“I wanted to show some of the difference between the Swedish way of thinking and the American way of thinking,” Arrback said. “And so what I said was something like: ‘Well, we might have been a bit too protective for your taste, but on the other hand in American movies, men make love to women with their pants on.”

Could it be that Arrback, 25 years after the initial ruling, felt mildly embarrassed about E.T.‘s certification? That E.T. was restricted because of its complicated subtitles wasn’t listed as a factor in 1982 certainly seems to be telling. Arrback’s position on film classification and censorship had also softened by the time she stepped down from the board in 2007.

“During the years,” Arrback told Variety, “I have become more and more convinced that film does not have a negative effect on the audience, and there has been no research that proves the opposite.”

In a fascinating reversal, Spielberg himself appeared to conclude that some of E.T.s imagery was a bit much for kids. When the director put out a new edition of the movie to coincide with its 20th anniversary in 2002, he infamously got ILM to digitally airbrush out the guns held by government agents and cops in one key scene, and replace them with walkie-talkies instead. The alteration was greeted with dismay and scorn by more than a few critics and fans – for evidence, look no further than South Park’s merciless takedown – while years later, even Spielberg expressed his regret.

“I was overly sensitive to some of the criticism E.T. got from parent groups when it was first released in 82,” Spielberg said in 2011, “having to do with Eliot saying ‘penis breath’ or the guns […]It was OK for a while, but I realized what I had done was I had robbed people who loved E.T. of their memories of E.T.”

What Spielberg – and, quite possibly, film boards in Scandinavia – appeared to forget was that it was E.T.‘s rougher edges that made it such a rich story for kids. There’s a fairytale quality to Elliott’s friendship with E.T., but the sweetness is contrasted with the sense of mortality and danger. The sight of a pale, near-dead alien lying on a riverbank may have traumatised a generation of youngsters, but as Dr Bruno Bettleheim points out in his book, The Uses Of Enchantment, scenes of threat and tragedy are a  vital ingredient in all fairytales:

E.T. movie duo reunited for holiday ad

E.T., that beloved movie alien, has returned to Earth - to do a commercial.

Comcast, the owner of the Universal movie studio that distributed the creature's blockbuster 1982 film, has placed him in a new commercial for the company and its broadband, cable and satellite products.

In the ad, which made its debut during the Thursday broadcast of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Comcast's NBC, E.T. returns to see his friend Elliott.

The character is once again played by Henry Thomas, the same actor who portrayed him decades ago.

"The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people's minds and hearts," said Thomas in a Comcast statement.

To be sure, a new generation of consumers does not have the same connection to the Steven Spielberg movie as some people who saw it in the early 1980s.

Hearing the famous phrase "E.T. phone home" may prompt a current audience to ask why the alien won't text.

The ad shows E.T. back on Earth again, in a grown Elliott's front yard.

He hangs out with the man's family, who show him how to surf the web with Comcast's Xfinity and use an Xfinity remote to call up holiday movies on a big-screen TV.

He helps Elliott's kids fly on their bicycles, a nod to one of the most memorable scenes in the original. A graphic urges viewers to "Reconnect for the holidays".

Comcast approached Spielberg with the concept, according to a person familiar with the matter, and secured his permission.

The director appreciated the theme of connection at holiday time, the person said.

The spot will get prominent airing around the globe. Comcast said the ad will run through January 5 in the United States and in versions touting the company's Sky satellite service rather than Xfinity in Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy.

E.T. & Elliot Reunite In Holiday Xfinity Commercial 37 Years After The Blockbuster Movie

Thirty-seven years after E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial grossed millions at the box office and became one of the most beloved movies of all time, the stars have reunited for a sweet Xfinity holiday commercial. In the ad, E.T. has come back to Earth to visit Elliott, played by Henry Thomas , who now has his own family.

Thomas was just 11 years old when he starred in the 1982 film, but now he is all grown up with a wife and two kids. The ad begins with the kids playing out in the snow as the Christmas lights start to flicker.

Inside, Elliott notices the lights and is concerned about what’s going on. And, eventually the kids notice E.T. standing behind a snowman. When Elliott runs outside and sees his childhood friend, he’s thrilled.

“You came back!” exclaims Elliott, who then introduces the extra-terrestrial to his wife, daughter, and son.

During E.T.’s visit, Elliott explains that a lot has changed on Earth since the last time he was there. The kids then proceed to introduce E.T. to the mind-blowing internet, cupcakes topped with Reese’s Pieces, virtual reality games, and holiday movies.

Soon, E.T. tells Elliott that he has his own family, and he needs to return home, and he finds Elliott’s old bike to recreate the iconic scene from the movie. Only this time Elliott’s two kids are flying through the air on their bikes as E.T. rides in a basket.

“The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people’s minds and hearts. It’s really a win-win,” Thomas said in a statement to Us Weekly .

Thomas said that he could see from the storyboards that Steven Spielberg was behind the commercial because the integrity of the original story wasn’t lost in this retelling.

Commercial director Lance Acord says that the whole story is about family, just like the original film. And, it ends with a reminder to viewers to "reconnect for the holidays."

Comcast and Xfinity aired a special showing of E.T. on Thanksgiving Day, and the movie is also available on-demand to their customers.

People loved the short so much that Comcast released a six-minute behind-the-scenes featurette on how they made the reunion.

“It’s Steven Spielberg’s baby,” Thomas said in the making-of featurette. “He’s very particular about this film. So I’ve always viewed any attempt to revamp the character or showing it in a different context as a thing that’s never going to happen.”

