G# (major) guitar chord chart with explanation

The C major chord consists of the three different tones C (1), E (3) and G (5). In the chord shape on your guitar these tones can appear in any order and some of them may also appear more than once. The root is normally played as the lowest tone.

You can get the tones of that major chord by going up from the root C to the major 3rd E by moving up 4 frets (=2 whole-steps). Then you move up a minor 3rd (1 whole-step + 1 half-step = 3 frets) to G. Major 3rd + minor 3rd together result in a perfect 5th. So G is called the 5th of C.

If you take a look at the intervals on the fretboard diagrams, you can see the root as 1, the major 3rd as 3 and the 5th as a 5. Only if the chord differs from that, additions are made to the chord symbol. A major chord is notated with just the root. In contrast a C minor chord is written Cm or C-, because it has a minor 3rd Eb (m3) instead of the major 3rd E. You may also find minor chords written with just the root as lowercase letter in older song books, but I would consider that way of writing as outdated and obsolete.

When you stack 3rds on each note of a scale, you get the so called diatonic chords of that scale. Major chords appear by nature on the 1st, 4th and 5th degree of a major scale by stacking two third over each note. The 1st, 4th and 5th degree of the major scale are called tonic, subdominat and dominant.

That means that in a song in the key of C major you may find the chords C, F and G, a song in the key of F may be accompanied with the chords F, Bb and C and in a song in the key of G major you may hear the chords G, C and D. Many songs (especially in folk, african or reggae music) are solely accompanied by those three major chords.

How to Work out the Key of a Piece of Music

When you need to work out what key some music is in, there are some important rules to follow and some common traps avoid!

how to work out key in musicUse the Harmonic Structure to work out whether it's Major or Minor

Key is fixed by the use of the tonic and dominant chords. The tonic is chord I, and the dominant is chord V.

In C major, chord I is C-E-G. Chord V is made from the 5th note in the C major scale, which is G. Chord V is G-B-D.

Chords I and V in C major

In A minor, chord I is A-C-E and chord V is E-G#-B. (We raise the leading note to G#, as in the harmonic minor scale).

Chords I and V in A minor

important infoThe first full bar of the melody will use notes which belong to chords I and/or V. (You can also look at any upbeats, and at bar 2 as well, but bar 1 is the most important).

important infoThese notes will fall on the beat (not in between beats).

Here is an example.

What key is this in? There is one sharp. Is it G major or E minor?

G-major-or-E-minor

Chords I and V in G major are: G-B-D & D-F#-A

Chords I and V in E minor are: E-G-B & B-D#-F#

The time signature is 2/4, so the main beats are the notes which fall on the 1st and 2nd beats of the bar. These notes are boxed in red.

The notes in the boxes are G, D and G.

The D natural shows us that it is G major. D natural does not occur in chord I or V in E minor.

Here is another example (in case you thought the lack of D# was enough to prove it is G major).

What key is this? There is one flat. Is it F major or D minor?

F-major-or-D-minor

Chords I and V in F major are F-A-C & C-E-G

Chords I and V in D minor are: D-F-A & A-C#-E

The time signature is 3/4, so we look at the notes on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd beats of the bar.

The notes on the beat are D, F, D and F.

D doesn't appear in chord I or V in F major. The key is D minor even though there are no accidentals!

There are many ways to emphasize a note. The tonic and dominant notes are often emphasized in these ways:

Look at this example. Is the key E major or C# minor?

It is C# minor.

how NOT to work out key in music

Don't Rely on Accidentals

This is a very common error. Many people think that because there is an accidental in the harmonic minor scale, that there must also be accidentals in the minor key. This is not true:

important info

Melodies are built using the melodic minor scale. This has both sharpened and unsharpened notes. For example, A minor melodic contains the notes F natural, F sharp, G natural and G sharp.

important info

Only the 6th and 7th notes of the scale are affected. Some melodies don't use these notes.

important info

Accidentals can be added to a piece for decoration, without affecting the key.

Here is an example.

What key is this in? There are no sharps or flats in the key signature. Is it C major or A minor?

C-major-or-A-minor

important info

The notes which fall on the beat (starting from the upbeat) are G-C-E. They belong to chord I in C major.

important info The G# is just to decorate the melody. It does not affect the key of the piece. Listen to the extract for yourself!

