call-in feature.

    An AARP grant provided three months’ worth of unlimited rides for participants, who also wore wrist-worn activity trackers to monitor daily activity. Researchers additionally asked participants to complete pre- and post-study surveys to help gauge satisfaction, well-being and other characteristics.

    Of the 150 or so older adults who participated in the study, 93% used Lyft, with the vast majority doing so through the mobile app, dispelling popularly held beliefs about seniors’ willingness to adopt certain technologies. 

    “Participants are willing to adopt novel technology solutions if the benefit is there. This is especially resonant given the subjects were novice app users, previously only using their smartphones for email and web browsing,” Lyft VP of Health Care Megan Callahan told HHCN in an email. “This demonstrates that older populations are willing and capable of adopting new technologies — and Lyft in particular. This is a key finding as Medicare Advantage (MA) plans and [senior care providers] expand their use of Lyft for older adults.”

    About 12% of destinations scheduled through Lyft were for medical appointments, with the remainder for errands, entertainment, fitness classes and social visits.

    On average, participants scheduled about 70 rides during the study, with the average ride costing about $20.

    Difficulty with transportation is linked to as many as 30% of seniors missing doctor appointments, a big factor in U.S. health care economics.

    In fact, absenteeism costs the health care industry as much as $150 billion in lost revenue annually, according to previous research from health care technology firm SCI Solutions.

    About 90% of study participants reported heightened quality-of-life thanks to increased access to transportation; about two-thirds reported an increase in social visits.

    “Access to transportation can be a key factor for people keeping up with medical appointments and social engagements, both of which can be beneficial to overall health as we age,” Steve Warner, UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Advantage product lead, told HHCN in an email. “That’s one of the reasons we are proud to support this research and also currently offer no-cost transportation options for health care needs through select Medicare Advantage plans.”

    Providing transportation services to seniors — specifically those who are MA beneficiaries — will be a driving force in Lyft’s health care business in 2020 and beyond, Callahan reaffirmed.

    Lyft currently has MA partnerships with insurers such as Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUNM), Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna.

    “In addition to partnering with [senior care] providers across the country, as well as technology solutions for older adults like GogoGrandparent, we’re also focused on working with Medicare Advantage plans, including select Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, and Humana MA plans through LogistiCare,” she said. “We actually plan to partner with the majority of MA plans by 2020.”

    While the Journal of mHealth study suggests transportation can be a game-changer for seniors’ health and quality of life, others have somewhat dampened expectations.

    A 2018 study from Penn Medicine researchers published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that offering a free Lyft ride to Medicaid patients for an upcoming medical appointment did not reduce the rate of missed appointments.

    Perk #2: Vision Care

    It’s easy to brush aside the need for eye exams if you’re seeing just fine. Trouble is, many sight-threatening eye diseases are asymptomatic or don’t show signs until it’s too late to turn things around, notes the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

    That’s why almost all UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans offer a free annual eye exam benefit1. Your plan may also include an eyewear allowance that you can use to pick up a new pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses. 

    The eye doctor can tell a lot more than whether or not you can read the smallest line of an eye chart. These exams can also catch serious conditions like glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration early, when they can be more effectively treated. Staying on top of your routine eye exam also gives eye doctors a chance to notice small changes in your blood vessels that can be a warning sign of high blood pressure or diabetes.

    It’s easy to overlook your mouth when prioritizing health care. But going to the dentist regularly can do more than help ensure a pretty smile. Good oral health is an essential part of your overall health and well-being, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    Heart disease, diabetes, pneumonia and more are all linked in some way with a healthy mouth, notes the American Dental Association.     Access to transportation remains a challenge for many older Americans, whether that means getting to an important medical appointment, going grocery shopping or meeting a few friends for coffee.

    It’s a point several home care providers are actively tackling through ride-hailing partnerships, especially as potential hospital and health system referral sources prioritize social determinants of health — often the root cause of seniors’ chronic illnesses. Comfort Keepers, 24 Hour Home Care and Right at Home, for example, are among the many industry pioneers that have carved out relationships with Lyft Inc. (Nasdaq: LYFT) and Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER).

