US challenger bank Chime launches Credit Builder, a credit card that works more like debit
U.S. challenger bank Chime, now valued at $5.8 billion, is entering the credit card market with today’s launch of a new card designed to help consumers build their credit history by way of everyday transactions. With the Chime Credit Builder Visa Credit Card, users can control how much they want to spend by transferring funds from a “Spending Account” to their Credit Builder Secured Account, and can then charge up to this amount wherever Visa is accepted.
This makes the card feel more like a debit card, as it’s tied to how much cash is in a user’s bank account — rather than a traditional credit card that can allow for overspending.
Chime wanted to develop a new kind of credit card experience due the growing popularity of debit cards in the U.S. In 2018, the U.S. Federal Reserve said debit cards represent 50% of all noncash transactions, the company noted. Younger consumers, in particular, prefer debit over credit, Chime had reported in the past. In a 2015 survey, Chime found that 67% of millennials preferred debit cards, which they feel are more secure and less likely to get them into debt.
However, relying on debit cards alone means younger consumers aren’t building up their credit history — a decision that will come to matter when it’s time to finance a larger purchase, like a house.
“Americans have embraced debit cards for greater control but this limits their ability to establish or build their credit score,” noted Chime CEO Chris Britt, in a launch announcement. “We created Credit Builder to help our members stay in control and safely build their credit with their everyday purchases,” he said.
Chime’s credit card aims to straddle both worlds, debit and credit, by working to establish good credit while also preventing users from overspending.
To make this work, Chime users first add money to their Chime Spending Account and then charge their everyday purchases — like gas, groceries or subscriptions — using the credit card. At the end of the month, Chime’s Safer Credit Builder feature will automatically pay off the credit card balance from the secured account on time. It then reports the credit card payment to the major credit bureaus, including TransUnion, Experian and Equifax.
The card also has the appeal of a debit card for its lack of fees. It doesn’t include an annual fee, interest or a minimum security deposit, like many of the secured credit cards it competes with.

The company has been thinking about how to better address the credit building needs of its users for some time. In fall 2018, Chime acquired the credit score improvement service Pinch, which had focused on helping young adults build better credit. The startup was best known for a service called PinchRent, which reported on-time rent payments to credit bureaus to help its users increase credit scores.
Chime says it took learnings from Pinch and tapped into the team’s expertise in its creation of Credit Builder.
Chime has been beta testing Credit Builder since June 2019 and the service has grown to reach over 200,000 enrollees. During the test period Credit Builder has helped users increase their credit score by an average of 30 points, Chime says, citing data from Transunion. In addition, it helped 95% of members with no credit history establish a credit score for the first time. Anecdotal reports from its users, like these discussions on Reddit, also appear to support Chime’s statements about the card’s ability to improve their credit.
Today, Chime is opening up access to the waitlist for Credit Builder to all its Chime banking customers and it will roll out the service to more members every week over the summer.
Chime’s mobile banking app is now one of many challenger banks in the U.S. aiming to address a younger generation’s shift away from big banks with physical branches to modern, mobile and digital banking experiences. Chime, however, is not a bank itself. Instead, banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank or Stride Bank, N.A. The Credit Builder card is also issued by Stride Bank.
Like many of its rivals, Chime offers free checking accounts, with no overdraft fees, early access to direct deposit paychecks, automatic savings and more. But Chime has outpaced much of its competition, having raised a $500 million round in late 2019 to value its business at $5.8 billion — a sizable increase from the $1.5 billion valuation it had earlier in 2019. It’s now growing at 4x year-over-year, the company says, and reached 8 million FDIC-insured accounts as of February 2020 according to Bloomberg.
Chime’s Credit Builder launch follows yesterday’s debut of the Apple Card “Path” program, which also helps to tackle the issue of young people who can’t quality for credit. In its case, the program alerts users to ways to improve their creditworthiness, like making payments to secured cards or resolving past due balances. This program is more educational in nature, however, whereas Chime’s Credit Builder is about actual credit building through transactions and payments.
Correction, 6/30/20, 3 pm et: The account users spend from via the credit card is called the “Credit Builder Secured Account.” We’ve updated the article with the correct name.