How to play vocal guitar solos in the style of John Mayer and Eric Clapton

The 1980s are now long enough ago to generate some legitimate nostalgia. Those of us who were (ahem) there can recall heady summer days to the soundtrack of Journeyman-era Clapton and Toto. There was also a fad for brightly coloured guitars with pointy headstocks and locking whammy bars…

In John Mayer’s recent video for his own '80s-inspired journey, Last Train Home, he appears to have embraced the idea of bright pink electric guitars, but the phrasing is more Clapton inspired, with no divebombs! This installment of Blues Headlines is a look into that style – not an absolute clone of Mayer or Clapton but ‘vocal’ phrasing along those lines.

Beware of the twist in the backing track chord changes, which are laden with subtle traps: a full bar of F# diminished and an A major instead of the more pentatonic-friendly A minor are two of them. It’s still perfectly possible to take a pentatonic/blues approach, but it is a challenge.

The alternative approach of using diminished and major arpeggios (or fragments of these) moves away from the feel I was looking to highlight, so I opted for a more Clapton/BB King approach, adding a note here and there to the major or minor pentatonic, plus a few bends to push minor 3rds sharp over major chords. Remember when improvising that it’s perfectly okay to take your time between phrases; we’re not looking for anything too slick or jazzy.

In the accompanying video, you can see that I’m hesitant before playing some phrases, choosing carefully where to head after each pause. Admittedly, that’s partly because I was consciously going for a style, but it’s also because I’m trying to create melodic phrases like a vocalist rather than falling back on scales or licks. Most of the time, anyway…

Example 1

This opening phrase is very much pentatonic based, but using the pattern as a basis for a more ‘vocal’ approach, rather than trying to create licks or patterns.

I’m departing from the shape to bend up to that F at the start of bar 2 – and the B shortly afterwards is counterintuitive, though Clapton has often referred to a major 7th like this as a passing note. Jumping position briefly down to the A minor pentatonic, there is a shift back up to C via a little reference to the F# diminished chord in bar 4.

Example 2

We’re treading a fine line in the first couple of bars, playing the C minor pentatonic over the A major chord with the only acknowledgement being the quarter-tone bend on the Eb in bar 1.

The timing is also hesitant, which is inspired by the way blues vocals are often sung behind the beat. The second half is more fluent, taking a pentatonic blues lick before sliding between positions to find a melodic line to wind up this half of the solo.

Example 3

As the chord progression repeats, this alternative take on the first half deliberately avoids any overtly scale-type lines, then relenting in bar 3 to a classic blues scale run before a couple of Mayer-style doublestops, followed with a reverse rake across the strings.

I then realise, because the chord underneath is diminished, I can move this up three frets and still be in key, which paves the way nicely for a return to the home chord at the beginning of the final phrase.

Example 4

Coming straight from the doublestops over the diminished chord, I target a major 3rd (C and E) over the return to the home chord.

The C natural is pushed sharp as a token nod to the C# in the A major chord, but then we move on to the D and G major chords, where I play the dangerous game of sliding around a hybrid of the D minor and G major pentatonic, before returning to ‘home turf’ again with a phrase similar to example 1.

Hear it here

Eric Clapton – Journeyman

Having taken a more song-based approach on the previous album, August, with a more subtle guitar presence, this follow-up features a more ‘Eric’ style, with melodic blues phrasing on Pretending, more typical blues-infused solos on tracks such as Bad Love and Old Love – I guess the similar names would have ensured caution reading the setlist on tour, but these are very different tracks! Note how melody and expression take a similar approach to a vocal.

Toto – The Seventh One

Steve Lukather is perfectly capable of playing technical ‘outside’ jazzy lines, but frequently takes a more restrained blues-y approach, or takes a melodic line like a vocal.

This album includes many great guitar moments: Pamela features some classic Lukather blues/rock licks; A Thousand Years transitions from clean to distorted, keeping melody a priority, rather than fitting tricky licks everywhere; and These Chains is also classic Toto!

John Mayer – Sob Rock

At the time of writing, there are only limited tracks available from John Mayer’s latest album as a pre-release, but his playing on Last Train Home and I Guess I Just Feel Like are in a similar vein to what I was going for in this issue’s solo.

It will be interesting to see if he channels that ‘80s Clapton-style vibe in any of the other tracks when the album hits the streets and online – and it’s certainly nice to have some new material to look forward to.

As well as a longtime contributor to Guitarist and Guitar Techniques, Richard is Tony Hadley’s longstanding guitarist, and has worked with everyone from Roger Daltrey to Ronan Keating.