This Epic E.T. Reunion Will Bring Tears to Your Eyes

Henry Thomas, E.T.Universal/Kobal/Shutterstock

He's back! Grab your tissues, because E.T. has returned!

It's been 37 years since the release of Steven Spielberg's iconic movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In the film, we saw a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas) befriend E.T. and help him return to his home planet, before he could be caught by the government. Now, almost 40 years later, E.T. has returned, just in time for the holidays, and is reuniting with his best pal, Elliott.

In the new commercial for Xfinity, we see two kids playing in the snow outside of a house when the holiday lights start to flicker. When the kids, a boy and a girl (much like the movie) go to investigate, they find E.T. hiding behind a snowman!

"Elliott?" E.T. says, believing the young boy is his old friend.

That's when adult Elliott appears outside behind the kids. When he sees E.T., he runs over and tells him, "You came back!"

He then introduces E.T. to his loved ones.

"My son," he says. "My family."

Elliott tells E.T. that "a lot" has changed since he was last there. Elliott's son even introduces E.T. to the internet.

We then see E.T. join the family for a meal, some fun in the snow, as well as a holiday movie.

Later, we see that E.T. is hoping to return home to his own family. So, does he make it back?

A Holiday Reunion

XFinity, 2019

Christmas Season approaches. So well, this Thanksgiving, E.T. did more than  a 'phone home', he came home - at least for a little while...

The iconic extraterrestrial from Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit movie E.T. appeared in a new nostalgic Xfinity commercial shown last Thursday. And at over four minutes long, it's a lot like a super-short sequel to the Oscar-winning movie.

A Holiday Reunion

XFinity, 2019

https://www.xfinity.com/ET

The short film brings E.T. back to Earth, where he shows up at the home of his old pal Elliott, played by a now-grown Henry Thomas, 37 years after the two met in the film.

"A lot has changed since you were here," Elliott says, and that's an understatement.

After 37 years, E.T. comes back to visit his friend, Elliott, for the holidays. During his stay, E.T. learns that Elliott now has a family of his own and that technology has completely changed on Earth since his last visit.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Steven Spielberg, 1982

E.T. was the most popular movie of the 1980s. Me and my kids went to the movies. And everyone cried at the end with this touching story between Elliot and the lovely allien E.T. (called E.T., condensing Elliott’s own name).

It humorously and movingly portrayed grade-school kid Elliott (Henry Thomas), feeling lonely during his parents’ separation, as he develops a friendship with an alien from outer space.

A Holiday Reunion

XFinity, 2019

https://www.xfinity.com/ET

E.T. meets Elliott's family and learns about Earth's new technology (XFinity commercial), including a freaky virtual-reality dinosaur game.

Using a device of his own, E.T. shows his Elliot an image of his own far-off family.

And there are plenty of nods to the original film, including E.T. maintaining his love for Reese's Pieces, the flying bike scene, and Elliott's son wearing pajamas that look like those his dad wore in E.T.

The ending, while a bit sad, is a sweet completion of the holidays are for reuniting with family theme that runs through the ad.

"The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people's minds and hearts," (...) "It's really a win-win."

Henry Thomas

Fans seem to think so, too. In 16 hours, the YouTube version of the ad had been watched more than 1.8 million times.

The extra-terrestrial is a squat, brown-skinned, wide-eyed creature with whom white-American suburban-boy Elliott experiences telepathic empathy: psychological projection made real.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Steven Spielberg, 1082

https://www.imdb.com/

E.T. was instantly beloved. Coming after the cornball antics of Star Wars, "it raised the stakes of what popular cinema could express and tapped the universal need to be understood."

Spielberg film made the process of identification that accompanies a child’s personal growth and maturation seem almost magical.

However, there are some critics. No matter the commercial, will be a lovely resource to bring back the real E.T. film to our days children at school.

Education:

Although some criticism, the commercial brought back some of the magical of the real movie E.T. by Steve Spielberg.

Why not to include it into your school curriculum as a motivation to explore the Narrative with E.T. by Steven Spielberg.

It will be a lovely resource to bring back the real E.T. to our days children at school and watch how Steven Spielberg’s iconic movie came back to life for Xfinity’s holiday short story after 37 years.

Teens love technology, right?! It will be interesting to complete the narrative in E.T. with the make-of Family Reunion.

Remember, everything is possible when we want to have the attention of our students into the school curriculum! The important is how you will introduce new staff into your lessons and how to explore it in a pedagogical way.

E.T. has returned to earth after 37 years.

In a heartwarming advertisement that was screened in the United States during Thanksgiving on Thursday (Nov 28), the lovable character, made famous in 1982 movie E.T. The Extra-terrestrial, reunites with another character, Elliott, from that film.

Henry Thomas, who portrays Elliott in the movie, reprises the role in the advertisement to plug the telco services of Comcast.

The commercial, played out as a short film, shows the alien returning to reconnect with Elliott, who says excitedly: "You came back."

"A lot has changed since you were here," he tells E.T., revealing that he is married with two kids now.

The family members bring E.T. up to date with advances such as the Internet and a virtual reality headset that sends the alien falling backwards in surprise when he uses it.

The advertisement also rides on past delights by recycling an iconic scene from the movie, with E.T. and his new pals sharing a bicycle ride across the moon.

The 1982 film, directed by Steven Spielberg, has been ranked the 24th greatest movie of all time by the American Film Institute.

According to trade publication Variety, Spielberg gave the go-ahead for the commercial, won over by its concept of reunions during the festive season.