    “For me, there are two big components [to offering transportation], with one being the medical piece and allowing people to access health care and appointments in a much easier way — typically at a lower cost than a taxi or other means of transportation,” Ward, 24 Hour Home Care’s regional director of strategy and partnerships, previously told Home Health Care News. “The second piece is geared toward socialization, helping clients get to religious functions or meet up with friends.”

    A new study backed by a handful of well-known organizations is now highlighting just how impactful ride-hailing partnerships can be for home care providers — and the seniors they serve.

    Published Monday in the Journal of mHealth, the study was led by USC Center for Body Computing researchers, with involvement from AARP Foundation, UnitedHealthcare and Lyft.

    The study’s main goal: to test whether cost-free, on-demand rides truly reduce social isolation and improve medical access for seniors. 

    “Older adults with chronic disease lack access to reliable transportation and turn to time-consuming, costly, or high-burden solutions such as relying on family members or government-subsidized shuttle programs, which are often ineffective and unreliable,” Dr. Leslie Saxon, director of the USC Center for Body Computing and principal investor of the study, told HHCN in an email. “Not only is access to medical centers essential, but it is well known that social isolation and other factors impact overall health.”

    In total, about 150 English-speaking adults 60 and older from the Los Angeles area participated in the study, using Lyft to schedule rides through both its mobile app and a special call-in feature.

    An AARP grant provided three months’ worth of unlimited rides for participants, who also wore wrist-worn activity trackers to monitor daily activity. Researchers additionally asked participants to complete pre- and post-study surveys to help gauge satisfaction, well-being and other characteristics.

    Of the 150 or so older adults who participated in the study, 93% used Lyft, with the vast majority doing so through the mobile app, dispelling popularly held beliefs about seniors’ willingness to adopt certain technologies. 

    “Participants are willing to adopt novel technology solutions if the benefit is there. This is especially resonant given the subjects were novice app users, previously only using their smartphones for email and web browsing,” Lyft VP of Health Care Megan Callahan told HHCN in an email. “This demonstrates that older populations are willing and capable of adopting new technologies — and Lyft in particular. This is a key finding as Medicare Advantage (MA) plans and [senior care providers] expand their use of Lyft for older adults.”

    About 12% of destinations scheduled through Lyft were for medical appointments, with the remainder for errands, entertainment, fitness classes and social visits.

    On average, participants scheduled about 70 rides during the study, with the average ride costing about $20.

    Difficulty with transportation is linked to as many as 30% of seniors missing doctor appointments, a big factor in U.S. health care economics.

    In fact, absenteeism costs the health care industry as much as $150 billion in lost revenue annually, according to previous research from health care technology firm SCI Solutions.

    About 90% of study participants reported heightened quality-of-life thanks to increased access to transportation; about two-thirds reported an increase in social visits.

    “Access to transportation can be a key factor for people keeping up with medical appointments and social engagements, both of which can be beneficial to overall health as we age,” Steve Warner, UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Advantage product lead, told HHCN in an email. “That’s one of the reasons we are proud to support this research and also currently offer no-cost transportation options for health care needs through select Medicare Advantage plans.”

    Providing transportation services to seniors — specifically those who are MA beneficiaries — will be a driving force in Lyft’s health care business in 2020 and beyond, Callahan reaffirmed.

    Lyft currently has MA partnerships with insurers such as Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUNM), Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna.

    “In addition to partnering with [senior care] providers across the country, as well as technology solutions for older adults like GogoGrandparent, we’re also focused on working with Medicare Advantage plans, including select Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, and Humana MA plans through LogistiCare,” she said. “We actually plan to partner with the majority of MA plans by 2020.”

    While the Journal of mHealth study suggests transportation can be a game-changer for seniors’ health and quality of life, others have somewhat dampened expectations.

    A 2018 study from Penn Medicine researchers published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that offering a free Lyft ride to Medicaid patients for an upcoming medical appointment did not reduce the rate of missed appointments.

    Do Medicare plans cover medical transportation?

    Medicare covers emergency and nonemergency medical transport, as long as it is medically necessary and meets specific requirements.