Having taken a more song-based approach on the previous album, August, with a more subtle guitar presence, this follow-up features a more ‘Eric’ style, with melodic blues phrasing on Pretending, more typical blues-infused solos on tracks such as Bad Love and Old Love – I guess the similar names would have ensured caution reading the setlist on tour, but these ferry from edmonds to kingston wa very different tracks!

Examples of use
In major keys, major chords are found on the I, IV and V (1st, 4th and 5th) degrees of the scale.
In G# major, that means G#, C# and D#. These three chords form the basis of a huge number of popular songs.

In a minor key, a major chord is found on the III, V and VI (3rd, 5th and 6th) degrees of the scale.
For example, in C# minor, there are major chords on E, A and G#

Having already looked at ‘open’ chords and their simple shapes, it’s time to move towards some harder to grasp, rarer chords that are known as the ‘black notes’ on a piano.

In this important guide, I’ll be taking you through a huge number of variants of the G#/Ab chord:

If you’re looking for a place to start with G#/Ab chords, then look no further…

G Sharp / A Flat Major Guitar Chord

Every major scale has the same theory behind it, building on a pattern of tones between the notes: 1-1-1/2-1-1-1-1/2. On a piano, the ‘1’ means that if you’re starting on the C, then there will be one note (Eb in this case) between your C and the next note of the scale (D), while the 1/2 means that the next note of the scale is directly next door (such as in the move from E-F in C major). On a guitar, the 1/2 means the next fret is in the scale, and the 1 means there will be a fret in between the two notes.

G# major: G#, A#, B#, C##, D#, E#

Ab major: Ab, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G

You may have noticed that we’re looking at two scales here. Sort of… Technically a G# and an Ab are exactly the same, they just appear in different contexts. Hence why is you take a look at the scales above, each note is the enharmonic equivalent of each other, so if you played a G# major scale out of context, it would be completely impossible to determine whether it was G# or Ab.

For example, in a key with flattened notes, then you’ll (normally) be playing a Ab if you need to use that note, but in a key with sharps, then it’ll (normally) be a G#. Ab is more common than G#, so we’ll approach most of the chords below from the F# perspective.

Each of these notes (degrees of the scale) can be assigned a number as it ascends so you can use a helpful formula to work out chords from it. The G# is a 1, the A# is a 2 etc. while for Ab major, the Ab is a 1, the Bb is a 2 etc.

Once you’re familiar with the scale, you’ll do well to remember that the formula for a G# major chord (and any tonic major chord of any key) is 1-3-5 which gives the notes G#-B#-D# while the formula for an Ab major chord is 1-3-5 which gives the notes Ab-C-Eb.

Within the key of G#/Ab major, you can make various chord sequences and work them out using this numbering system, but remember that G#/Ab major is your tonic, and is where the key will sound resolved and at home.

Songs That Use G#/AbMajor Chords

There isn’t much point in choosing to play a G#/Ab chord specifically (unless it’s to house a singer’s range etc.) as the actual note isn’t really going to change the sound of the chord, just the pitch. However, the way you play your chord is important and will determine which styles each variation should be used in.

  •   Pixies- Where Is My Mind?
  •   Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody
  •   Green Day- Oh City bank credit card no annual fee Ed Sheeran- Perfect
  •   Michael Jackson- Man In The Mirror
  •   Queen- Somebody To Love

Playing G#/AbMajor

Variation 1

As you’ll have seen in various other guides on BeginnerGuitarHQ (such as C#/Db), we can always combine the classic E major open chord shape with a barre on any fret to bring the shape up. As this one is pretty low down the neck, it works well with open chord sequences on an acoustic guitar.

You’ll want to barre the 4th fret using your 2nd finger, then bring your 4th finger over to the 6th fret of string 5, your 5th finger to the 6th fret of the 4th string and then your 3rd finger to the 5th fret of the 3rd string.

Variation 2

Similarly to the above, we can also move our A major shape up a fair few frets with an added barre to create a nice well rounded shape. As this one is so much higher on the neck, it’ll work a lot between when combined with other similarly high barre chords.

Barre the 11th fret using your 2nd finger, then you have two options: either press your entire 4th finger across the 13th fret of strings 2, 3 and 4, or if you haven’t built up the strength for that yet, then use fingers 3, 4 and 5 to press fret 13 of strings 4, 3 and 2 respectively.

Variation 3

This is a nice easy one if you’re unable to make the full barre shape across the whole neck, and it also gives quite an easy option for muting/staccato playing.

Create a tiny barre on fret 4 of strings 1 and 2 using your 2nd finger, then stretch finger 3 over to the 5th fret of string 3 and your 4th finger over to the 6th fret of string 4. Make sure to mute the two lower strings.