A lot of banks offer a full slate of account options, with various bells and whistles that can make it hard to determine the best fit for your needs. Instead of overloading you with options, Chime keeps it simple with one checking account, one savings account and one secured credit card, all tied up with an attractive mobile app.
This review provides an overview of Chime’s personal banking products. It’s important to note that Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC.
What we’re watching: As reported by ProPublica in July 2021, recently there have been numerous complaints from Chime consumers regarding sudden account closures. In more than 900 complaints filed with the CFPB since April 15, 2020, customers have reported being denied access to funds in Chime accounts. A Chime statement said that these issues were caused by Chime’s heightened anti-fraud efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Here are the facts you should know about Chime and how its services compare to your other banking options. Account details and annual percentage yields (APYs) are accurate as of August 26, 2021.
Chime Spending Account
Chime’s checking account, known as a Spending Account, prides itself on its lack of fees. It charges no monthly account fees and doesn’t require a minimum balance.
Chime offers a program that accelerates your direct deposits, making them available up to two days early. Once you establish direct deposit into your Spending Account, you’re eligible and can choose to receive your payment up to two days early, as soon as your employer deposits it.
If you receive direct deposits of at least $200 each month, you can enroll in Chime’s SpotMe service. This optional service initially allows you to overdraw your account by up to $20 on debit card purchases without a fee. Chime can increase your SpotMe allowance to up to $200 or more at its discretion based on your account history, direct deposit amounts and frequency, spending activity and other factors. You can check your SpotMe limit in the mobile app. SpotMe does not cover non-debit card transactions.
Need to send a paper check? You can generate one from the Chime mobile app and Chime will send it in the mail for you.
Chime Savings Account
Chime’s high-yield Savings Account offers an 0.50% APY. It doesn’t charge monthly fees or require a minimum balance. There is no cap on the amount of interest you can earn and, as long as you have at least a penny in your account, you’ll earn interest. There is no minimum deposit to open an account, but you must have a Chime Spending Account in order to open a Chime Savings Account.
Chime has two optional programs to make saving money easier.
The Save When You Spend feature allows you to save small amounts when you make purchases. Whenever you use your Chime debit card, Chime rounds the transaction up to the nearest dollar and transfers the difference to your Savings Account. Spend $25.50 at the grocery store? You’ll pay the store for that amount from your debit card, and Chime will move 50 cents from your Spending Account to your Savings Account. It may not seem like much, but if you make a lot of debit purchases, you could see your savings accumulate.
Chime also offers a Save When You Get Paid feature that allows you to set up a recurring transfer of 10% of your direct deposit paycheck of $500 or more from your Spending Account to your Savings Account each time you get paid.
Other Accounts and Services
Chime offers the Chime Credit Builder Card* that’s available without a credit check. If you’re working to build your credit history, you can add money from your Chime Spending Account to your Credit Builder account to spend on your Chime Visa credit card. Chime reports your payments to all three major credit bureaus. The Credit Builder secured card is unusual in that it charges a 0% APR.
You can make free mobile payments to family and friends—whether they are Chime members or not—through Chime’s Pay Anyone peer-to-peer system. There’s a monthly limit of $2,000.
Access on the Go
Since Chime is designed to be used primarily through its mobile app, it offers plenty of features to make mobile banking convenient. Chime is known for its mobile app, which is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars at the App Store and 4.6 out of 5 at Google Play.
The Chime app sends daily account balance notifications and transaction alerts when you make a purchase. You can disable transactions from the Chime app, saving yourself a customer service call if you misplace your card. You can also choose to disable international transactions via the app.
Your Chime debit card works anywhere Visa is accepted, and you can add it to your Apple Pay or Google Pay mobile wallet. You also have access to more than 60,000 MoneyPass, Allpoint and Visa Plus Alliance ATMs. You can check the Chime app to help you avoid incurring out-of-network ATM fees.
If you want to deposit a check to your Chime Spending Account, you can do so via mobile deposit on the Chime app.
If you lose your Chime debit card, you can disable transactions from within the Chime app. Replacement debit cards are free and can be requested in the Chime app.
- Simple lineup of free account options
- Very competitive savings APY
- Automated savings tools to help improve your habits
- Early receipt of direct deposit payments
- No branches for in-person service

What is Chime's mission?
Our mission is to make financial peace of mind a reality for everyone. We’re doing that by changing the way people feel about banking. Chime’s business was built on the principle of protecting our members and making managing your money easy. We’ll never profit from your misfortune or mistakes and everything we build is focused on improving our member’s lives.
How does Chime make money?
Chime makes money from the interchange fee charged on card transactions. Every time you use your Chime Visa® Debit Card or Credit Builder Secured Credit Card for purchases and paying bills, Visa processes the transaction and charges an interchange fee to merchants for the service. Chime receives aportion of this fee. This is how Chime can continue building new and better products that help members get the most from their money.
Who can use Chime?
U.S. Citizens 18 years and older are welcome to apply! While Chime cards work all over the world, currently we can only offer accounts to members with a valid SSN, living in the United States and District of Columbia.
Does Chime charge any fees?
We don’t believe in unnecessary fees or profiting from our members’ misfortune. We have no fees to sign up, no overdraft, no monthly or service fees, no minimum balance fees, no transaction fees, and no card replacement fees either. We do charge one fee ($2.50) when you get cash from either an over the counter withdrawal, or an out-of-network ATM that is not part of Chime’s fee-free network of 60,000+ ATMs
Please note that third-party services, such as money transfer services used to deposit funds or out of network ATM used to withdraw funds to your Chime Spending Account may impose their own fees per transaction.
Does Chime have Fee-Free Overdrafts?
Yes! Chime’s SpotMe feature lets you make debit card purchases and cash withdrawals that overdraw your account with no overdraft fees.3 Limits start at $20 and can be increased up to $200. We’ll spot you when you need that little extra cushion to cover an expense. Learn more here!
What type of cards does Chime offer?
When you open a Chime Spending Account you get a Chime Debit Card that can be used at any merchant that accepts Visa. Your Chime Debit Card can also be used with mobile-payment providers such as Apple PayTM, Google PayTM or Samsung PayTM. Other features our members love about our Chime Visa Debit Card are instant transaction notifications anytime your card is swiped, the ability to instantly block your card and order a replacement Debit Card all from within the Chime mobile app.
The Chime Credit Builder Visa® Credit Card is our no fee, no interest, secured credit card that helps you build your credit. Unlike traditional credit cards, Credit Builder helps you build credit with no fees and no interest. There’s also no credit check to apply. The money you move into Credit Builder’s secured account is the amount you can spend on the card. Unlike other secured credit cards, that money can be used to pay off your monthly balances. Since Credit Builder doesn’t have a pre-set limit, spending up to the amount you added won’t contribute to a high-utilization record on your credit history. Learn more about how Credit Builder works.
When do I receive my Chime Visa Debit Card after I open a Chime Spending Account?
After you open a Spending Account, we get started on personalizing your new Chime Visa Debit Card.