    Medicare Part B covers the ground or air ambulance services that a person may need in a medical emergency. In specific circumstances, Medicare may also cover nonemergency medical transportation.

    This article will look at how Medicare covers emergency and nonemergency medical transportation costs and under what circumstances the plan will generally approve coverage.

    We may use a few terms in this piece that can be helpful to understand when selecting the best insurance plan:

    • Deductible: This is an annual amount that a person must spend out of pocket within a certain time period before an insurer starts to fund their treatments.
    • Coinsurance: This is a percentage of a treatment cost that a person will need to self-fund. For Medicare Part B, this comes to 20%.
    • Copayment: This is a fixed dollar amount that an insured person pays when receiving certain treatments. For Medicare, this usually applies to prescription drugs.

    Medicare Part B covers emergency and nonemergency ambulance services when they are medically necessary. In those cases, Medicare covers 80% of eligible transport costs.

    A person may then have to pay the remaining 20% as coinsurance. The coinsurance will usually apply after a person pays the Part B deductible in full.

    According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Medicare typically provides ambulance coverage to and from the following places:

    Emergency transportation

    Per CMS, Medicare Part B will typically cover ambulance services when:

    • There is a sudden medical crisis.
    • There is a severe risk to a person’s health.
    • Moving a person from one location to another may be impossible without the help of the emergency services.
    • A person is losing a lot of blood, unconscious, or in shock.
    • An individual is set to receive a Medicare-covered service.
    • A person is going to and from locations within the Medicare coverage guidelines.
    • The ambulance service meets Medicare requirements.

    Nonemergency transportation

    A person can get nonemergency medical transportation covered by Medicare if they have a written order from a doctor stating that it is medically necessary.

    This may happen when a person needs vital medical services during a trip, such as the monitoring of vital functions. This could also occur, for example, when a person requires dialysis on the way to the hospital.

    A person may also need this when they are unable to:

    • stand without assistance
    • walk
    • sit in a wheelchair or chair

    Skilled nursing facilities and transport

    If a person lives in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare may cover nonemergency trips.

    A doctor must provide a letter to advise that travel is necessary, and, when a person has Medicare Part A, the SNF should pay for transport costs.

    The facility should not charge Medicare for transport services.

    Ambulettes

    Medicare does not cover ambulette services.

    An ambulette is a van that can accommodate a wheelchair and provides nonemergency transport.

    Emergency air transport

    A person may need transportation by helicopter or airplane if they need immediate and rapid transportation that a ground ambulance cannot provide.

    If a person is medically required to travel to the hospital by air, Medicare may pay for these services, provided that ground transport cannot reach the location due to:

    • heavy traffic
    • bad weather impacting the roads
    • a distance that is too long to reach by ground in time to save the person’s life

    Medicare Advantage covers the same benefits as original Medicare, but through private insurance companies. These plans must offer at least the same coverage as original Medicare.

    This means that a person would receive the same emergency and nonemergency transportation under Medicare Advantage as they would under original Medicare.

    However, Medicare Advantage companies may require a person to choose in-network ambulance services to receive full reimbursement.

    Nonemergency medical transportation

    Nonemergency medical transportation helps people who need help getting to and from medical appointments, per CMS.

    It is primarily a benefit of the Medicaid program, but some Medicare Advantage plans also offer this benefit. A person can check with their specific Medicare Advantage plan to see if it offers nonemergency medical transport.

    Supplemental transportation benefits

    In 2019, CMS expanded the abilities of Medicare Advantage companies to provide transportation services.

    CMS changed the wording of some of its policies so Medicare Advantage companies could cover transportation to services that are “primarily health related.”

    This allows companies to include transportation for things including nutrition or wellness, such as transportation to a therapeutic massage appointment or even a trip to the grocery store.

    Ride-sharing companies, such as Lyft, have even partnered with some Medicare Advantage programs to provide transportation.

    In 2021, 47% of Medicare Advantage plans offer some supplemental transportation benefits.

    Since not all Medicare Advantage plans offer these extended transportation options, and they may differ from plan to plan, a person should call to learn the specific benefits of their plan.

    When a person can, they may drive themselves or use public transportation to get a medical appointment.