Variation 4

This shape is a bit of a strange one that doesn’t come up that often, but it basically just relies on you being able to make a bit of a stretch and creating a simple D major shape.

Press your 2nd finger onto the 6th fret of string 4, your 3rd finger onto the 8th fret of string 3, your 5th finger onto the 9th fret of string 2 and your 4th finger onto the 8th fret of the 1st string.

G Sharp / F Flat Minor Guitar Chord

A minor scale differs slightly from a major scale in that degrees 3, 6 and 7 are all flattened, so they are lowered by one semitone. This creates the G#/Ab natural minor scale (variants such as the harmonic and melodic minor will be looked at in a separate guide).

G# minor: G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E, F#

Ab minor: Ab, Bb, Cb, Db, Eb, Fb, Gb

We could apply numbers to these much like we did with the major scale, so a minor chord would still be 1-3-5, like the major. But this is a bit confusing, so let’s approach it from the context of the major scale.

A G# minor chord is 1-b3-5, so therefore made up of the notes G#-B-D#, while an Ab minor chord is Ab-Cb-Eb.

Both G# and Ab minor keys are quite rare due to the high number of sharps and flats they both respectively have.

Songs That Use G#/Ab Minor

Again, rarely does a song seek to use the G#/Ab note specifically, but rather the minor chord itself. Whether it is as part of the key and therefore makes sense, or to bring out its sadder sound than a major chord, a minor chord is something important throughout all music.

  •      Lapko- River Venom
  •      Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds- In The Heat Of The Moment
  •      Michael Jackson- Earth Song
  •      Idlewild- American English
  •      House Of Lords- Harlequin
  •      The Wombats- Greek Tragedy
  •      Stone Sour-Mercy
  •      Lily Allen- Hard Out Here
  •      Adrenaline Mob- All On The Line
  •      Kansas- All The World
  •      I Prevail- Deadweight

Playing G#/Ab Minor

Variation 1

As with the major variations shown above, the G#m chord is able to replicate the E minor open shape using a barre to bring it up a couple of frets. Again, this one will be easy to use in conjunction with lower, open chords.

Barre the 4th fret all the way across, then use your 4th and 5th fingers to press down on the 6th fret of strings 4 and 5. Make sure your barre is strong enough to bring out the 4th fret of string 3 as that provides the minor 3rd.

Variation 2

Again, chords in the key of g sharp major can move a nice variation of the A minor shape up by a lot of frets in order to get another nice new version of the Ab minor chord. This one will work well when you’re already playing barre chords in a similar position.

Use your 2nd finger to barre the 11th fret, then press your 3rd finger on to the 12th fret of string 2, your 5th finger onto the 13th fret of string 3 and your 4th finger onto the 13th fret of string 4.

Variation 3

This version is a nice easy one that you be may be familiar with thanks to a nice easy version of F major that exists just a few frets down. While not technically an open chord, the easy shape and low position of this variation makes chords in the key of g sharp major an easy one for beginners.

Use your 2nd finger to barre the 4th fret of strings 1, 2 and 3, and then bring your 4th finger over so that it entry level investment banking salary pressing down on the 6th fret of the 4th string.

Variation 4

This variation requires you to be able to mute a string in between those you are fretting, which takes a bit of getting used to. Eventually the ability to mute specific strings will come naturally.

Press your 2nd finger across the 4th fret of string 2 and 3, then bring your 4th finger over to the 6th fret of the 5th string; make sure the 1st, 4th and 6th strings are all dampened so they don’t ring out dissonant notes.

G Sharp / A Flat 7 Guitar Chord

A G#7/Ab7 chord, or G#/Ab dominant 7, is a major chord with an added minor 7th. This creates an interval of a tritone within the chord, adding a laying of dissonance to the sound. In a lot of music, the G#/Ab7 is used as part of a perfect cadence, in order to resolve to the tonic. However, one of the primary uses of the dominant 7th in modern music, is as a part of jazzy chord sequences.

If we use major scale theory (which we would unless you’re delving into the realm of modality where this chord has a strong Mixolydian quality) then the formula for this chord is 1-3-5-b7. The b7 takes the F## of a G# major scale down to a regular F#, or the G of an Ab major scale down to a Gb.

This means that the notes in a G#7 chord areG#-B#-D#-F#, while the Ab7 chord is made up of the notes Ab-Cb-Eb-Gb.

Songs That Use G#/Ab7

Both Ab and G# are relatively uncommon in popular guitar music as they are quite distant from E minor, though the G#7 chord is often found as part of E major. The use of the dominant 7th gives a distinctive dissonance that allows the chord to be use in poignant parts of slower songs, while fit into jazzy, faster numbers.

  •   Gibson Brothers- Cuba
  •   Jamiroquai- Virtual Insanity
  •   The Symposium- Half Life
  •   Will Smith- Wild Wild West
  •   Stevie Wonder- Free
  •   Peggy Lee- Deep Sea
  •   Tame Impala- Patience
  •   Supertramp- Goodbye Stranger
  •   The Voidz- One Of The Ones

Playing G#/Ab7

Variation 1

For a nice, easy moveable option that resides quite far up the neck and allows for versatile, jazzy playing, this common version of Ab7 is probably your best bet.

Simply barre the 11th fret, then use your 4th finger to press down on the 13th fret of the 4th string and your 5th finger to press down on the 13th fret of the 2nd string. Make sure your barre is strong enough to get the 11th fret to be heard on string 3.

Variation 2

This is probably the most common way you’ll see Ab7 approached, as it is a slight develop on a very common barre chord shape that we’ve already looked at. In fact, it just takes the E7 shape and brings it up two frets.

Use your 2nd finger to barre the 4th fret, then bring your 4th finger over to fret 4 of the 7th string, and bring your 3rd finger to the 5th fret of the 3rd string. Make sure you’re pressing down hard enough to bring out the 4th fret of the 4th string as this provides the 7th of the chord.

Variation 3

This option is a slightly weirder, less common shape that is pretty hard to move between and away from, but gives you arguably the perfect spread of notes to voice the chord.

Press your 2nd finger onto the 4th fret of the 1st string, your 3rd finger onto the 5th fret of the 3rd string, your 4th finger onto the 6th fret of the 4th string and your 5th finger onto the 7th fret of the 2nd string.

G Sharp / A Flat Major 7 Guitar Chord

A G#/Abmaj7 chord is simply a major chord with a major 7th attached to the top. This often gives it a very uplifting sound, but there is an underlying dissonance due to the major 7th interval.

If we look at it from the point of view of the major scale algorithm, then the chord outlines a pattern of 1-3-5-7.

This means that the notes in an G#maj7 chord are G#-B#-D#-F##, while an Abmaj7 chord is made up of Ab-C-Eb-G.

Songs That Use G#/Abmaj7

G#maj7 is a good one when used in many contexts due to its ability to slot well into jazz and pop styles. Soul music also finds itself with a lot of maj7 chords chucked in throughout.

  •   Vansire- Eleven Weeks
  •   Gus Dapperton- My Favourite Fish
  •   Ben & Ben- Hummingbird
  •   Tom Misch- So Close
  •   Bruno Mars- Treasure
  •   Ocean Alley- Baby Come Back
  •   Lady Gaga- Vanity
  •   Amy Winehouse- Valerie

Playing G#/Abmaj7

Variation 1

This is my favourite way to play any version of any G# chord, as it creates such a shimmering sound, while being surprisingly easy to play and move towards/from.

Press your 2nd finger onto the 3rd fret of string 1, your 3rd finger onto the 4th fret of string 2, your 4th finger onto the 5th fret of string 3 and your 5th finger onto the 6th fret of the 4th string. Make sure the lowest two strings remain muted.

Variation 2

This variation is also able to bring a nice full sound to the chord thanks to It bringing the Amaj7 open shape all the way up the neck by adding a barre underneath it.

Barre the 11th fret (but mute string 6), then press your 4th finger onto the 13th fret of string 4, your 3rd finger onto the 12th fret of string 3 and your 5th finger onto the 13th fret of string 2.

Variation 3

If you can make the stretch, then this is another chord that stretches across multiple octaves and can give you a wide voicing that brings out each note.

Use your 2nd finger to barre the 8th fret of strings 1, 2 and 3, then bring your 4th finger all the way over to the 10th fret of the 4th string and your 5th finger to the 11th fret of the 5th string.

G Sharp / A Flat Minor 7 Guitar Chord

The G#/Abm7 chord (G# minor 7) is based on a minor chord with a minor 7th above. It’s sort of the sadder version of the major 7th chord, giving off more of a negative sound due to the minor 3rd, but less dissonance due to the minor 7th interval instead of the major 7th.

If we look at it using the major scale formula, then it follows a pattern of 1-b3-5-b7.

This means that the notes in a G#m7 chord are G#-B-D#-F#, while an Abm7 is made up of the notes Ab-Cb-Eb-Gb.