    In cases when an individual who requires transport has a disability, is an older adult who no longer drives, or is someone with a lower income who doesn’t have Medicare, they may be able to get medical transportation in the following ways:

    • if they have Medicaid, through nonemergency medical transport
    • taxis or ride-sharing companies like Lyft and Uber, and transportation voucher programs may be available to help with the cost
    • Dial-a-ride, which requires advance reservation and sharing the ride with others
    • Paratransit, in which a personal care assistant will help a person with a disability through the public transit system
    • local transportation programs by nonprofit or religious organizations that may assist with the transport, help with the cost, or both

    Medicare Part B may cover emergency transport by road or air ambulance if a healthcare professional deems it medically necessary and under certain conditions.

    Medicare may also consider coverage for nonemergency transport if a person is immobile or requires specific medication.

    In most cases, a person may need a letter from a doctor stating that the ambulance or air transport is medically necessary.

    Under some Medicare Advantage plans, a person may get certain additional medical transportation coverage. This is usually coverage for nonemergency transportation and may vary from plan to plan.

    People who need it may also try to get additional non-Medicare transportation assistance and financial support. A person should check available resources in their area.

    Trip Reimbursements (Gas Vouchers)

    You may be provided QuikChek gas vouchers if you use your own vehicle. You must complete a Travel Verification form for each trip. Forms must be turned in to DSS by the 7th of each month. Any trip 30 or more miles from your home must be pre-approved by us.

    • You must complete an assessment of your transportation needs each year.
    • Transportation will only be provided by the least expensive method suitable to your individual needs.
    • If you “no show” three times for a trip, you may be suspended from services for one month.
    • If you are rude or endanger the safety of a driver or another passenger, you may be suspended from services.
    • If a transportation request is denied, you may make a written request for hearing within 10 business days.

    Medical Transportation Program

    Nonemergency medical transportation services are available for a Medicaid beneficiary or their child. These services include rides to doctor's office, dentist's office, hospital, drug store or any place that provides covered health care services.

    Types of rides include:

    • Public transportation, like the city bus.
    • A taxi or van service.
    • Commercial transit, like a bus or plane, to go to another city for an appointment.

    Services may also include:

    • Money for gas.
    • Meals and lodging for children and youth 20 and younger staying overnight to get covered health care services.
    • Payment for some out-of-state travel to neighboring states (Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico).

    Services do not include making arrangements for emergency or nonemergency transportation by ambulance.

    Can I get a ride?

    To get a ride, you must be enrolled in one of the following programs and not have any other means of transportation

    How do I get a ride?

    First, set up an appointment with your doctor or provider.

    To request a ride, call at least two workdays before your appointment, or five days before the appointment if it is outside your county. Phones are answered Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. local time.

    You may be able to be approved for same day rides when:

    • Your doctor or dentist must see you on the same day.
    • You are released from a hospital, clinic, or other health care facility.
    • You need a ride to a drugstore.

    If you or your child have a Medicaid health plan:

    If you or your child do not have a health plan:

    • Call 877-633-8747 (877-MED- TRIP).

    Children 14 and younger may not travel without a parent or guardian. Children 15 through 17 may travel without a parent, but the parent must provide written permission before the trip is scheduled.

    When requesting a ride, make sure to have the following information:

    • Medicaid ID or Social Security number for the person with the appointment
    • Name of the medical professional you or your child will be seeing
    • Address, and phone number of your appointment location
    • Address and phone number of your pickup location
    • Reason for the visit
    • Date and time of appointment
    • If you or your children have any unique needs including wheelchair, lift, or a walker, so we can send the right type of vehicle
    • Affirmation that other means of transportation are unavailable

    I have a car, but no money for gas. What can I do?

    Call us just like you would to schedule a ride, using the steps outlined above. When you call, tell the representative you have a car but need help with gas money. They will mail you an application form to become an Individual Transportation Participant (ITP).

    Medicaid can also pay someone else to drive you to your appointments, like a relative, friend or neighbor, if they sign up to become an ITP.

    You or your driver must have a current driver’s license, license plates, up-to-date inspection sticker and car insurance.