Songs That Use G#/Abm7

Similarly to F#maj7/Gbmaj7, G#m7/Abm7 can fit nicely into a lot of jazz music due its 7th interval, but equally it appears a lot in popular music styles as despite its dissonance, it has a pleasant tone.

  •      James Morrison- Ruins
  •      Womack & Womack- Teardrops
  •      America- All My Life
  •      Lily Allen- Close Your Eyes
  •      Electric Light Orchestra- Mama
  •      Lucy Spraggan- Lighthouse
  •      Kenny Lattimore- Heaven And Earth
  •      Justin Bieber- Pray

Playing F#/Gbm7

Variation 1

Like the major 7th equivalent shown above, we can bring chords in the key of g sharp major open A minor shape up a fair few frets and be left with quite an easy barred version of G#m7 that will appear a lot in many songs.

Barre the 11th fret using your 2nd finger, then bring your 4th finger to the 13th fret of string 4 and your 3rd finger to the 12th fret of string 2. Make sure you’re pressing down hard enough on the 11th fret of string 3 in order to bring the minor 7th interval out fully.

Variation 2

This one is a good option to contribute to your jazzy, staccato playing.

Press your 2nd finger onto the 6th fret of the 4th string, then move your 5th finger all the way down to the 8th fret of the 3rd string, your 3rd finger onto the 7th fret of the 2nd string and your 4th finger onto the 7th fret of the 1st string.

Variation 3

This is probably your easy option, but it does put the minor 7th interval at the bottom of the chord, which is a bit odd… but still this bridge shape is really good for funky playing.

Use your 2nd finger to barre fret 4 of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings.

Other G#/Ab Chords

There are a lot of other types of chords you can use based around your G#/Ab tonic. The ones I’ve shown you so far are bangor maine news channel the most common you’ll come across, particularly major and minor.

  • Abmaj9#11 is bank of america prepaid debit cards for unemployment an Abmaj7 as above, but with the 9th degree added as normally, and a sharpened 11th, which will bring a tritone dissonance to a normally quite pleasant sounding chord. The notes making up this chord are Ab-C-Eb-G-Bb-D
  • G#6 is a dominant 7th chord with the dominant 7th brought down by a full tone. This takes away the tritone and makes the chord using the notes G#-B#-D#-E#
  • Ab7b13 brings a flattened 13th to a dominant 7th chord. This heavy extension lends itself to highly dramatic playing or a jazzy setting: Ab-C-Eb-Gb-Fb

There are obviously a lot more chords than this, but these are a few I really like. I have a few tricks to bear in mind when working out chords yourself.

  •      If you’re in an alternate tuning, remember these explanations won’t be the same!
  • Using a formula to work out what notes are in a chord is a really simple way to help you out.
  •      When building chords that are hard to voice, the 5th is the first degree of the chord you are able to drop. Never drop the root, because that will normally completely change the chord you’re playing. For example, dropping the Ab from a Abmaj7 chord just makes C minor…

Good Luck!

In contrast a C minor chord is written Cm or C- because it has a minor 3rd Eb (m3) instead of the major 3rd E. Chords in the key of g sharp major may also find minor chords written with just the root as lowercase letter in older song books, but I would consider that way of writing as outdated and obsolete.

That means that in a song in the key of C major you may find the chords C, F and G, a song in the key of F may chords in the key of g sharp major accompanied with the chords F, Bb and C and in a song in the key of G major you may hear the chords G, C and D. Many songs (especially in folk, african or reggae music) are solely accompanied by those three major chords.

Chords in the key of g sharp major -

Major and minor chords are the foundation of harmony in Western music. They are the two basic flavors and feelings from which all other chords emerge. In essence, major and minor chords are like opposites; a major chord consists of a major third followed by a minor third, and a minor chord consists of the inverse, a minor third followed by a major third.

In this article you will learn to identify major and minor chords, to understand their relationship to key centers, to use them to enhance your interpretations of your favorite songs, and to put them to work to develop your improvising and grow your repertoire.

Key takeaways

  • Major and minor chords are the two basic chords in music
  • A major chord consists of a major third, followed by a minor third
  • A minor chord consists of a minor third, followed by a major third
  • You can easily build these chords by skipping every other note on the keyboard

A Brief History of Tonality

Tonality is the word used to describe the organization of pitches (notes) in order of importance in relation to a fundamental. The word ‘fundamental’ is not used very often beyond music theorists. However, you may be familiar with the word ‘key note’ or ‘tonic’ which means the same.It may surprise you to know that music has not always been organized in the major-minor tonality. In Western music the tonality before the 17th Century was modal. The musical modes have not completely disappeared, in fact they are used in some of the most well-known songs. The major – minor tonality gets its name from the major and minor scale degrees which it is based on. However, even this familiar system has slowly been dismantled as composers from the 1880s onwards have experimented with increasingly chromatic and atonal writing. For example Debussy who used the whole tone scale.

Back to Major – Minor Tonality

In order to understand major and minor chords and how they are used in melodies it is useful to know a bit about keys. Music is organized into 12 major and 12 minor keys. Each major key has a minor key that it is ‘related’ to. They are related because they consist of the same notes. For example, the key of C major is related to the key of A minor.

The key of C major:

C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C

The key of A minor:

A, B, C, D, E, F, G(#), A – Depending on which version of the minor scale you play, you may have a G sharp or a G natural.

Play these scales and listen to the different sounds and atmospheres created simply by starting on a different note in the sequence. The key of C major has a much different feeling than the key of A minor.

Now we are moving on to creating chords out of scale notes.

Building Chords

Chords can be built on any note of the scale. They are built on piano intervals known as skips which means that in C major scale you can build a chord of C by:

Playing C – skipping D – playing E – skipping F – playing G.

 Building Chords

Go and play these notes on piano, C, E, G. You have now played a C major chord. However, that is not the only chord that you can make in C major scale. By repeating the same process on every note of the scale you can also make:

Time for some more playing, using Heal the World you can learn C major chord (C), D minor chord (Dm), and E minor chord (Em). These are the first three chords of the C major scale. The Skoove app will listen and wait for you so take your time to appreciate the different sounds of the major and minor chords.

Two points of interest

  • A three note chord is called a triad.
  • A C major chord does not have to be played in the C, E, G position. As long as those notes are present, no matter the order or number notes, as long as they are C, E, G then the chord is still C major.

Identifying Major and Minor Chords

There are three ways of identifying major and minor chords.

  • Recognising the tonality from the sound of the chord
  • Recognising the tonality from the intervals used in the chord
  • Recognising the tonality from the chord symbols on the music

Recognising the tonality from the sound of the chord

This is a very intuitive approach. The major chord is often described as brighter and the minor chord as darker. Similarly, a major key feels more optimistic and a minor key more troubled.

I have chosen one of my favourite composers and pieces to share with you. It exemplifies the power of juxtaposing major and minor. In this example you can also practice your recognition of major and minor in piano chord progressions. Schubert often uses the technique of moving from major to minor and back to major to bring a sense of pathos, tension and story telling to his music.

Listen to this Schubert Impromptu Number 2, D935. At 1 minute 30 seconds the ‘middle section’ begins. Can you hear when the tonality changes? Take note of the time in the video, I have written the answer at the end of the article.

Recognising the tonality from the intervals used in the chord

This method is grounded in theory and through simply counting the semi-tones between the notes of a chord you can work out if it is major or minor. Many people use this as a way of checking their ear has identified the tonality correctly.

What you need to know

  • There is only 1 different note in C major and C minor (or any major and minor chord with the same starting note)
  • Major chords start with a major 3rd followed by a minor 3rd
  • Minor chords start with a minor 3rd followed by a major 3rd
  • A major 3rd is 4 semitones
  • A minor 3rd is 3 semitones.

C Major

 c major

Starting from C, move 4 semi-tone steps and you will land on E. This shows you are looking at a major chord because a major 3rd is 4 semitones. (A semi-tone step is the smallest one you can make on the piano, in this case, C#, D, D#, E, are the 4 semi-tone steps you will take to reach E).The last note is G, starting from E, move 3 semi-tone steps and land on G.

C Minor

 c minor

Starting from C, move 3 semi-tone steps and you will land on E flat. This shows you are looking at a minor chord because a minor 3rd is 3 semitones. The last note is G, starting from E flat, move 4 semi-tone steps and land on G.You can use this to work out the tonality of any chord you play providing it is in root position. You know a chord is in root position when it follows the pattern:

play a note – skip a note – play a note – skip a note – play a note.

Recognising the tonality from the chord symbols on the music

This method is based on understanding chord notation as it is written in a lead sheet or in pop music. These are the basics which you can build on over time.

  • The letter name gives you the key note or starting note of the chord
  • A lower case ‘m’ tells you the chord is minor
  • If the chord is major it will simply appear as the starting note of the chord, for example, D is D major.

Let’s play some music with chord symbols. Here is King of Pop Patterns. It uses C, G, F majors and A minor. Use the hand and keyboard image on the Skoove app to make sure you are using the correct fingering. It is important in developing your hand shape.

Difference between major and minor chords

But what is the theoretical difference between major and minor chords? We have touched upon it a little bit.

A major chord is the combination of a major third (4 semi-tone steps) followed by a minor third (3 semi-tone steps).

A minor chord is the combination of a minor third (3 semi-tone steps) followed by a major third (4 semi-tone steps).

It really is not any more complicated than that. You can also see here that major and minor chords are inverse of one another – a very simple way to remember the difference!

Making Chords Work for You

Chords can be used to develop your playing in many different ways.

  • Use chords to develop your technique
  • Use chords to grow your repertoire and learn faster
  • Use chords to improve note reading through pattern recognition
  • Use chords to improvise
  • Use chords to enhance interpretation
  • Use chords to develop your listening skills

Use chords to develop your technique

Having established that Western music is built on the major-minor tonality it is clear to see how the more familiar pianists become with major and minor chords the better they will be able to play. Chords are core stock to pianists.  Practicing piano chords will develop technique as well as chord recognition.

Use this progression from Unchained Melody to develop your technique. Keep your fingertips firm, your fingers rounded and your wrist free as you sink into and float out of these chords. The Skoove app will listen and wait for you.

Use chords to grow your repertoire

If you do not know about 4-chord songs here is a fun introduction:

Learn these 4-chords to play all those songs:

C major (I), G major (V), A minor (vi), F major (IV).

Use chords to improve note reading through pattern recognition

When you see chords in your music, use this top tip for reading them. Train your eyes to read the bottom note first and then use pattern recognition to read the other notes. It is not necessary to read and recognise the name of each note. Rather focus on identifying the interval between the notes and feeling what it is like to play.

Use chords to improvise

Improvising on a chord sequence is a great way to begin exploring the creative and fulfilling skill. This is because the framework of a powerful chord sequence holds your playing. Try it out now with this sequence in the left hand:

  • C major (I) – C, E, G
  • G major (V) – G, B, D
  • A minor (vi) – A, C, E
  • F major (IV) – F, A, C.

The right hand can pick out a melody. If you are new to this, start with long melody notes.

Use chords to enhance interpretation

In music, it is possible for different people to have different interpretations. How you choose to play a piece allows the listener to hear what the music means to you, that is, your interpretation. In the Schubert above the minor section increased tension. Being sensitive to the impact key and chords have on the music you play supports you in developing your interpretation.

Use chords to develop your listening skills

The more you practice listening for and identifying chords the quicker your listening skills and your ear will develop. This is vital for musicians who rely on accurate listening to develop their playing and improvising.

major and minor

Major and minor chord inversion

As we briefly learned previously, we can play major and minor chords in any order as long as the notes remain the same. We call this phenomenon ‘inversions’. Inversions are very handy tools that will help add weight, drama, and color to your chord playing.

Major and minor triads are made up of three notes: the 1st, the 3rd, and the 5th. If you simply play a C major chord C – E – G, you will see. Anytime the 1st, or root, is the lowest sounding note in the chord, the chord is in root position. C – E – G or C – E♭ – G will always equal root position. Memorize that.

If we move the root up one octave and then respell the chord as E – G – C or E♭ – G – C, we call this 1st inversion. A 1st inversion triad has the 3rd tone as the lowest sounding note of the chord. This inversion is often used as a transitory chord from one chord to the next.

Finally, if we move the third up one octave and then respell the chord as G – C – E or G – C – E♭, we call this 2nd inversion. 2nd inversion happens anytime the 5th is the lowest sounding tone of a chord. 2nd inversion chords are a little weightier than 1st inversion chords, but they sometimes do not have the fully resolved sound of a root position chord. Experiment with these different inversions on your piano!

Conclusion

Major and minor chords are the bedrock of musical harmony. If you spend time studying how major and minor chords work, you will become a better pianist and overall musician. There is so much to gain from understanding these chords.

You can expand your ears, your technique, your interpretation of songs, and your ability to improvise. You will be able to access 7th chords to jazz up your sound and your songwriting abilities will start to blossom. Don’t waste a minute! Get to work practicing your major and minor chords today!

Oh, and by the way. Here is your Schubert Listening Practice Answer – The minor section starts at 2 minutes and 2 seconds. The major section briefly returns at 3 minutes and 8 seconds before leading us back to the opening theme.
